      I really wanna go for hair color apps but I'm worried about having to stand for long periods of time. I have had 9 surgeries including 2 back surgeries....so I think I'm gonna go for nails or heck maybe even esthetics. Do you know of a good school for Esthetics?

      First off I have to say I am addicted to your videos Silvia!
      I am a cosmetology student at Aveda Institute Minneapolis, and your video is so so so true. You can't avoid cattyness/drama, keep your head up & I guess I always try to remember that the people who act the worst, those are the people you are going to be competing against for jobs in the salon, I believe employers will see/predict unprofessionalism. I loved what you had to say about just diving in and taking risks... there are totally a bunch of boring parts of cosmo school (doing your 900th pin curl set haha) but when you have the opportunity to do a crazy corrective color that's going to take you 9 hours, do it. I see so many girls passing up tickets (clients) because they'll miss lunch or whatever. Lastly I would also say...my favorite part of beauty school other than hair color (I want to specialize and be a color tech at Juut in Palo Alto!) is the energy of the school. You have the people who really just shouldn't be there but overall everyone is excited and inspired, which is inspiring in and of itself.
      Again love your vids! You were the inspiration for my website! Would mean the world for you to check me out AT www.blondeluxe.com

      When you were looking at schools what was the main reason that you chose Aveda? I would love to go to cosmetology school if U ever get better lol... I have had a lot of medical issues. Also if you don't mind me asking how much was/is it for tutition compared to other schools that you might've looked at? I had a dear friend go through the Aveda cos program and she said that it was worth it but she is no longer doing hair and is now studying business. I am not quite sure why though. Thanks for you help and I'll be checking out your blog too!

    I'm actually a man in cosmetology school. I love it! It's really great, and I absolutely love theory, but I was a nerd all through high school, so that was expected out of me. Anxiety is a big issue for me, so if you have social anxiety or just anxiety in general, but hair is your passion, I would suggest carrying around mints all day to calm you, and taking breaks when you need them to calm down. There is a lot of drama between the girls in my school, but the best thing to do is stay out of it.

    Spot on! I graduated cosmetology school last year. My biggest thing was not letting the drama get to you. My school was small (less than 20 students) and the drama and cattiness was horrible. I love what I do now though. Great video!

    There was so much Drama in mine. I like to iron some of my curly blow waves as ironing, blow waving and a combination of both all have different results. Someone who had less industry experience then I did (I have been in the industry since 09 whether it be as a stylist or salon assistant) and some one who was new to the industry walked up to me and said "You know, you shouldn't need to iron it."
    We also had two girls almost punch on in my first school (that school was a joke. No teacher for 4 months and most the girls were ratchet as).
    My second school had a lady come in. This women had thigh length hair that was also quite dense. She smelled quite horrendous and obviously had some mental issues. My school knew how nice I was so they put me on her. Her hair was really difficult. She sweated so much that I pretended I must have soaked her with the basin. I believe that she appreciated that. The poor women obviously had social issues and the fat that we spoke about KFC the entire time made her day. I was a vegan at the time. I think she gave me the best lesson. Even though she was a difficult client I made her day and that is what matters. She took 3 hours as her hair was long and I was physically having issues with the body odder (though I had a really good poker face). She left feeling beautiful. I suggest that students never pass up that opportunity because it's a great lesson.
    That same day I was really ill afterwards. I'm not saying it was that womens fault because I do have digestive issues. But my teacher noticed my work was flat and that I was flat. She she got me to be a hair model for some of the newer students. My class was ahead so a few of us were chosen. The guy who I was given to was a winger. He was the annoying kind of flamboyant gay. The type that exaggerate everything. He wanted my classmate but the teacher wanted to challenge him as my hair was thick with colour damage. So he took me over to the sink. I gave him some suggestions on shampooing. He ignored me, called over his friend and started bitching about his class mate. I of course was annoyed as I was his client. Anyway, he got me over to the chair and started combing me out. His friend came over and they were talking again. Then the guy they were bitching about walked over, apologised and asked if they were cool. The guy who was supposed to be doing my hair said "Yeah, we're cool. But talk to me again and I'll ram a blow dryer down your throat." No joke. He then stormed off leaving me dripping wet. His friend ended up blow drying my hair and apologising. So after that my class mates and I had to report him. We decided we would do it after school. So we went into the laundry to do towels and there he was bitching about the teachers. He said he was going to punch one of them in the face and was basically being a disturbance. So we ended up telling the teachers about the incident. The teacher was like "omg don't tell me" as this was usual behaviour. The next day he was asked to leave as he told the guidance councillor that he was, "going to get my dad to smash your face in". If drama pops up sometimes its best to let the authorities know especially if its going to disrupt your learning.

For any of you women wanting to go, it is SOO worth it. You actually LOVE your work, and have fun doing it! Thanks Ms Sylvia for another Amazing video! Stay sweet and ill see u Monday! hehe.......
    Oh Yeah, my favorite part of cosmetology was meeting a lot of different women, and men, whom i still keep in touch with today. I'm currently attending school for hair and nails. My only complaint so far is that I can see that it doesn't take much to be a teacher, seeing how a few of my instructors are giving out incorrect information which is scary as some of the girls in my classes aren't aware that it's incorrect. But as the student, I feel like I'm crossing a line if I were to correct my instructor, so for now I'm just doing my own thing until I can get back out onto the floor. It's been interesting.

    I have a lot of salon experience and hair experience in general. I generally enjoy doing anything beauty related. I'm proud of my portfolio--but question! I'm debating working for more experience... or heading back to school as a cosmetology instructor (I really enjoy school!)
    What's your opinion of stylists (with under 5years of experience) becoming instructors? In my area (Seattle, WA), there seems to be a lot of flack! I personally am weary of anyone who becomes an instructor right out of school because they are training furture professionals with no salon or real life experience.

      Joey Posner The thing that I love about Cosmetology, and the beauty world all together, its a judgement free zone. At least for the most part. You will sill have your idiots, but it won't be anything like you think it is.
      They're plenty of boys in the industry. We had a few boys at my school and at my new school we just have one from what I saw but he's never judge or anything like that. Some of the top cosmetologist and Makeup artist are men.

      NP and some of the top beauty schools are also started and founded by men. Men have a huge impact on the beauty industry believe it or not. Don't care about what you get bullied about today. Because while you're guaranteed a job after your schooling whether its freelance or at a salon etc, they're still going to be stuck in their parents house or struggling in college! Do what makes you happy!

    When I was in school, I noticed alot of the instructors were very old-school. Also, alot of the girls simply expected skills were to come to them so they just coasted through and didnt learn a thing.
    In reality, you yourself have to take the reigns on your own and take advantage of clients. Mess up on them and learn. Use the guidence but learn and practice on your own. It's not time to be scared of the result or being judged by your fellow students or instructors because it's a learning experience. You'll learn and grow for the professional world so mess up and be judged in school, not when you're out making money. That's my tip because I regret not doing so.

    Can you do a video on hair cuts and face shapes? I have no idea what would look good on me right now. I can't seem to picture how it would look going shorter for example. I wish I could cut it off then put it back if I don't like it! lol. I have oval or oblong face shape and love less layers, but hairstylist all seem to think I look good with them. :)

    I am in the process of looking for the right cosmetology school! I often am told to go to community college since its cheaper and that you learn the same stuff, but another part of me thinks a higher end would be better. Any advice would be great!

      Gabriella Chavez you def learn more and get more out of a private cosmetology school. You get what you pay for. You def dont get hands on color creating experience in community college cosmo school. But if price is an issue and you just want to have your license community is the way to go :)

    what is your opinion on going to smaller schools? I currently go to cosmetology school at the local community college because it's so much cheaper than Aveda. but I'm worried I'm not getting the kind of experience I need and I won't have the big name school to make me competitive in the industry. I've been told that it matters more where I assist when I get out of School, but I'm worried I might not get that opportunity without the PM or Aveda experience. What are your thoughts? I am scared to take out that huge of a loan, but I am willing to do it for the sake of my career.

    Hi Silvia! I was just like you. I read my entire book and highlighted it cover to cover before I started my program. It took a lot of stress off of me. Tests went really smooth. I focused on my work and did a lot of research outside of school. I'm licensed in Socal. When I finished, I set up my website and social media and arranged a photo shoot for my portfolio. I ended up moving and away and doing house calls for a year and a half. I continued to go to shows and travel for education. I got education in London, Chicago and NYC. I'm headed back to LA in the fall and I really want to get into a lux salon. I'm hoping my advanced education will help. What tips do you have for me to get into a high-end and what should be our expectation for work after finishing of cosmetology school?

      Cosmetology is mostly hair, nails, and face. Makeup is more esthetics. There are some schools that offer both courses. I would recommend doing more research, though.

    • @elainagarrett31800
      @elainagarrett31800 Před 8 lety

      In Cosmetology school, you'll learn mainly hair. You'll also learn nails, makeup, facials, and waxing. Actually, you learn just as much makeup in cosmetology as esthetics as far as I've heard. You don't learn more than the basics though in either program. If you want in depth makeup classes it's probably best if you take a makeup artistry class. Esthetics is mainly skincare and hair removal, not much makeup and you won't learn hair AT ALL. Keep that in mind. If I were you I'd definitely do Cosmetology! I've done a ton of research about esthetics and cosmetology and it is what I am doing as well.

      Taylor Reid As a former Aveda student (which I had a bad experience in) and a future professional at Paul Mitchell, I really suggest going to a big name school. All cosmetology schools pretty much cost the same. I really suggest that whatever school you go to, make sure its a top notch school, with a top notch reputation. Don't look so much into the small local schools with only one location. I say that because it doesn't look as good on a resume unless the school is like limited edition and have that good of a reputation which most small schools like that don't. Its not to say that small schools don't have that good of a reputation or can't but big name schools like Aveda or Paul Mitchell (the Harvard and Yale of the beauty industry lol) can really get you far a lot faster and can give you many promising advantages and opportunities. I can go on forever. Even though I had a bad experience at Aveda, not all locations are the same. So for the most part, I really recommend Aveda and PM as they are the top beauty schools and I ensure you will get the best education there.

      I think after everything, tuition, books and our kit, its was 25k+ Most private cosmetology schools, such as Aveda, Paul mitchell, and redken affiliated schools are all about that price. However if its something you're really passionate about I def recommend it.

    • @TheJaimeLong
      @TheJaimeLong Před 10 lety

      ellebangs Do you think from your experience that taking out a loan for the 25k will be paid back within the first 1-2 years after you start working or is it longer? How would you compare the cost vs schooling you got to the cheaper alternatives? Do you notice a major difference and can "tell" that someone went to a cheaper alternative school?

    • @willp9891
      @willp9891 Před 8 lety

      +Julie Hammel Honestly, if youre bored with what youre doing now, you should try it. While it is a commitment at least its not something like a four year degree or anything. If you already enjoy cosmetology related things then I feel like you'd really enjoy it. Age doesn't determine anything it's never too late to change the path you're walking on

    • @elainagarrett31800
      @elainagarrett31800 Před 8 lety

      Yes, I think it's wise to do so. If it's what you think you'd like to do then I would definitely recommend you do it. You shouldn't stay at a job that makes you unhappy or that you don't enjoy. If money is a problem, you can go to a community college or tech college and it will be much cheaper than somewhere like Aveda or Paul Mitchell. I was going to go to Paul Mitchell but i didn't want to spend $20,000 to learn what you'll learn in a community college. After I graduate my community college cosmetology program I'm going to a Paul Mitchell for advanced education on cutting and coloring hair. It will come out way cheaper and I won't be paying back for school for years. My program is going to cost $4000 which is $16,000 dollars cheaper than a big name school. It won't take you years to get your license either so I suggest you go for it! good luck!
