Urbex: ABANDONED Reverend's House of MEMORIES!

- Happy Thanksgiving to all of my U.S. subscribers! This abandoned house I explored is full of history. If one could spend a full day here exploring, they could learn a lot. I was able to gather a bit of information from the names I had found in the house checking with the Ancestory.com website.
The house was owned by a reverend (Arthur) and his wife (Esther). Arthur was born in 1897 and passed away in 1971. Esther was born in 1893 and passed away in 1997. She graduated from Moody Bible Institute in August 9th, 1923. The couple had four kids together. One was a boy who died at the age of 6 in 1938. The remaining kids' names were Gordon, Dorothy and Donald.
There was a supposed attic fire in 1988, and the latest calendar date I saw was 1990, although dates on the cassette tapes dated to the late 1990s. Therefore, the house was most likely abandoned shortly after Esther's passing in 1997.
Regarding the dead animal pictures, one of the sons, Gordon, had a love for his pet ducks, so I'm assuming they were trapped, killed and mutilated in anger for killing his cherished pet ducks.

Pam, I have to tell you all the information I learned after seeing the series of videos Jake of Bright Sun Films made of this property and one of its former residents! So if the house was originally built in the 19th century its last occupants weren't the original ones. Edith Gladstone, who graduated from that bible college in Chicago you mentioned, married the reverend Arthur Lee (a few years her junior) after graduating from that school in the 1920s, and the family were deeply involved in missionary work in Africa. Ms. Gladstone went on a missionary trip to the continent shortly before graduating and the Lees were mentioned in an article in a Missouri newspaper as having just come back from a missionary trip there when it touted a visit they made to a local church in 1930, which is just two years after their eldest child James Gordon was born, meaning it's not out of the question to assume that Gordon (which is the name he went by) was born during that African missionary trip. Presumably they settled into that house not long after giving that talk, and had either three or four other children. There was one additional son and a daughter plus a third son who died as a young child, and some suspect there may have also been a second daughter in the family.
Anyway, Mr. Lee passed away in the early 1970s, by which time one presumes Gordon's younger siblings had already moved out and started families of their own, and Gordon and his mother were left alone in that house, though some have suggested they may have taken in foster children, presumably girls, and devoted that entire second level of the residence to those foster girls. They did not abandon the residence at the time of that electric fire in 1988 as Jake and his exploring partners found evidence of people living at that house as recently as the beginning of the 21st century, at which point the house was presumed abandoned. Mrs. Lee passed away in the late '90s and some have suggested Gordon, who was a high school dropout, was a dependent adult and may have only been able to survive on his own a couple of years after his mother's death before being put into a residential facility of some kind.
Also, all of those audio tapes you saw around the house were all recordings Gordon made of either himself talking, off-air material taken from the news (he apparently had a special interest in the news), or music he was a fan of, and it was Gordon who had that special interest in conspiracy theories. Oh, and he kept ducks (or mallards) as companions and if the raccoons were the animals he felt to blame for the duck attacks he would have probably found it very easy to harm them, as one of the tapes Jake played for the viewers of one of his videos was one Gordon made of a mouse stuck in a glue trap. It's too bad the house was messed with sometime between your visit and Jake's as it caused him to miss out on a lot of the things you spotted on your visit, including those reel-to-reel recordings you spotted that would've probably unveiled a lot more of Gordon's earlier recordings.
Oh, and it's more than likely that Gordon is still alive because his parents' burial sites included a space for him and also left a space for his information on their gravestone, and while it lists Gordon's parents' birth and death dates it only lists Gordon's birth date. Also, there is evidence someone found that Gordon's sister has passed away but not his surviving brother.
BTW, while you were able to spot a lot of things that Jake couldn't spot during his visit(s) he or his exploring partner Brennen did discover a secret, hidden tiny bedroom on that second level just beyond where you spotted that attic space, and it was about half the size of the smallest upstairs bedroom you spotted. Anyway, just wanted to let you know what I've found out about this property and its final residents from other sources. Edit: also, you know how you found that "Prayer for the Epp family" postcard? Edith and Mary Epp, presumably the matriarch of the Epp family, were in the same graduating class at that Bible college they attended!
Gordon Lee is probably dead by now, otherwise he would be in his 90's.
The stonegrave with the names and dates is no evidence that he is alive. You really think that the county would bother carving a stonegrave with his name? With nobody to reclaim his body and pay the expenses, they rather throw the corpse into the common pit. Most probably was incinerated and disposed.
The noose at the end, with the chair and the stain on the floor make the suicide hypothesis real.
He lived with his mother Esther until she died in 1997 at the age of 104! after that he was completely alone and probably broke. Around 2 years later he allegedly committed suicide, died due to age or was taken away by social workers.
In the case he died at home, I would not be surprised if the police were the first to trash the house looking for "clues".
Most likely his brother Donald is dead or too old. If he had nephews, they might be unaware or do not have the money to get there and reclaim the property, nor want to go near a house where some relative allegedly committed suicide. Besides the property might be intestate and in deep debt due to unpaid taxes.
Thank you for all the information! I've seen other videos of the same house and always wondered about the background of the people living here. Sort of sad feeling throughout the house, I imagine Gordon was a lonely old soul at the end.
I've been watching some of these videos since I ran across them on CZcams. Personally, I find them extremely saddening. Just thinking at one time people laughed, cried and lived their lives in these houses.

It's very chilling and weird watching an abandoned house like this .. it just looks like everyone dropped everything in a heartbeat and disappeared .. really makes you wonder what happened !

Actually she said that the toilet was an elderly ladies toilet but in reality, it's a portable toilet used for camping. The round nut on the top part is for fresh rinsing water and the round nut on the bottom part is to empty the poop out of the holding tank.

It saddens me to see so many pictures left behind. I cherish the old photos of my family dating back almost 100 years. Maybe there is a historical society that could find someone from the family line or something. and I could definitely watch a long video of yours also...I am a true fan now😁
We come into this world with nothing and we leave with nothing.
Unless one leaves a legacy or has children. Apparently this Gordon was a recluse. Never married (from an audio tape BSF played). Still, this really drives home the point of just how temporary and fragile life really is and how people can be so comfortable in their discomfort.

Wow how fun was that! I was borne in 1957 and a lot of that old stuff reminded me of my grandmas old house when I was young, I remember my dad also having a bunch of those old vacuum tubes as he worked on old TV's and radios, the place is like a time capsule! Thanks For The Trip and all that you do.
My pleasure, Mark! Glad to take you on a trip down memory lane. I remember my father as well having a large brown paper bag of those vacuum tubes. He'd have me find certain ones for him in his work shop as he'd make repairs on old electronics.
9:14 "slashed poultry" There have been a few occasions where the neighbors dogs had come onto our place and killed our ducks/chickens. We had to take pictures of the carnage to show the authorities so we could get the neighbors to get a handle on their dogs. Dogs tend to maul birds, like you see in those pictures.
I was thinking the same thing. My neighbors kept chickens and after some dogs slaughtered them, they took the same kinds of pics to show the authorities.
In Fl, i had the same problem w/ neighbor's dogs. Thank God they didn't kill my hens since i ran out there with a rifle hearing them hollering. Caught their dog and no casualties; they were apologetic.
Did you post each animal on poster boards? Because whatever the reason, that’s just weird.
Yeah we have had similar things happen and we had to take pictures for the sheriff but we never made and kept collages of them.
Best one yet. I can't stop watching. There's something very apocalyptic about these videos. My wife is very much into pictures and videos and seeing these people were as well makes me wonder where all the things that we accumulate in our home will one day wind up. You can see the care that went into so many things in this home and to see them just totally abandoned is disconcerting. There's no way I could ever do this the way you do. You have so much integrity. I would have to pick up something and bring it home. A movie or an audio cassette just to maybe hear their voices. This one was particularly enthralling. All these abandoned places with so much stuff left behind, makes me wonder why the people left seemingly in such a big hurry. Its kinda creepy, like from a horror show or something lol. And I get freaked out when ever u go to look in a fridge or deep freeze. I'm like, oh God, what's shoved in there! I guess I need to cut back on the horror movies and ghost shows! Lol.

There’s a creepy secret bedroom through a crawl space just to the right as you reach the top of the stairs. I was hoping Tiki found it too and looked under the bed! But she didn’t....

WOW! I usually catch your explores soon after you post them but I must have missed this one! I honestly have to say there was something intrinsically weird with all the pink paint including coat hangers. all the reel to reel equipment, all the old record players, the makeshift bedrooms located on a porch, and lastly all the photos of slashed ducks and dead racoons. Couple this with the religious books, diplomas, etc it really is out there. Thanks for the trip into the "twilight zone".
Thinking of it that way I think you are likely right. But if I was the mother I would have put limits on the pink paint LOL!

That book you looked at as you entered, Foxe's Book of Martyrs is a good book. It was first published 500 years ago. it chronicles the deaths of those who sacrificed their lives for the gospel of Jesus Christ. FYI

I have been watching these for only a short while, but this is the best I have seen. I love exploring and photographing old buildings and this one would provide some great material. To think that there was a time when a young lady thought the world of those dresses, and loved her parents for painting her room pink. And then to think, it was not just one, but at least, three girls. Those old televisions were just lost in time, and especially the first one you saw in the bunk bed area which was also pink. Time takes on a whole new meaning in this house and you captured it essence perfectly. Thank you for sharing this!
I feel like I've just stepped back into "the Pink House of the 50s"! So much in one house. It's so sad to see a family's belongings (pictures especially) trashed - but - those clothes were in amazing condition - very weird!
Those pictures of the dead animals and birds were really revolting - hopefully there was a taxidermist living there *shudder*. So much 'stuff' - it would be interesting to see what is on those films and slides.

I find it funny when you say "you can get lost in here" and in that front porch room you didn't say anything about the old tv console used as a table cabnet but the tv was gone, it was the floor model. love your tours, be safe.
they were obviously quite a wealthy family considering the amount of electronics and other equipment just left there. especially considering theres a premium mid 1950's tv in every room. tv during that time were much more expensive
I don't think they were wealthy. The oldest son Gordon repaired TVs and probably got non-working TVs for free and then was able to get them working again.

Thank you Tiki, this tour was truly wonderful; it was the inside of a time capsule and after seeing everything shown; I can tell that there was a lot of love in the house...judging from the clothing and photo's; they didn't want to miss out on one moment of life or death.
They had to experience it all, through photos, TV, music and self expression it was clear to me; that they where a close family; unfortunately...families today don't share the same values...this is my favorite tour so far...thank you for all your hard work in filming it.

Thanks, Steve! I'm surprised we have not had any snow since all that rain that melted the last batch. They're calling for 30 percent chance tomorrow. It sure is cold enough to snow, though. Yeah, it's always helpful to find places that leave some evidence behind.

Daily I am always anxiously looking out for your uploads. So I was so happy to see this one. It hurts my heart to see family history, just left behind to be discarded. Like the photos, also find it so sad to see a piano in that condition.

Really enjoyed the video and so interesting.
Something that surprised me though was the calender on the wall with the poem ('Bless this house, Oh Lord we pray' one). When my partner and I bought our house and were exploring around we found a metal engraved plaq in the basement with the whole poem on it.
I really enjoyed that. I felt like I was there with you. It's so interesting to get a small look at another life in a different time. I have never had the opportunity to explore an old house like that and may never get the chance, so thank you so much for sharing that with me. What a great way to spend my lunch break!
This is the best of these type of videos I've seen. Usually these old houses are empty,,, now so happens I'm a record and old record player collector, also have an antique TV in my house from 1950... when you found the first record player my mouth dropped and by the 3rd I was like, OMG...! lol, thank you.. this was just awesome to watch!

I'm about half-way through this explore when beginning these comments. It would be interesting to know what happened for the family to leave all their things like this. The roof seems sound. The building could probably be restored. But, all those pictures, slides, reel-to-reel tapes, and, books! So sad to see these treasures abandoned. The overturned chair and noose were disturbing. This has to be one of the coolest houses for all the artifacts left behind-I think I would have had trouble ever leaving because I would have been checking out every book, every photo, every record, etc., etc. So sad that what's so terrifically important for us to covet and save for and buy today becomes tomorrow's "stuff," not worth keeping even if it's direct family history like the photos and the reel-to-reel tapes. It makes me wonder what we can do that will really keep us alive in people's hearts when we're gone since it certainly isn't our "leftovers." You're sure doing something by spending your time and effort to document these places and then giving this work to a bunch of strangers out in cyberspace. You certainly will be remembered and appreciated by a lot of us-you're one of the gifts for which we're thankful!

If I lived closer, I'd probably be in there every day off-camera (for ease of "snooping" lol) as it would probably take multiple days to go through everything. Wow Tiki a truly amazing find! At the beginning of the video from the outside looked much smaller than it actually was loved all the old TV's I have an old TV similar to the one at 28:15 mine is a Zenith from 1956. Nice job with the research it's not often when we can do that. Outstanding Job on this one! Thanks so much for sharing!

This video is wonderful! It is authentic and everything is actually old. So many videos of this type show a house with dates from 2012 and peeling paint like its been abandoned for decades. Just doesn't ring true to me. This one is REAL. Great find and I love the way you narrate. It makes everything so much more interesting. Good job!

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. Sad but that is the way our possessions end up for many of us. I bought a home built in 1988 and the woman that lived there died of cancer but had been successful working at Shell Oil here in Houston. She apparently had not ever been married or had children. The family took valuables but left her diplomas on the wall, so many photos, etc. I bought house and contents because no one wanted to hire it cleaned out. I got $1800 for all the stuff and that's after paying to have it cleaned out. So sad but true.

Finally was able to view this all the way. A couple of other times when I was in the middle of it, lost Internet connection and after it came back, this exploration was gone. This was a most interesting find and the history you gave added to it. Almost cried seeing that old piano destroyed. Had an old upright as a kid up until 1973 when I was 25 years old. Always loved the piano and hate seeing old ones torn apart. Really enjoyed this as it's another great job, as usual!

I just stumbled upon your abandoned houses videos and enjoy them very much. They remind me of when I was in grade school, and me and my friends would enter and inspect some abandoned homes in our neighborhood. I remember one old Victorian house had lots of cool stuff in it. This was in 1960. The people that had lived in the house were in there 70s, as I found many WWII ration booklets with their names and dates of birth, etc. I still have the old news papers, magazines (all headline issues of major news events, like the Hindenburg disaster, etc.) that I took. Plus, I found a brass pin back 1864 daguerreotype "Lincoln For President" campaign button which I still have to this day. Even at my age now I still like this kind of stuff (rummaging around in an abandoned house) -- or at least watching videos of it!

Thank you for another great find! I haven't been on youtube lately. My Mother was down from Missouri visiting for Thanksgiving :) It breaks my heart that so much was left in this house. nice video. i was shocked to see a noose on the ceiling and a knocked over chair beneath it. looks like someone commited suicide in that house that is why it is abandoned. suicidal memories are disturbing.
Also underneath the noose appears to be a black circular stain on the floor...possible leakage of a body not found immediately.
I.C. Wiener 😯 I'm going back to notice things I didn't see. I really think that's not a joke. It explains why people would leave not just pictures but so many antiques. There's many left behind at other places too but just think about the trouble you'd have to go through to do that for something someone may not even see. All of it wouldn't make any sense.

I was so happy to see that you had uploaded! When I saw it was a 30 minute video I was over the moon. This place was so fascinating. My dad was a minister so I could just imagine those tapes had sermons and singing on them. :) My dad passed away almost 5 years ago. We have a huge assortment of cassette tapes, and 8mm video cassettes of him preaching as well as many others. It is so wonderful to be able to go back and listen to them. It makes me sad to think that family members would have left such a treasure.

You scare me sometimes! Your so brave! Man big strong men who do these types of videos are not as brave as you are with some of the homes and rooms you tippy toe into. :) Do you have a facebook page or another fan site? Wow, it's unbelievable how much stuff is in that house. It looks like the house was left with a large portion of the belongings intact, and someone went through and trashed everything for no reason. Very interesting tour,and it must take a lot of patience to video everything. Enjoyed it!

That one I would of loved to Explore! That paint reminded me of the nightmare kitchen I had once, I bought light pink paint, painted my kitchen and thought the paint was a little darker pink then I wanted! Oh heck no! My kitchen turned out to be Pepto Bismal Pink!!!! I landed up getting so many compliments about it! Noe I have it the pink I wanted all along, very light pink! But great house, great video!
I always appreciate going exploring with you. One of the most important things I'm learning is that I don't need to be a hoarder. All this stuff left behind after death. Terrible situation.

From looking at the various rooms and what was in those rooms looks like a family must have lived there you can imagine the many Christmases, birthdays and other occasions that have been there over the years.
Clearly, music was a feature of there lives with the number of record players, records, cassette tapes and even reel to reel tape certainly a step back through musical time in these formats, yes, I think you are correct must have been a few girls there (pink) rules ...
Just so sad that previous visitors have trashed a family's memories and belongings ... I wonder if they came home and found there property smashed and throne all over just imagine there rage but its o.k. to do it to some one else's.
Its good to see that anything you touch you take real care to place where you found it from, shows thought and caring for other people's property.
