    Even though this song was written before Josh was in the band, it's interesting how Josh has been represented as an alien in the band. He used to wear an alien mask while Tyler wore the skeleton, of their little symbols he's the alien, Tyler is a skeleton. He's been seen wearing an X-files I want to believe shirt, and has a UFO tattoo.

    For me, this song is about life, as in normal society wants a to go to school, get a job and a house and 2.5 kids....but artists brains work differently....and he follows the aliens, the outcasts, or God telling him that he has a different path and it’s okay to make music.

    Great reaction! For me I see this song as a more metaphorical version of stressed out. The emotionless march makes me think of people going through the motions of life, spending so much time on career they aren’t passionate about...then the spaceship comes by. A spaceship symbolized dreams in stressed out so Tyler’s dream and passion called out to him and he followed that instead. He then continues his march (towards the end of life) but he’s not in the emotionless line anymore, he’s on his own path

    to me this is one of the most interesting songs he's ever written - and that's hard to say since there are so many
    the song i think is clearly about not conforming to what everyone else does or what you are always taught is right, but rather think for yourself and create your own path
    i think there are two ways to take the song that make sense
    1) the spaceship in the sky represents God and he follows that path of faith - i think this makes sense as the more literal interpretation
    2) the spaceship in the sky represents his creativity and he decides he's not just going to get the cookie cutter 9-5 job and do what society expects you to do, but rather he wants to use his creativity and pursue music - i think this makes sense from the point of view of getting out of line and blazing your own path
    A couple others i like from this album that you haven't done are "Oh, Ms. Believer" and "Trapdoor"

    So from my search, I came across an article that I will not take credit for. I think it describes the song perfectly:
    “From my perspective - also knowing that Tyler Joseph is a Christian - this song is about life. Life, mainly focusing on all it's downs and the search for a meaning in a seemingly meaningless existence.
    Marching to the sea has become the norm, the way of life; everyone is part of the line, because we can't see another way to live our lives apart from doing what everyone else is doing, which in the end leads to 'the sea', or spiritual death.
    "No one looks up anymore" is saying that we've turned away from any sense of a higher meaning to life and try to live the way everyone else is, which is just an emotionless march until eventual death.
    The small spaceship which calls to "Follow Me instead" is God, the One Who offers Hope, the being Who the marchers all ignore because they feel that "this line's the only way." While it's much easier to follow this marching line toward our seemingly inevitable fate, any human who's experienced all the 'line' - or life - has to offer for them realises that it's not the answer, that it's all worthless; "I ask myself the question why".
    This Spaceship in the corner of our eye is the escape from the line. And even while "I don't want to march here anymore", we're all still human and will never fully be free of the line in this life "then you put me back in my place, so I might start another day".
    The walk is made easier knowing that we now have a purpose, but in the end we're still 'In a march to the sea.’”

    @testimusicali6445 Před 3 lety

    Of all TOP songs this one puzzles me because there are soooo many plausible ways to interpret it (as seen in comments). I am so NONconfident about my theory because everyone's interpretation is so plausible. At first i thought it was about religion cause he said noone looks up (God), which is where he gets the voice (spaceship). BUT then at end God (?) puts him back in the line so i thought 'nah I'm confused> his God wouldn't intentionally return him to the mindless line'. So now what i keep thinking is that it is a line of blind conformity with us walking thru life to our eventual death (sea) not thinking/acting differently from how society/'powers that be' has trained us to think/act (noone in line looks to the left or right, just straight ahead.) We're mindless automatons. So Tyler does look left/right sees spaceship and has the calling to be different. What i find really interesting is that he answers the calling (goes to spaceship) BUT AT THE END the spaceship puts him BACK in the line where he was and he continues his march to sea. He's back in the SAME friggin line. He tried to change but ended up back where he started, as how some people do. So that's how i keep thinking about it but am unsure. So i love to hear all the different interpretations to this one cause it's sooo multi-possibilities. His writing expression is always so unique and clever but this particular album is so genius.

    I’ve always wondered if this was more about a struggle with organised faith? I know he went through a time where he questioned his beliefs but there’s a few songs, this is one, that I feel his struggle may have been with what the organised religion streams were telling him this is what you must do to be a ‘true Christian’. From what I’ve seen his church is a much more accepting one that is not quite so doctrine (not sure if that’s the right term???). Anyway I feel that in the end he chooses to just follow God in his own way than stay in that line that’s expected from any of those specific religious organisations 🤷🏼‍♀️.
