  • The waters are calm and clear again for snorkeling after Hurricane Douglas moved past us on Sunday. Time for some snorkeling at Black Rock in Kaanapali, Maui!
Henry and Hattie are at the babysitter's so Erica and I jumped out the door and in the water for some snorkeling at our favorite (best) #snorkeling spot in #Maui - Black Rock Beach outside of The Sheraton Maui Resort.
We share our tips on parking, where to find Hawaiian green sea turtles, and how to jump off of Black Rock if you dare. Leave your bag on Black Rock Beach and slip into the water for some amazing Maui snorkeling! Plus, the sunset Hurricane Douglas left behind was the best so far this year. Stay till the end to see it.
Kaanapali Beach and Black Rock are still empty as Hawaii stays closed to trans-Pacific travel. Enjoy views of these empty beaches while you can.
Hawaii will open though, so be prepared!

We were just snorkeling in the same spot two months ago. Thanks for the video, belatedly! Our biggest tip is to NOT enter the water near the rocks, it's really rocky and sharp there. We made the mistake of entering/exiting there and the waves about did us in on the way out of the water. To the left of the rocky places is nice sand. Next time! Another thing we mis-handled was the sunscreen situation. I had read about the reef-friendly sunscreen and we used that, but not often enough. We're not new to the beach scene, but we really messed up that day.

You can buy it on Maui at a snorkel store. Buy local!

This was our least favorite place, not because of its lack of beauty or snorkeling opportunities. It was just super busy (Thursday). We did stay for sunset here, and much of the crowd disappeared. Beautiful place to stay for the sunset, the hotel behind us was having a luau or hula show, so we were able to enjoy part of the show from the beach.

I've never seen it so empty and the water so clear. They is usually sand kicked up for the first 20-30 feet and assholes feeding the fish.
