I wonder if the issues with reading ps2 discs are related to some misalignment or drift in the calibration of the servo mechanisms that compensate for tracking, wobble errors. This is especially common in old cd players that stop reading discs because compensator gains were set with mechanical pots that get crusty with age. I have no idea if the psx has these gains set instead in volatile or non-volatile memory though (for instance minidisc recorders/players have all these values stored in nv eeprom, calibrated at the factory via a service mode). Or it could be physical changes due to aging of materials has caused changes in mechanical aspects of the disc operation, and the ps2 operation is particularly sensitive to them. Either way it would be a good idea to track down the service manual for this model if possible and scope some eye patterns to see exactly what the psx is seeing when it tries to read a ps2 disc.
you are a brilliant man
i always thought the reader/laser thing that read the discs would always burn up, since the psx had SO MANY heating problems. but, this is valid. preach
Actually one of the easiest repairs you can do for a PSX is actually cut a circular hole in the side of the case where the fan is and put a fan cover on it from a PC or another fan cover the reason for this is then the console gets enough air and the unit doesn't overheat and you don't end up with a dead CD laser or with a read and write error because it's getting too hot
Thank you everyone for watching my videos, it means alot!
OH MY GAWD PAUL, i've been wanting one of these for ages!!!
HAHAHAH. What's good my dude.
@@RETROGAMINGARTS Just wonderin' were you got this sweet PSX from bro.
@@Derik64 was sent to me to repair
Anytime. Random question what would it take to make a playstation homebrew game that is written on a real disc? Or do you have no idea. Cause I was thinking if someone did that... that allows longevity or a homebrew game, like on ps1, ps2 and ps3. Plus 700 megs for a indie game is a lot of memory to work with
Fascinating. I've never even heard of this machine before. You truly provide a public service, man. Thanks for sharing the cool discovery and good luck resurrecting it to its former glory. PS2's were truly one of the best gaming systems ever. Keep learning and sharing.
PS2 FOR LIFE. YES! Defiantly my favorite system ever, this unit is pretty cool, i got some more cool units to show, i have a rather interesting ps2 collection lol
Pretty awesome unit. One thing I have heard is they break down easily and the hard drive is encrypted and cant be replaced. Maybe you can clone it and try another spare for fun.
You can't clone the drive it won't work it's to bad the stupid encryption on the drive is ridiculous and when the drive dies your screwed very poor design by Sony
@@MichaelThompson77 this was excellent
@@MichaelThompson77 you're correct, this drive cannot be cloned, many have tried with no success
the system is REALLY cool, but yea, there is alot of failures on them, so its sad, however, alot of them all seem to play ps1 games very well, everyone i know who has one, they all play ps1 games just fine
@@RETROGAMINGARTS Ahh yeah sony did the same thing on the ps3. It's not that cloning the drive doesn't work per se, but the system checks the hard drive serial against the firmware stored on the drive at boot so without decrypting the firmware and changing some values to match the new drive's serial the psx refuses to boot.
good to see you still making videos paul. keep up the great work!
thank you for not forgetting about me since i stopped the stream, touches my heart, not trying to sound lame i'm dead serious, thank you so much, i'm slowly back at it, i wont ever stop, i'm so all over the place lol
Mate, I have been wanting to see a disassembly video of one of these in ages! Subscribed
Yes! I'm glad I could deliver for you. And in sure if you wanted to see a disassembly of this... you'll love the rest of my channel too! Nice to meet you man
About DVRs in Japan: yes, Blu-ray recorders exist in Japan. But it's only because the broadcast standard in Japan is copy protected.
I just want the hard drive encryption to be cracked.
One day someone will figure it out
RETRO GAMING ARTS so if the encryption is cracked then the main issue is taken care of?
Very interesting, thanks for posting
thank you for watching, this one was cool to make
Keep up the interesting videos dude.
thanks for finding my stuff interesting buster
@@RETROGAMINGARTS no problem dude.
Funky heatsink
lmao right?? glad you noticed that
Would have loved to see how you got it working.
i love excotic hardware :D
Hey I know I'm like three years late to the party, but I just had one of these that wasn't reading any discs. I adjusted the seeker laser potentiometer about a quarter turn clockwise and was able to get discs reading correctly.
Niiice!
i hope someone out there is working on opening the software of this machine more specifically the hard drive since it's encrypted. nice!
Great video
thanks yo, i enjoyed this one
Since you seem to know what you're doing, I had one of these things reading discs just fine, but when I reassembled it, I pinched a damn ribbon cable and I think it blew a fuse.
The unit won't power on now, when I plug it in, I can hear a faint beep, but it will not turn on. I've been told there are a bunch of fuses on the main PS2 board that can be easily swapped with a PS2 slim's fuse set. But I honestly don't know enough about that thing, nor am I am expert at soldering.
But I'm hoping you could give some pointers, because it worked just fine until I pinched that damn ribbon cable, I'm going to start with a continuity test on the fuses and the capacitors and mark them if they don't pass.
To say I'm kinda bummed, would be a gross understatement.
do you have a multi meter? using a multi meter to find where the issue is would be helpful, its how you can test if the fuses are blown, just check continuity on each fuse, if theres no continuity, theey're blown.
however, i think a new ribbon cable would most likly fix the situation
You can make PS2 games work by installing Free McBoot (it's own version for PSX) on a memory card. If you turn on your PSX with the FreeMcBoot memory card inserted and insert your PS2 game while MCboot logo is shown (just before PSX software is loaded), it skips that "seeking" lens and automatically launches your PS2 game.
Mad respect for the OG NieR soundtrack
Mad respect for noticing 😉
Any info or links for the lens that you bought..? Is the Fat PS2 Lens really a direct fit....?
Ive got a sliver one but it wont accept discs i can put then like 80% in before it kicks it out and just makes a horrible sound every 4 to 5 sec any ideas
If you think you can repair the PSX System, I have one that has issues, also with the PS2 portion (non-blueback discs) and I wanted someone to work on this for 2 years now. The PS1 part of mine is totally fine but when you said it is possible to mod this my ears immediately perk up. If you want the challenge, I can definitely consider sending this to you and pay for parts, labor, etc. - Jimmy

Once your hard drive failed, it becomes junk.
and if i remember correctly this thing has overheat issues too.
i agree
i have one on my bench i will have to dump an image of that hard disc on my file server
INSTALL FMCB ON IT. DO A HDD BACKUP. The system won't boot unless it has a properly formatted, good health HDD with the system installed on it. PLEASE DO A BACKUP.
Wait how so? Ok I will, but in a sentence can you explain what i use to backup the hdd?
@@RETROGAMINGARTS Sadly I'm not familiar with the PSX but I know FMCB has an option to run on that hardware. Then you can dump the HDD with uLoader to an USB drive or network storage.
The PSX HDD is encrypted, but maybe uLoader can bypass? i don't have a PSX Yet. but hopefully someday. and also i know with FMCB you can bypass the software laser switching to play PS2 DVD games.
If I buy a PSX that just powers on can I still soft mod it with FMCB?
Dreams...... Dreams are inside.....
DREAMS OF HAVING A SUPER COOL PS2..... ONE DAY... ONE DAY!
So this is what a PSX is interesting
sup foxhound! glad you where able to see something cool on my channel
One question ... would the PSX work with a MODBO chip?
(Sorry, my english is bad)
You can use freemcboot
Michael thompson is correct, you can use freemcboot, but you can also mod these systems with the modchips aswell
I always wanted one of these but they are very expensive
The modchip part was never proven before.
Would be awesome if you could try - you'd be the first person to do so afaik.
@@breaKdownINC really?? ugh oh! now i must try
It’s not Japanese ps2
It a Chinese ps2
