    Nice kriti singing, with bhaava, and superb kalpanaswarams. Sri Nagai Sriram's Brindavana saaranga alapana is excellent. Observe how he gives time between phrases or sangatis for the beauty of the sangatis to sink in the listeners' minds. Singing continuously or playing continuously without breaks is like pouring water over a stone, and it doesn't give the listeners' minds time and opportunity to experience the ananda the melody is supposed to generate.

    There is an interpretation of brindavana saranga that sounds like this, very explicit especially in this composition of Dikshitar.. So, what he intended to sing is correct.

      +Chitra Ramani I'am sorry if a offended you miss Chitra! i was a bit confused. I've not have any teachers to guide me in carnatic music, and I've learned everything on my own here in Europe. But i do not understand why you guys perceive this as a criticism? i was just asking a question. Carnatic music will never ever develop unless we open up for discussion ! I'am not even allowed to ask a question just because he is a legend??? Carnatic music will die with this generation, if you guyst don't encourages youngsters and foreigners like us!

      +thelabadabada ShrI M Dikshitar ' s brindavana saranga is conventional. Use of two Nishadams is more modern in convention. So he has sung it correctly as ShrI Dikshitar wrote it.

      I am sorry, but I agree with thelabadabada. Sri TNS is an extraordinary singer and there is no need for an ordinary chap like me to have to certify him. He is singularly responsible for so many fantastic renditions that can never be taken away. Brilliant gamakas, incredible interpretations of rAgas, astounding vocal range, extraordinary knowledge, versatility (vocal, veena, and harikatha form) are all characteristics of his music. However, for a student of the art form, Sri TNS, along with the likes of Sri BMK, remain unapproachable at best and an enigma for sure. If a student sings Brindavana Saranga like this, they will be told that there is too strong a flavor of madhyamAvati, and in some places sri raga (check 22:04 where rgrs or sgrs is presented). Now, purely from the perspective of a show, I think Sri TNS has earned the right to do what he wants. However, the point is whether this mutation needs to be recognized as such, or glossed over. I don't think it should be glossed over, and thelabadabada is right to point it out.

      +enriching exchanges if a student of music sings brindavana Saranga like this it will be appreciated by knowledgeable musicians and not criticised as you have done now. Brindavani is the ragam that has two Nishadam. Brindavana Saranga is a Raga according to Dhikshithars composition has only one Nishadam that's N2, and as far as Srgrs, it's very much confining to the sangeetha sampradaya pradharshini notation for this kriti. Please do check all information while talking thanks.

      Deshen Pillay So I can not ask a question just because he is a living legend! I want to know if I have misinterpreted the way he sings the raga! Well give me a good explanation on how he sings the raga? wich swaras is he using?

    • @MrGunkanna
      @MrGunkanna Před 9 lety +5

      thelabadabada - Arohana and avarohana are only guidelines. In fact they came into existence much later. Raga bhava goes more in accordance with various other things - jeeva swaras and other such concepts. A major difference between brindavana saranga and Madhyamavati is in the gamaka prayoga (similar is the difference between thodi and sindhu bhairavi if u exclude the anya swaras). Nature of gamakas and the way they are used is extremely crucial is differentiating raagas. Also, in the north indian version of the raaga - S R2 M P N1 ... is commonly used prayoga. Under the assumption that Shri Deekshitar learnt of this raga during his travel in the north ... i think its valid enough. Also, as Subu mentions here ... the song itself has the prayoga R2 M P N1 ...

    What a set of clowns! I mean the trio: Seshagopalan, his kid and the Kanjira guy. I wish they could learn some "Sabha respect". And especially, his kid is totally annoying.

    • @enrichingexchanges
      @enrichingexchanges Před 5 lety +3

      I see where you are coming from, that it is distracting. But, clowns? Come one. Why so harsh? Have you ever sat behind a legend like TNS when he is belting out a kiRtanA like soundara rAjam and experience it real-time? Any one with a trace of musical sensibility will have to forget themselves and a sense of where they are. You know what, I am typing this sitting in the comfort of my chair, and I am transfixed, and I am finding it hard to type and put a thought together. It is that mesmerizing. So, I don't fault them for getting into the music.

      To be honest, till I came across your comment (in the 8th minute), I had not even looked at the video much except initially to register the faces.
      I think you are used to seeing music videos where people look good and make some noise. Here it is just the opposite.
      You may want to listen again (with closed eyes if you prefer).
