Hello Richard, actually I cannot say something about the requirement of an external fuel pump. We didn‘t tested that yet, due to fact that we didn‘t recognized a problem on the lower cylinders. But you should know that not every Moki 250 needs a fuel pump or is having a problem on the lower cylinders! A big affect is the quality of the 20$ carburettor and how sensible you can do the needle adjustements on the dot. Of course the needle adjustement will be much more easy with a fuel pump. But this is something what I‘am also expecting for the Blackstar. On this engine I don’t feel the need to use an external fuel pump.In term of performance I‘am really surprised about the acceleration. The engine answers very quick on demand. The maximum bottom speed is a little bit lower than my Moki250. The difference is roundabout 300rpm with the same prop. I think this is related to the longer stroke compared to the Moki. On the other hand longer strokes means more torque on low rpm. But this is something what i cannot measure on such a test bench. Anyway, in my opinion the speeds in the air are more representive than the speeds on the bottom. We have also to consider that this was the first run, which means the needle adjustments were light rich.
But there is also something which is from my point of view better solved on the Moki. According to the manual, there are 4 cams on the cam disk which means that you have to do the valve clearance adjustments 4 times per cylinder. On the Moki there are only 2 cams on the disk.
In the end of the day I can say this engine is defintely an alternative.
We are planning to do some more tests.

Your comment could not be more incorrect. Mixture distribution has absolutely nothing to do with fuel delivery.

Hi, your comment isn´t right. A have totally different esperience on my Moki 7/250. After adding fuel pump I can set needles to much leaner settings and get very stable fuel delivery, not like on internal fuel pump. Definitely for Moki I can say - go for pump, will get better working engine than on internal pump.

Does this engine require (or benefit from) an external fuel pump like a Moki? Overall, how does the performance compare with a Moki 250?

more than 4000 rpm on the ground is too much for this kind of engines. Try to stay around 3400-3500. In flight it will go around +1000 rpm up!
