Went solo from Gibraltar to Magadan in Russia on a KTM 690 Rally and agree with everything you say 🙂
Only thing I would add is to have online backup / photo / paper copy of all your docs, someone to send you stuff to wherever you are, an emergency plan / device / contact even in remote european areas if you travel alone, water filter, medical kit, strong travel insurance and a secondary navigation device. And go light !!!
And one final advice. Go now... dont wait. You or your bike or the circumstance will never be 100% perfect. Just go !!!! You will return as a changed (wo)man.
    Ride safe

Travelling in Europe is definitely not a chore, I shipped my DR 650 from Australia to the UK in 2023 and spent a month in the UK the a month heading for Romania through France and Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, then Romania and back to Croatia where I left my bike in storage.
I will be back in May 2024 to head the the IOM with no plan so far as which way to go, I have 3 weeks to get from Zagreb to the UK, no planned route, so via France along the Med and up through the guts or via Germany up to Norway and back down is the part I haven’t decided yet.
My main way of travel is to avoid toll ways and stick to back roads, allow plenty time for a change of destination, mainly due to weather, rainy days are just not fun, especially when camping.
If you live in Europe there is nothing to stop you from travelling, living in Australia is great, lots of riding to be had and sights to see but 90% of the country is desert and I am not a big fan . 😂😂😂😂
Definitely don’t over plan a trip just go with the flow.

I'm curious why you sent your bike over there rather than get one locally. Is it hard to buy and register one there, not being a citizen? Are bikes more expensive? Maybe yours is special to you?

    • @whitedrguy6503
      @whitedrguy6503 Před 3 měsíci +9

@@SoulpowerMSRS My DR is my baby, it was used as a courier bike for 6 years and has done a few trips in Australia so has been set up to suit me, no to mention it has done 300,000 Klms, so to say that is special would be an understatement, it is a bike I will never sell so to add touring around Europe is just another reason to keep it.
I would have preferred to have taken my 2005 DR 650 which has 500,000 klms but it is not registered, it is another bike that will never be sold, sadly registration costs in Australia are expensive so having 3 bikes and a car is around $2800 a year.
My DR is financially worth nothing, it is just has sentimental value, every time it is ridden it is special and I appreciate what the bike has been through, I rode it 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year and it never let me down.

That depends on where you come from, what your normal insurance covers and most important where you are travelling to. In addition what level of care and treatment you expect. €100 a year insurance isn't going to help if you need medivac and a brain surgeon in a lot of countries even inside the EU.

Now its no more excuses :-) Very nice video with the most important to remember. I love loose plans as well if you have a wide timeframe and/or are not too ambitious what to visit. If the time is more limited and there are some certain places to visit, you will have to make a stricter plan. But loose is a goal. Thanks a lot for your tip of the revolut card. I will look into that. To withdrawel some money to use in the non urban areas is also wise. I had to do that for the backroads of Portugal. To use in the small cafes around. And even some petrol stations. I was surprised by that. Have a nice riding season, Europe is calling 🙂

I'm coming to Sweden this summer (do a little bit of the TET) and you've inspired me to take the more loose 75/25 system you suggested.
I always take an extra day every 3 or 4 days for resting, laundry, bike maintenance and exploring the country I'm visiting but your approach leaves even more room for (unplanned) adventure.

I am a Swede, and have also been there, done that, many times. Except that i have no friends that want to go. They think 50 km round town is enough. Now i am beginning to loose the will to go, always traveling alone eventually takes the edge from it.

Thanks for sharing these insights. Great timing. I am actually going to leave southwards (from Hamburg) on my Africa Twin next week. Rough plan is to do three stages of the ACT Croatia and then get on a boat to Italy. I was not aware of the creation of My Maps, so I will start doing this tonight 🙂 Only downside, I will need to go on the highway to get there as time is limited, but I might change plans if it gets too bad.
