- In 1987, sports fans around the world awoke to extraordinary news. Boxing superstar Sugar Ray Leonard had come out of retirement to face off against the unstoppable Southpaw champion, Marvelous Marvin Hagler. For nearly a decade, this had been the one fight that many fans had hoped for the most. But as the years ticked by it became more and more apparent that it was the one fight they would probably never see.

Hagler was a southpaw switch hitter with knockout power in both hands. The foundation of his style was an incredibly unique jab, thrown off of a shuffle. Gazelle hooks are rare enough, but Hagler’s gazelle jab was even more powerful as he could use it to move competitor into his left hand. This is where Hagler’s fluid ability to switch stances came in. After compelling opponent’s to move inside with his right, Hagler would cut off the ring and rapidly close distance by turn-shifting into orthodox.
Leonard’s style was inspired by Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Robinson. His footwork was incredible, he could rebound back and forth in a wide stance, cross step around the ring to set up jabs like Ali, and seamlessly transition between the two whenever he liked.
His hand speed was unmatched, opponent’s were hit by Leonard’s second punch before they realized the first punch had landed. While he was a boxer at heart, he could turn into a puncher if he needed to, as he had against Thomas Hearns. - Sport
My opinion on the fight is below (SPOILERS!)
First off, this was a close fight, but in a very weird, complicated way. I would say most close fights have one person winning most of the first half, and then the other fight comes back and wins most of the second half. Loma vs Lopez is a decent example of this. Another way it could be close is if the fighters go back and forth, gaining and losing momentum every few rounds. This usually makes great fights, like Ali vs Frazier 3 or Israel vs Gastelum. This fight is different, in that most of the rounds are close. Meaning that the majority of rounds could have honest judges give it to either man. Each fighter did have two rounds in which I would consider the judges blind if they scored for the other man.
That being said, I feel the majority of rounds that could go to either man strongly lean towards Hagler. There are rounds like the 10th that are really even, but most I would give to Hagler. And I say that as a huge Sugar Ray fan, rate him top five ever. Here are my reason's for this conclusion:
PUNCH COUNT: In preparing for this breakdown I went through the fight in slow motion twice, counting the punches that connected for each man. Compubox is two people clicking buttons in real time, so it's not very reliable. I found that they had missed a lot of punches, and they were mostly Hagler's body blows. I had Hagler usually out landing Leonard by a few punches. In that case it becomes quality of the punches, and I felt Hagler usually hit harder and cleaner. And the rounds that Hagler dominated, he really piled up the count. I counted 304 for Hagler, and 260 for Leonard.
DEFENSE: Leonard was much better defensively most the time. Hagler would occasionally walk through punches to get close then miss anyways. Not a good luck.
RING CONTROL: I would have given this to Leonard easily, if he hadn't taken such punishment in the clinch. In my mind, if you need to take damage to escape the corner than you are not fully in control of the ring. Other wise, Leonard's footwork and grappling would have given him this easily. I have it about equal.
AGGRESSION: I would give this to Leonard. Just kidding, obviously Hagler has this one.
THE INFAMOUS FLURRIES: These fooled me for years, even knowing that most the punches didn't land. I still had NO IDEA how many really weren't landing before I watched in slow motion. However, I will disagree with those saying that Leonard was throwing pitter patter punches. He managed to back Hagler up, so they must have hit pretty hard. Honestly anything going that fast will hurt really bad.
THANK YOU! It's incredibly I get to make these. Leave your opinions as a comment if you'd like to debate, gonna try and get back here in a day and answer a bunch of comments.
Fixed it thanks!

The first time I watched the fight, I thought Leonard had won. With each subsequent watching, I become more convinced that Hagler won. He was busier and landed the more damaging shots. It's hard to appreciate a guy like Marvin, in his time. He was like a machine and that's not easy for fans to connect with. My admiration for him has only grown with the passage of time. He deserved better, but kudos to him for leaving on his own terms. Respect to Sugar, he showed that his guts were Hall of Fame as well.

Just like Ali, Leonard was a master of all the little mind games, not only the ones against opponents, but also with the judges and audience. He lost the fight but won the decision and the storytelling.
Agree, Judges were impressed with how many punches Leonard did againts Hagler gloves, then they gave the fight to Leonard. Shame on them! At least a spare would have been honorable.

Right.....
@melvinsims5379 It's not undisputed, it's highly disputed even to this day.
For 35 years, I thought Marvelous Marvin was robbed - and this excellent and insightful breakdown hasn't changed that opinion. But what it has done is show me Leonard's level of genius, even if I still feel the 'genius' had more to do with psychology than 'boxing' (although his boxing skills can't be denied). When I saw the fight all those years ago, his showboating infuriated me almost as much as it did Hagler - and it still does - but I have to respect that he understood how to use the crowd and influence the judges. Thank you for these great 'Fight Explained' videos.
he was still robbed though.
Hagler won the fight.. Never got the decision.. but won the fight. End of..
Agreed. But also Leonard was just popular and he knew how to use it. It is funny but he started to lose that popularity with Hearns II when people really started to see through his antics and began to resent it. His crowd-swaying tactics were pretty crude and easy to spot.

The fact that the crowd was chanting Leonard name tells you of his greatest gift and that was winning peoples hearts.
To me, Leonard really played it smart by treating Hagler with the utmost respect in the press and any interactions before the fight. I believe he did absolutely everything to not give Hagler a reason to hate him going in (I was surprised to hear the commentary that Hagler had in fact hated him for a long time). At any rate, Leonard's show of respect toward Hagler seemed to cause Hagler to start off slower than he normally would. Well, maybe it was only part of the reason, but Hagler didn't seem to come out blazing like usual.
I think had he come out stronger like with other opponents, the outcome would have been different.
At the end, it was clear that Hagler could have gone several more rounds whereas they were holding Leonard up after the 12th round - Leonard was absolutely spent.
I am a big fan of Leonard, so I like seeing him win, but man it was close.
Btw, it was the first time I heard that it was Hagler that turned down a rematch - I would have expected it would have been Leonard. Maybe Leonard ended up doing more psychological damage?
Are you a boxing writer?, if not ? then you should be.
That's the problem isn't it? Leonard gave it all and was spent at the end. Hagler had more energy left at the end. So whatdaya gonna do with that energy?
Go for a run after the fight?
As you said, things may been different if Hagler put it all out there from beginning to end. But his strategy worked against him, and he underestimated this great, but smaller welterweight turned middleweight.
@@ajaj3459 bingo. Sugar was smaller, AND hadn’t fought in 5 years. Literally no fighting at all. The loss in on Marvin. My coach in high school said, “if you play a team that sucks, show them that they suck from the first whistle!!”.

Once again I remember saying how this fight epitomized the concept of "quiet offense." Yeah, but that still counts and even the blocked punches are better than nothing. If you land multiple flurries like that, you're going to rack up points, and there's no guarantee the other guy is keeping up with those 2 landed punches at a time either.
@@biscobisco1882 that's a false statement from every possible way of looking at it. Defense is one of the criteria of scoring a boxing match, on equal footing with "effective" aggression. Meaning that throwing 100 punches a round and connecting with 5 should lose to the guy throwing 20 and landing 5 due to the aggression not being effective and the defense controlling the action. A great example of this is Willie Pep who won a round on all 3 cards without throwing a punch in the round.
@@trevorboyer2731 Your thoughts on effective aggression are idiotic. It's not EFFICIENT aggression you dope, effective aggression is judged by who attacks more, and puts the other guy von the defensive, regardless of cleanliness of punching. If it had anything to do with scoring legal blows, effective aggression would simply be determined by who lands more punches, and there would be no need for a separate criterion for it.
Your Willie Pep example sucks too, because it was in 1946 and no fucking footage of it exists, and newspapers at the time described the round in question as a slugfest. At least check his Wiki before you go repeating stupid memes.
Obviously, you were watching the fighter you wanted to win. Leonard clearly won this fight. Learn how to score a fight, then view it again.
And "blocked punches" can still cause damage, that's why judges give it some weight. Plenty of fighters have been knocked out despite "blocking" the punch. That was George Foreman's specialty!
Amazing breakdown of one of my favorite fights ever! I have always been a Leonard fan and watched the fight believing he won. This breakdown has changed my opinion. Great job! Rip Marvelous Marvin Hagler! I actually shed a tear when I found out about his death.
Leonard won.
Hot damned this commentary is really awesome! Appreciate the work! Really great stuff!!
Man, I just ate lunch while watching the actual fight with Leonard and Hagler, and this video comes out. Perfect timing
With that timing, have you got any investment tips?
They robbed Hagler
Man, it was my birthday and it came out 😀
@@FBA_God_Emperor_Doom after the fight?
Bro, I hope you see this, the way you re-tell these stories with your analysis of the technical aspect and added emotional and mental insight is like the telling of an epic mythological story. I love viewing sports through that lens, you're making good stuff!
Nice vid
I lived thru it. Great to see it broke down for future fans.
New sub
Man ur the best for this. U break the science down like no other. I watch every upload. I was a kid when this fight happened but I remember it. What a time to be alive. The 80s was so mystical so innocent and fun. Great Fight. And great analysis my guy💯💯💯🥊
I've only seen the fight one time all the way through. Personally, I had Leonard over Hagler by only a round. That being said, I fault no one who thinks Hagler won. Even through watching this video I found myself questioning if I too was persuaded by Leonard's showboating and strong finishes to each round. One day I'll go back and perhaps change my mind. But man, what a fight.
This. It's a fight you can watch 100 times and 50 times you're convinced Hagler won... the other 50 convinced Leonard won.
@@KVSWF truly a beautiful aspect of boxing
This fight was no different than ggg vs Canelo 1
@Anthony Joshua How odd. When I read the wiki on this fight on boxrec.com, members of the press and other boxing professionals score Hagler: 26-22 with seven others seeing it as a draw.
Many experts feel that Hagler won, or at least it was a draw.
Great analysis and breakdown of such an iconic fight. You not only thoroughly explained the fight in detail but also added the psychological and mental side of it too, which gives you a clearer picture.
One of he most amazing fights I've ever seen. They swapped styles midway through the fight. Unreal.
Boxing at its best. And an expert narration to help us interpret this complex battle.
It's so extremely rare to see a fighter win after moving backwards for the duration of a match.
Marvin Hagler was a no-nonsense, straight shooter that is rarely seen these days. And he had his faults as all men do. But his spirit as a man exceeded his spirit as a boxer.
RIP Marvelous. God’s Speed.
IF you watched the whole fight you know Hagler won.
💯 exactly 💯👏🙌👌
@@jeffreymelendez8497 👍 agreed. Wish he just stuck at his jab more. Still think he won though!
Great analysis. It articulates a hugely complex fight to score and makes transparent what hagler felt after the fight imo.
This is one of the 1st fights I remember watching as a kid and I was hooked.
one hell of a fight
As a Hagler fan I remember how upset I was when Leonard was pronounced the winner. I know Hagler won and is the greatest middleweight fighter of all times.
Leonard won.
@@yankee2666 As a Leonard fan who was screaming with joy at the time...I know he lost

Jose- But could he beat Canelo?
@@LAStreetPreacher He most certainly would.
I was actually crying during the end of this fight. I was a huge sugar ray fan, and a very young kid for the record. And i knew Hagler won the fight. I couldnt believe when they announced Leonard the winner. From that moment i knew you couldnt leave anything up to the judges. Ironically years later my cousin thru marriage Terrible Terry Norris would be the one to retire Leonard for good. Great breakdown. Have you done the Hagler Hearns fight. Im gonna check your channel. Thanks for the nostalgia
You don't win by just being the agresser, he was out smarted, you are not a true sugar ray fan
@@rockbigfoot5531 I was like 8 years old homie. I even said that in my original comment
Yeah I don't know about that man. I think Leonard won

Yall win bro. All of you. Im a terrible boxing fan and i dont know shit. I was just commenting on something that happened a long time ago the way i remembered it. I enjoyed the video but you keyboard warriors have defeated me so i will go hide in shame
For the life of me I can't fathom how anyone, including Hagler himself could think Hagler won that fight. Leonard dictated every step of the fight. They fought when Ray wanted to fight, ... rested when Ray wanted to rest. Leonard made the invincible giant look oh so mortal. And Leonard was the guy moving UP in weight class!
Wow love your videos man keepem commin
One hell of a fight props to both legendary warriors 👏
RIP Marvin. And more thanks than I can express for those great fights.
I thought I knew everything about boxing and these legendary matches but you continue to show me I dont know s##t lol. Keep up the great work you are the best at this. I've seen recap vids and the history around certain fights but these breakdowns are on another level. These are like mini movies and I love them. Could you do a video on the legendary feud between lamotta and Robinson?? I know there is limited footage but the final fight is all there so If you ever get the chance to do it I I would love to see it.
I've watched the whole fight. Without this video, I still would be thinking Leonard won to this day. I always felt uneasy with how Leonard performed in the 12th round. He looked like he was winning the previous rounds, but he looked like he was losing the 12th round. I didn't get it. Finally I got it. He was actually running for his dear life. But he wouldn't want you to know that. Leonard was a master of the crowd, and a master at hiding all weaknesses.
I seem to remember this being the first PPV event I ever purchased.
„I wasn’t trying to steal rounds“. Sure Ray. Sure Ray.
He didnt steal rounds, dont blame Ray for the judges decision

Great breakdown brother, changed my perspective on this one.
Many thanks for your analysis of this unbelievable fight and showing a mere mortal like me the art involved in this much maligned sport. Sugar Ray was one of my heroes when I was young and I never appreciated the skill of some of his opponents but Hagler was unbelievable, in my opinion just as good he just went about it in a different way- sensational!!
On a Hagler CZcams binge since he's sparring with Ali somewhere in the next dimension.
