I own a garden center in Monroe, MI. I went to Miami, FL in late February and I brought them back in a 26 foot uhaul truck and then the one I still had left just bloomed in August! It is an orange bird of paradise, not a white. I keep it outdoors though from late April to end of October, then during the winter months I bring it back inside my heated barn with solar lights. I can't believe I got it to bloom again! I originally purchased the plant in a 25 gallon nursery pot and then about May I up potted it to a 35 gallon nursery pot, fertilized it and stuck it outside to thrive. I did water it on the daily though. Just thought I would give my two cents and experience :)

@@Mycityplants Thanks for the reply. I have never seen them with white flowers, that seems beautiful. I planted a few in my garden a few years a go and now we have more than 50 taking over. The only issue is we get tons of caterpillars and other bugs that devastate the leaves. I just tried to repot one inside to see if it grows back inside - so far its doing ok. Your techniques and wise plants-woman strategies are really informative and helpful. The humidity probe makes tons of sense.. feeling when the top 2” are dry in a new pot-bound Strelizia (like mine) ain’t gonna happen. (Indeed it’s a pretty tall order in most house plants). I’m getting one! My BOP Regina has 5 glorious flowers right now, and I plan to do everything in my power to maintain them. Thanks for your video. - After 3-4 months when roots are well settled in the new pot, the plant will not be watered through the soil anymore. We will switch to the self watering method and pour water directly to the water reservoir.

This video was great and I'm so glad I found this channel! Was hoping for some advice. I have a similar BOP. It's in a 14" grower pot currently. I believe it is rootbound/the soil to root ratio is off... often when I water, the water runs through very quickly. I have been advised that moving up to a 16" would maybe be the right move as the soil would help the plant thrive more (currently some signs of drooping and leaves curling).
My issue is I'm having a tough time finding a pot that will work. I do like the Lechuza self watering pots quite a bit. Which one do you think would be best for moving up to a 16"? I was looking at the Color 43 or the LS 50... I find while both of these options have a wider diameter that could work, neither is quite as high as the current grower pot the BOP is in (current planter height 14").
Anyway, any advice you have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

You need to loosen up lower roots before potting to make sure the plant is seating deep enough in the new pot. This will not harm the plant :)

Ensure the soil levels are up; rotate the plant frequently.
If you have the plant for over 1 year, fertilize it.
Here is the best plant food that you can use any time of the year (no chemicals, very gentle formula)

Thank you for all this great tips. Mine is inside, no direct sun , but next to a big window, so there is light. Here is winter and I have heaters, wich means NO HUMIDITY. My leaves are turning brown, could IT be overwatering? I do it once a week, around 1 lt , my pot is 75cm tall. Thank you very much

Brown crispy leaves usually are the sign of dehydration.
Brown soft or/and yellow leaves are usually the sign of over watering.
1. Bird of paradise should be watered when the meter reading is in the 4-5 zone.
2. If the soil gets so dry (down to zone 1) in a week, you might not giving your plant enough water per watering, or/and the plant is root bound; or you are not using the meter properly, or it’s sensors are damaged.
Do not keep the meter in the soil. Use it only to test the soil once every 7-10 days.
After watering ( in 10 min or so) you can test the soil again to make sure the water has reached the lower roots. The meter reading should go up to zone 9-10.
Being in the spot without direct sun exposure, average watering frequency should be once every 2 weeks.
Make sure the pot has DRAINAGE and it is the right size for your plant. The pot should be 3” or so larger than the original container.

Strelitzia Are a beautiful plants. They are native to South Africa. I bought one for my home four months ago. I live in Canada, it’s really cold and dark at winter., With dry heat going. I keep mine under a bright light, near a humidifier . Water only when it’s dry. Keep the leaves clean. Mine is growing really well. There’s always new leaves.

You can add brick chips only for preventing the soil to run out of the drainage hole.
Otherwise, no extra drainage layer is needed.
Question: I have a bird of paradise that needs repotting but its the end of August and I am located on Long Island. Would it still be okay to do so this late in the season? my windows face the west and get strong sunlight from 1-5. The plant is looking healthy and strong. Classico 43 is a good fit for your BOP.
The amount of Pon that goes at the bottom before adding the soil is included with the planter as the Pon is the essential element of the sub-irrigation system.

Yes, Bird of Paradise plants can be indoors and outdoors.
Watering frequency will change when you take the plant outdoors, especially when it is very warm/hot.
Test the soil more more often to make sure you do not miss the watering time.
Did you mean - the leaf bended? If so, you can remove this leaf.

How do you trim leaves that are in the middle of the plant for birds paradise? Do you have to also cut all the leaves to the left or right of them until you get to the middle stem that’s dead? I hope that makes sense lol hard to explain with no pic

You don't have to cut healthy leaves around the dead one to remove it.
Grab the stem of the dead leaf and follow it down to where it attaches to the main stem. Then cut it at that point with a sharp knife or scissors.

Well... It depends on how big is your plant now.
10" pot Bird of Paradise plant grows to be pretty big in 2-4 years.
Needs repotting in a larger pot once every 2 years.

Hello! Thank you for the video! I have a VERY root bound bird of paradise plant that had 'babies' just last summer, but I didn't have a chance to separate them at that time... there were originally 2 plants and now there are 6-8 total; the others are already 3-4 feet tall. I have had it in an 18" pot since I purchased it in 2016/17. the roots are completely filling the pot - there is little growing medium - can I separate this without killing them? I know you recommend taking off only 20% of the roots. Please help! Thanks in advance!! PS I can send you photos if you like!!! Thanks!

Do not worry too much about damaging some roots when dividing the plant.

I just got this plant like a small version in an 8 inch nersery pot frok homedepot, it’s in bright sunlight and it’s being watered and misted, but for some reason all the leaves are turning brown at the edges and splitting more then they should,

Splitting is normal for these plants. Even when Bird of Paradise plants are in their native (warm and humid) environment, leaves still split.
Also, AC and heat lower the humidity and this can lead to more splitting. Daily misting helps a bit:) Humidifier is a good option, especially during times when the heat is in use. It’s good for our skin too :)
Brown leaves, tips usually is the sign of watering or root issue.
Take the plant out of the nursery pot and check the roots. If you see any soft, brown roots cut them out.
Re-pot your plant in a pot with drainage. Choose a pot 1-3 inches larger than the original container.
Pot the plant in the potting mix that offers a good porosity.

Allow the soil to dry between waterings.
Rotate your plant frequently.

Nice video. The planters though... I'd rather water more than spend a couple hundred on a planter. It's pretty easy once you learn your plant's needs. And since you have to water from the top for 3 months anyway, that's plenty of time to learn

I prefer spending less time watering and have more time to do other things I love and enjoy + to feel confident to travel for extended periods. Knowing that my plants have enough water supply and will do well during my absence, or when I get too busy with work, gives me peace of mind :)
BTW, even during the first 3 months while watering through the soil, the watering frequency is much less in comparison to any standard pot with drainage. Thanks to Pon that helps to retain moisture.

The reason we do not use just PON for large plants in that the pot becomes too heavy to handle.

Do babies/suckers develop by itself?
If not, is it possible to cut off a leaf including a part of the rhizome to propagate the plant?
My reginae is currently 1.5 years old, healthy and has been growing fast.

Plants that grow in the garden do flower. Plants we grow in NYC in apartments - don't :)
I do not have any experience growing BOP plants in the garden and will not be able to provide valuable advice.
One thing I know, these need a lot of bright light to flower, and if Raspberries are blocking the light you may prune these back or move your BOP to a better spot.

Plants in nursery pots need to be repotted in a pot with drainage.
Terracotta pots or Lechuza self-watering planters are good for Bird Of Paradise plants.
The difference is the watering frequency. Plants in terracotta pots need to be watered more frequently. Lechuza planters have a built-in sub-irrigation system and drastically lower the watering frequency : amzn.to/3R1oXLR

Did you put soil on top of the rocks before adding the plant or just leave the rocks?
I have placed this plant on top of the Pon. If the pot is too deep for your plant and you need to elevate it, you can add the soil on top of the Pon before placing a plant in.🌱

For an orange birds of paradise plant that is outdoors, is a cactus mix good for it? Also mine is in a 11 inch/ 5 gallon container and its bursting i want to separate its 4 stalks into 2 containers one is 14 inches and the other is a 7 gallon pot, any suggestions? Or should i just not separate it?

BOP plants like well drained soil but not a cacti mix.
You may definitely divide your plant. A 14" pot is too big for a single stem.
If you have a 14" pot, you may repot your plant as a whole without dividing it.

I have seen it flower just in the beginning of September, a truly gorgeous site. Got a little too excited and overwatered it, the flower quickly dried out and the leaves were following. I couldn’t understand why the plant was drying out if I kept giving it enough water. Today decided to repot into Ikea’s self watering pot only to discover a horrible smell and severe root rot. I washed the old stinky soil off as much as I could, cut some roots, repotted it into a fresh mix of compost, soil, and perlite, watered (a little on top and more into the tube) with a mix of water and hydrogen peroxide as anti-fungal solution. And now I just hope it was not too late and that the instructions I followed were correct. I keep going outside to check it. The only two leaves I left on the plant seem to have gotten their perkiness back already. Hopefully, it’s only up from here.

Hello, thanks for video. I have a couple questions. I repotted a 6 foot bird of paradise into a Lechuza LS 50 Classico pot 2 weeks ago with 16 quart of "Good Dirt" Indoor Potting Mixture (plus the Pon that came with the Lechuza pot). Though Lechuza instructs putting in 2.4 us liq gallons for this pot, I put in half about 1.2 us liq gallons following your video. After watering with 1.2 us liq gallon, no water came through bottom of liner and the water level indicator did not rise at all. My moisture meter is still indicating 2 weeks later than it is between 6-8 moist level. I called Lechuza and they said even though you're not using the supply water shaft for the first 12 weeks, the water indicator should still rise up when watering on top of soil. Can you tell me if that's true in your experience? Also, should I put in 2.4 us liq gallons directly on soil rather than 1.2 us liq gallons? Thank you

2.4 gallons is the water reservoir capacity. When watering through the soil for the first 3-4 months, you need approx. 1-1.5 gallons of water.

Some water might run down to the reservoir and the water level indicator will rise.
If you have a lot of water in the reservoir after watering, you might have been pouring water too fast or using too much water per watering, or watering your plant too often.

There are 2 options for how it can be done.
HOW TO DIVIDE BOP:
- More aggressive approach - cutting.

With this option, the roots will go into a deeper shock BUT will adjust and recover.
***You will have to keep an eye on the plant and water it more often at the beginning to help the roots to grow.
- Less aggressive approach- separating.
Wait for the soil to dry 3/4 way down.
Take the plant out of the pot.
Untangle and separate roots.
*** IT IS OK to cut some roots to help to take the root system apart.

Here is the POTTING MIX I would recommend using for re-potting: bit.ly/2SumKuf
This potting mix is full of nutrients, and extra plant food is not needed after re-potting - for at least 1 year.

The water level indicator (plastic tube) is a part of the sub-irrigation system. It shows you when the reservoir is full or empty.
In order for the plant to use the reservoir, it needs to be potted into the planter.

I recommend not to refill the reservoir as soon as the red stick is back down to the Min mark and provide some time for the soil to dry.
How dry the soil should be depends on the plant type you have, Plants lie succulents, prefer the soil to be dry all the way through; plants like Bird of paradise, prefer to get watered when the soil is dry half-2/3 way through.

Came here for help....my plant of 10 years ...has completely droop over due to my son giving the plant cold water...shock .also I believe the plant needs to be repotted.. I would take the Bird of Paradise plant out of its pot and check the roots.
Prune any damaged roots and repot the plant.
If most of the roots are healthy, the plant will recover and grow.
You may add support to drooping stems to keep them straight so the water can reach the top of leaves.

Not sure what is going on with your plant but I would advise to keep an eye on watering. Those brown spots can be the fists signs of fungus, root rot.
Allow the top soil to dry. Make sure the plant is not overwatered and the pot has drainage!

I wanted to tell you my secret to getting the plant to bloom. I used hydrogen Peroxide 1 to 10 % to prevent root rot and liquid dirt as my plant food. I keep the leaves clean using peppermint castile soap mixed with Tee Tree castile soap in 2 quarts of water. I get blooms every year.

Strelitzias won’t flower until they’ve reached about half their maximum adult size. So a S. reginae needs to be at least 1 meter in height (measured without the pot height obviously). The species S. nicolai and S. alba can grow up to 10 meter in height in their natural habitat, developing a stem, growing a bit like a tree but without branches. They won’t flower until the’ve reached a height of several meters. They can only grow that large indoors when you put them in huge containers (like 1 meter height and diameter) in places with ceilings of at least 5 meter. An example of an indoors flowering nicolai can be seen in the Hortus botanicus Amsterdam where it lives in a huge greenhouse for palms. Putting them in smaller containers helps to reduce their height for keeping them in normal living rooms but they will never flower.

How do you clean a Cactus so they don't get mealy bugs?

- You need to use long Q-tips amzn.to/40UPuMN to remove all visible bugs and avoid getting pricked.
- Then spray it with Neem Oil amzn.to/3AAQ4ox
Repeat once a week.
- Switch to using just Neem Oil as soon as the infestation is under control.
Spray Lightly once every 10-14 days until the issue is solved and no new signs of pests are present.
*** I would also recommend using Neem Oil for all your plants as a preventative measure during Spring-Summer or when you have a sick plant at home.
Spray lightly once every 2-3 weeks.

For the Bird of Paradise plants it is best to get a pot that is 3-5 inches larger than the original pot (with drainage).
The height of plants is irrelevant - the size of the root system matters.
