- For 70 years, a monument to Soviet Red Army soldiers dominated a central square in the Polish town of Legnica, but recently it was mothballed in a warehouse under a controversial decommunisation law authored by Poland's right-wing government.

During the Black Lives Matter protests in the US, many monuments to heroes shared by both Poland and the US were destroyed. Such someone was General Kościuszko, who commanded the fight for the independence and strength of the United States, and at the same time he was the commander of the Polish uprising against Russia. It's good that we are blurring the traces of communism, but let's remember that it is ignorance that is the greatest threat that can bring terrifying things such as communism back to us.

The statues in Poland were forced onto them by a foreign power in order to opress them.
Statues of America founding fathers or British historical figures are actually figures of there nations or history and founding, and you can't apply modern morality on those of the distant pass.
Now Regarding Confederate statues its another story as most were erected in the 40s by the sisters of the confederacy in order to support the lost cause theory.

@@mistersquare7327 neither stalinists, nor russians, but the soviets, albeit a big majority of the soviets were russians anyway. Btw, you're incorrect, the soviets did kill a lot of poles, but the germans killed more. The rough numbers are as follows:
2,5 million jewish poles killed by the germans + 2,5 million ethnic poles killed by the germans = 5,0 millions in total
1,0 million ethnic poles killed by the soviets (among 1,8 million deported to gulags 1,0 million survived and 0,2 million killed at war)
there're many official estimates made by historians, which differ by a few hundred thousands, the difficulty on the german side was the mere scale of killings, and on the soviet side was the secrecy due to them being on the winning side and cowardly hiding the details as much as they could. No estimates btw say soviets killed more poles than the germans.

Fun fact: USSR and Nazi Germany were briefly allies. They both invaded Poland together. And the only reason the USSR became enemies of Nazis is because Hitler backstabbed Stalin. It was agreed that Poland would be split between the two but Hitler broke his promise to Stalin and took all of Poland for himself. The Soviets really didn't care about the Jews being exterminated or countries being conquered by the Nazis. The USSR only went to war with the Nazis to get even with them.
And considering that the Soviets treated Poles like crap for decades afterwards, it's no surprise Poland is about the most anti Russian country in all of Europe. They remember and especially with the invasion of Ukraine, their hatred as only gotten worse.

As a socialist I believe that any regime that put in place with brute force can be changed. I used to think that Poland after Communism is just a racist shithole but after spending some time in Poland as a doctor I found out that it is just a land where ever major ideology ( Communism Capitalism Fascism) oppressed and traumatized them brutally. Poland just wants to be left alone and they are mostly not racist at all in my opinion. If let them decide themselves I think poland is a land of tolerant, kind hearted people. EU doesn't bring educated and well behaved immigrants, they just want to force people to accept uneducated/radical economic slaves from M.East and Africa whom doesn't respect the culture of that country. I think communism is one or the worst things to ever come about in human history but I'm not ok with taking down statues. Especially or soldiers of war.
Statues of foreign invaders, Everyone seems to forget that the Soviets invaded eastern Poland while the German invaded the west.
They should not be destroyed but they should move them to museums away from public places.

For sure Stalin was a terrible killer, but don't confuse him with the millions of soviet soldiers who have majorly contributed to the defeat of nazis in the world. Soviet soldiers' memorials have to be respected at least where soldiers are actually buried, not soviet propaganda memorials(80% of the German forces where concentrated on the Eastern Front). Moreover, if not Soviet occupation Poland would not get its Western industrialized territories that from medial ages were German(Silesia, West Prussia, Pomerania). The eastern territories soviets have taken back(today's Western Ukraine, and Belorussia) were never fully ethnically Polish with minorities Polish-speaking population.
