    Thank you for your video. Restorative Community Circles is rewarding at the high school level too. We use similar ice breakers similar to the ones you referenced in your video.

    Awesome! This sounds pretty much like the Morning Meeting idea from the Responsive Classroom model. I've been doing morning meetings for the past four years with students in grades 4-8. Basically we start out with a greeting. I just have the kids turn to their right and then turn to their left and say "Good Morning!" while making eye contact. They can choose to wave, smile, high-five, or handshake. Then I go around the circle and each person gets 30 seconds to share anything they want with the group. Their peers can raise their hands to make a positive comment or ask a question. Next we play a short game like those you mentioned. It will either practice social or academic skills. Then we close with a morning message I have written on the board. It might introduce a skill or topic we will learn about that day or it may be a question or riddle to review what we have already learned. I move things along so each meeting takes about 20 minutes.

    Thank you for doing this! I've been wanting to do this in my classroom and I kept hearing "figure it out for yourself." I have 8th grade US History, and am also in California. Thanks for a starting point!
    (also I just found your Vlog last week and have been devouring it. Thank you for creating it!)

    I completely understand wanting total control of how kids move from place to place and giving explicit instruction to do that! I'm finishing my student teaching (I graduate in 6 days!) and one of my biggest issues has been how to control the chaos. I don't want to micromanage them, but I know structure and routine makes everyone feel safe and keeps *me* from losing it.

    Thank you for explaining this so well! I used to work under an principal from Australia and unfortunately he didn't do a good job of explaining it- it put too much pressure on teachers to solve huge behavioral problems because the administration was overloaded. Needless to say I didn't have a very good first impression with restorative practices. However I'm with a different school now and think that what you're describing is very doable. I'm excited to try this- I think my class will love it.

    • @toocoolformiddleschoolblog
      @toocoolformiddleschoolblog  Před 7 lety +1

      Oh wow, I can see how administrators would be tempted to use it like that! But it's more just about creating a positive class culture. We actually did a few restorative circle games in our staff meeting today and it was kind of fun!

    Aw!! Thank you so so much for this. It's been really interesting to watch and you explain things so well! I'd really love to try this out. How old are sixth graders? Do you do this with 30 kids? Is it totally oral or do they write anything? I'd appreciate if you could share a list of prompt questions in your blog or maybe some other teachers could throw suggestions here. Again thanks so much for this, it's very useful. Take care and enjoy the rest of your holidays. I'm back on Monday!😬🤓

      dublinro8 Hi! My 6th graders are usually 11 or 12, and yep, I do it with groups of 30-plus. They aren't allowed to have anything in the circle, so we don't do any writing. It's all just speaking and listening. You just reminded me that I need to re-launch my blog that's in a total coma and put up a list of questions. Coming soon!

      Thank you so much for sharing this video. I am teaching Grade 10 students here in Manila, Philippines. Started doing this today with 44 students.. yeah , like 44! ooohhh... my concern is truly control.. , Is this truly possible for an audience of 44 ??? like a truly big solid group? Just a bit concerned with TOTAL CONTROL.. thanks!

    I LOVE this idea. It’s really similar to the process 12 step groups use. I’m training in special education now and I think restorative circles would be a great thing for ED/BD kids to do in inclusion. Does anyone have experience doing restorative circles in special education?

Do you have any resources that you consult frequently, or other youtubers you watch? (I've watched all your videos, so I guess it's time to start branching out haha!)

    My district has been implementing this approach since the end of covid shut downs. What a disaster. Stufent behavior and attitudes have become so much worse. Students have become pretentious, self centered, narcissists. If you even suggest they change their behavior to create a better place of learning they look at you like you are crazy. "Change my behavior, whats that?". They basically believe that anything they do or say must be acceptable because it comes from them. Teachers are retiring in droves because schools have become bastions of chaos and dysfunction.

  • @amybergman-valla9281
    @amybergman-valla9281 Před 6 lety +1

    Have you ever experienced when you play "I wonder if there are any people who..." a student sharing and finding that NO one else has that same characteristic or quality, etc. What do you do then to make that student feel ok and/ keep facilitating the next "I wonder..." participant? And I don't mean the student that purposely says something to have it happen. I am referring to the student who shares openly and views something as a norm but it just might not be norm for the rest of the group. (I hope my question makes sense to you.). Thank you.

    Hi Megan! Do you still do restorative circles?

  • @BusyMissBeebe
    @BusyMissBeebe Před 7 lety +1

    My school uses the OLWEUS program for anti-bullying. It works so well that by the time I have the students (in 10th grade), having class meetings is kind of pointless. Plus, I'm not a "sit in a circle so we can discuss our feelings" kind of person. Restorative circles sounds similar to OLWEUS class meetings, but maybe more my style. I think next time I'll try to run my class meeting more like a restorative circle and see how I feel about it. Thanks for the ideas.

    • @toocoolformiddleschoolblog
      @toocoolformiddleschoolblog  Před 7 lety

    • @rodlaws9653
      @rodlaws9653 Před 3 lety

      this is also a good idea for Socratic Seminars. It doesn't have to be a restorative circle but it also gives the students a chance for you to process their thinking on the content while they are offering their perspectives!
