  • *NOW DEMOLISHED -- land being sold off as farm land*
Exploring this former hospital known as Southwest Regional Center which is made up of 24 buildings totalling 650,000 square feet sitting on almost 300 acres of land. It even has its own sewage and hydro generating plant. It opened in 1961 as the last massive institution built in Ontario for the treatment of various psychiatric conditions and disabilities.
By the mid-60s, there were 1200 patients and 600 staff members. By 1979, this had decreased by around half that amount as patients were slowing transitioning to the community. The provincial government made a decision to close this hospital on Oct 30, 2008 as patients were now being treated in a community-based setting.
I was granted permission by the owner to explore this former institution. It was a legal requirement that he send one of his employees to come along.
There are plans to demolish it, so it has been abandoned as a hospital as well as converting into anything else. It will be a shame as the builders spared no expense into the construction of this facility using nothing but the best materials.
A couple teams of ghost hunters spent two weekends here. An army also was using the building for practice which resulted in many loud explosions and broken walls.
The horror movie "Kingdom Come" used this hospital last year (early 2013) for 90% of their scenes as you will note in the video along with a scene setup still in place. The film is about a group of people that wake up in an abandoned hospital, so the perfect location. Apparently, the crew were quite freaked out over being inside this facility and all of them heard a little girl laughing, so believe it to be haunted. Here is the link to that story:

I worked for Community Living and one of the clients in our group home came from this institution. The client's mother was sooo glad that her child was out of there and living in the community. There's more but I can't say... Watching this tour makes me sad...

It's a shame this wasn't turned into a university or preparatory school; reverting it back to farmland seems such a waste. While I don't relish the idea of farmland being turned into institutions, that it was already done, and large amounts of money were spent, should have been taken into greater consideration before just throwing all that away.

Unfortunately there was a lot of asbestos and black mold lingering in that building. Turning it into something else would've been impossible and extremely expensive. I know tearing it down seems like such a waste, but digging up that property would be very dangerous.

I did my co-op here when I was in HIGH SCHOOL and worked here for a few summers thereafter.
It was just as creepy when it was in full swing, especially those tunnels-- now that I know the MORGUE is down there, it all makes a lot more sense!! Cool walkthrough! I had a dream about this place last night and came to youtube to remember it! GAH!!!

I actually had an uncle that was mentally disabled from birth that lived there until his death at age 50. Our family used to go there at Christmas time to visit my uncle and I can remember accompanying my grandfather to his dormitory and getting him, he used to walk with us to the cafeteria towing his red wagon with his buddy doll to the cafeteria to meet the rest of the family and having many hours of fun with my uncle and family. This was a great video and brought back many great memories of my visits there and meeting many people of different backgrounds and situations that brought them to live in such an institution.

There are actual videos out there on CZcams on something called ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) that I just learned of recently. It's found that triggers such as crumbling paper, certain other noises and soft voices help with relaxation and sleep. I actually watch them before bed each night and it puts me right out as well. :)

    • @Arthixful

***** Yes, I watch those occasionally but I do seem to find the real/natural sounds in something like this video relax me more than someone chewing some gum into the mic for 20mins or playing with bubble wrap etc. SoftlyGaloshes made a camping ASMR video once that I enjoyed but I haven't seen anything else like that yet.

Muhammad ran from his attackers 13 years, finally relocating 300 miles to Madinah to avoid violence. Then his attackers followed him to Madinah and forced war on him. He defended Madinah and was victorious. He was given scriptures to Kill the " unbelieving attackers who had been attacking him for 13 years. Islam instructed Muhammad how to defend Madinah, not to go out killing and conquesting like Christians killed 10 million Natives and stole the usa, and enslaved 30 Blacks and forced them to be Christians and wear white people's names.

Good video. My father delivered groceries to that place when he was young and he hated doing it. This place is very scary and it was not a good place with people who have disabilities. It is a place of pain and suffering for the people who were in there. It is a good thing they are tearing it down. Also the surrounding towns are very tiny trust me there is no need for a university or a homeless shelter because there is barely any homeless. It is much better to tear it down. No need for it in my hometown at all.

Hi Pam. Thanks for sharing your latest video. Very cool place. Reminds me of this place we had around here. It was a mental hospital that was closed when the state closed all these facilities. I talked a few friends into checking the place out with me. Must be 15 years ago now. There wasn't much left inside, but we did manage a few gurney races. haha. Too bad we live far apart, you in Canada and me in New Jersey, I would love to take a tour or two with you. Seems like there's more to explore by you. There's not much around here anymore. Most everything has been built over already. Really gotta travel to find a place. But anyway, sorry this is so long. I'll wrap it up. Thanks again for the new post. Have fun out there. • @spiritofcrazyhorse8322

The area shown at 7:18 would have had stationary equipment (most likely steam kettles) that would have had be washed in place, so that's what all the faucets are for. They were probably either sold or stolen. There are two still there shown at 7:03. You can see the faucets above those too. That big dishwasher is worth some $$$. I'm surprised they haven't sold it. Thanks for taking the time to poke around the kitchen. Most explorers just give kitchens a quick scan. Having worked in several kitchens like this, I'm always interested in seeing the equipment. The older, the better. Kitchens are the soul of any place so I always think if an area is going to have spirits around, it would be the kitchen.

My dad used to work here in the 90's, doing maintenance. He told us all kinds of stories about how massive the basement was where he would do most of his work...they had bicycles all over the place so you could get to where you were going faster. He brought me out there once, I was in my early to mid-teens, for one of the centre's family recreation days. Residents and staff could bring their families and there was food and games and entertainment, almost like a fair.

Then it would illuminate more of the rooms you investigate. It's hard to get a good idea of what these places are like when your light only illuminates a small spot on the wall.

Awsome creepy location, now I have to watch that movie. I have to admit I like it better when you are by yourself , but your laughter was cute. I'm sure it is nice to have a guide and know it's ok to be there. Thanks for the video!

There was a place like this only older in my little home town . . .an old mental institution. It's so sad how much of these old public institutions could have been recycled but weren't.

Fascinating place! There seem to be several movies called "Kingdom Come." I wonder which it be.
By the way, listening to your voice is a great tranquilizer. ^_^ I mean that in a good way LOL.
I knew when I saw the thumbnail there was no way I'd put off watching this and was not disappointed in the least. I knew if there was an operating room there had to be a morgue in case the surgeon botched the operation. (Okay, that's macabre lol) I just wasn't sure he'd let ya see it. I do declare all those peeling murals would probably have the opposite effect of making some depressed sap cheery! And that clown creeped me out rofl.
Thank you for another splendid video, Pam. :)
    Sincerely,
    Lewis

Thank you, Lewis. Seems I put a lot of people to sleep with my voice, lol.
The movie is actually of the horror genre. I've put some links in the description above. One for the news story of the crew and filming in this location, one for the movie info on IMBd, and one is a link to the trailer. In the trailer, I could recognize some of the hospital. It was kind of eerie to see that. Actually, I believe the freight elevator was close by to the morgue as well, lol! :)

Well Pam I have actually work in institutions very similar to this back awhile, most don't exists anymore due to the rising cost of health & maintenance, the care those clients received was good, I am not so sure they get that type of care in community living, doubtful, & there were the arguments of institutionalisation and sometimes abuse. Nice Pam thanks for some good memories of Clients & Nurses long since gone. but never forgotten.:-]

Much nicer accommodations than the streets that our mentally ill are now expected to inhabit, and ain't no marble bathrooms in the prisons, their other option.

    • @christinetheresa7416
      @christinetheresa7416 Před 6 lety

Craig Cottingham The closures of these facilities were done for money. All the arguments about community care were smokescreen for tossing people out to fend for themselves. I know someone who was in a state facility here in Michigan when it was closed. Patients were handed bags for their belongings and bus tokens. Many of the patients can't deal with minimal community care. Now no one wants them. Group homes are mostly interested in developmentally disabled not mentally ill, there are no long term state hospitals open and regular hospitals with psych units only want short stay patients who will be there for under 30 days for stabilization and then leave. No one wants the chronically severely mentally ill. They end up homeless or incarcerated.

The worker failed to tell the history properly of this institute... this place is highly known for the class action lawsuit of neglect abuse and even deaths... It was the hidden main reason this building closed... There is now a plaque out front of this building apologizing to the families of the lives lost and apologizing for violating our trust in the government... Its actually pretty deep... I went threw this building before demolition... looks exactly as it did when you went threw and they left all the incident reports... They were pretty disturbing to read how they treated them... If you look up on the internet enough you can find the news coverage. And when talking to retired workers that live in the sub division next door they all get very quite and weird when you bring the topic up... This place has a super disturbing past and thats what made it so amazing to explore... Ill miss it... I moved across the country and I visited home a month ago and all that stands is the pool... Memories...

My daughter and son-in-law did their DSW placement there. Also my son-in-law's dad worked there when it was first opened. They did not ever see any abuse going on. All of St. Clair College DSW's did their placements at that hospital.
