Few People Know This About DARK Green Lawns & Iron

- In this video, I introduce an experiment in my lawn to illustrate a point about dark green grass. Most of the time the darkest green lawns are only dark because of a high dose application of liquid chelated iron.
Iron is a nutrient that all grass types need; it is integral to the production of chlorophyll but usually lawns don't need a lot of it unless a soil test shows you are low or unless you are noticing the early signs of chlorosis, yellowing of the leaves.

There is nothing wrong with applying extra iron to a lawn to get it to a darker shade of green and I've even shown in past videos how it could be used to green up the grass even in the middle of winter.

Most liquid iron products will have this effect although most will have different potencies. The iron I used in February to green up my winter grass and in this video was Lawn Star's liquid iron but going forward I'll be using a different product that combines a less potent mix of Iron (6%) with some Nitrogen (7%) and sulfur which will collectively give the grass a more natural boost in sustainable color.

Before you go buying iron though I want to encourage you to focus on the health of your grass system before you start fussing with its color. Potassium is usually an under-applied nutrient to lawns and it is the most important nutrient for plant health.

I feel like lawn youtubers be selling us their lawn supplements to try to get our lawn to look as good as theirs but then behind the scenes, they're applying tons of liquid iron
Why
I think most CZcamsrs actually use CGI to make their lawns look absolutely perfect and green. The other thing I don’t like about a lot of lawn CZcamsrs is they have perfectly flat lawns with no trees, and most of their lawns are brand new. So they kill off the entire existing lawn and put down brand new seed which is genetically engineered to be dark green.

No problem, glad to help. Do an occasional soil test which are cheap and easy and you'll see when it's actually needed. Super important is get your soil pH and make sure it's moving to a better zone. That will help a lot in maintaining the best lawn possible.
@Turf Mechanic you said iron in our soils isn't plant available. That doesn't make sense ofcourse our root systems uptake iron. Why say that our grass can't absorb iron from the soil? Around 4 min mark

Reminds me of spraying round up on dormant Bermuda lawns with blue dye in the early spring back in OK. Several times I had neighbors ask if I was just painting it to make it look better. Yeah, because a blue lawn looks SO good:)

I sprayed garden rich brand liquid iron on my weeds yesterday. (I used 2x the grass recommended rate of concentrate to water. May have been too heavy but I tried ironite brand a couple weeks ago and it hardly did anything.)
Today I walked out and at least 65% of the wood sorrel ☘️ with the yellow flowers all over my lawn is all shriveled up! (The dandelions aren’t showing much damage so far and the ground ivy hasn’t seemed to respond at least not yet.)
It’s so nice to see! My hands and forearms are a little Crampy from doing it with a hand spray bottle 😄 I need to get a pump sprayer

Usually when I see grass that is turning lime green and when the leaf blades start yellowing, I usually attribute this to too much water and fungus like conditions starting, but I always consider the chlorophyl and normally find that it is Fungus. Gotta know your weather and what is happening with humidity and high dew points and that wetness on the grass that just makes it too prime for fungus. So, I guess what I'm trying to say, is that it's very difficult to tell if one has fungus or if its lack of Iron, but I'd guess one would know if they really haven't applied anything with Iron for a bit. I apply enough, can't help to see beautiful dark green grass more often than not..
Great video; off topic, but at the beginning of the video I noticed your paver stones on the side. Do you use string trimmer to clean up around them? tia
If you are talking about the paver stones the line the inside of my fence line then yes, I string trim right up to them just before I mow and then run the mower over to clean it up. Unfortunately I have a much bigger problem on the outside of the stones where grass and weeds grow up on the top of my stone retaining wall and form something like a hedge on the outside of the fence. To clean that up requires a lot more work, something I don't have the time to deal with. I thought about spraying some kind of vegetation killer on it before it all started growing back in March, April, and early May but I didn't so now it looks terrible. With the baby and 4-year old at home with me I can't spend much time on the other side of the fence these days either doing weeding and trimming so I'm hopeful that I can make the other side of that fence a priority for next year when I only have a two year old at home with me most days.
Thanks for this info. Totally agree just a mask for other issues. I found out I have sod webworms. Turf easily comes up with just a pull and some dead area but overall lawn doesn’t look bad. Just wish it was discovered sooner. If you don’t mind answering a question- which one do you think will be more effective Dylox or talstar 0-0-7?

Hey Thurston, glad you found the video helpful. As for your question I'd have to look up active ingredients and do some digging on that - I'm still going through a big learning phase on insect control. I feel like I know a lot about grub control but the other insects I haven't done enough research to give you an answer that I could stand behind. In the future hopefully this is an area I'll be able to advise on but for now; I'm not trustworthy enough, lol.

Im kind of confused I'm not a lawn expert but I live in Texas and I used vigoro 72hour green in my new bermuda lawn it is on 2years old but I'm about to try ironite for tha first time cause it gets green but when I cut It I keep on 2inches:cause of tha heat so I hope ironite just make it look a little darker like a carpet because I think my lawn is a lil light green every time I cut it and I hope it helps me also not water my lawn alot cause I don't have a sprinkle system I used manually
I've found that all excessive fertilizing does is make it grow grow grow....too much.
Not that anybody asked me...but...😁...I apply iron once or twice per growing season as well as spot treatments and the occasional experiment.

Kind off topic. But I lines with summer stress and Iron. I know hyderetain is a popular product, but how does it compare to a product like revive? I don't see much testing of revive, curious if it's a product that actually helps with heat stress, and improves soil structure like it claims
This is a new product to me, I was only introduced to it a week ago, maybe less. From minimal glancing at their product and website I get the vibe that it's similar to a liquid aeration product - wetting agent / penetration. On their site they say "processed plant byproducts, organic and decomposition extracts and fulvo-humates" to me that sounds similar to humic/fulvic acid or compost tea. It probably gets some extra fert in there from the poultry waste. I would have to learn more to say anything definitively but honestly a humic acid and broad spectrum organic fert would *probably* perform similarly. Hydretain is actually a moisture manager helping to prevent evaporation (that's how I think of it at least), if you use that and fertilize regularly with a good nitrogen-potassium ratio and make sure you apply bio-stimulants that promote stronger and deeper rooting that will help a lot going into your summer next season for heat tolerance.
Please update us on how it looks after day or two. Can't shake the dark green warm fuzzies. LoL

I think sometimes when iron could be needed is do to an alkaline soil, like PHs 7.5 and up. At that point there’s really not much iron the roots could use if any. In that case some people could experience a frequent iron deficiency and could benefit from foliar iron applications. However, I do agree that it’s all visual! I think it’s best to start with nitrogen and if you get the green you want then no need to change things up.
I agree withis video. Iron is essential. most prople overlook micronutrients. I'm one of them, big-time. I have bad chlorsis from over excessive use of urea. Now my grass looks sickly. I'm taking the approach this year of using micro nutrients and only using macronutrients when the grass looks thin or week. What do you think? A more balanced approach with less emphasis on nitrogen.
The first thing you should do is a soil test. The results will show exactly what deficiencies that your lawn has and what nutrients that it needs, then go from there.
Was wondering if you ever use triple 13 on your lawn or if you recommended it. I realize what to use exactly requires a test to see where you’re at but it seems a balanced fert would be the best option unless there are deficiencies or excesses. I’ve used it for flower and veggie gardens but never used on my lawn as it seems everything recommended or sold at stores for lawns has a large variation in the numbers.
I think balance ferts are great if you haven't used fertilizer at all in a long time. I would follow-up a balance fert later in the season with something more nitrogen heavy though as a lot of excess phosphorus and potassium will stay in the soil longer than the nitrogen in the 13-13-13. Don't apply a ton of it now either, it's still hot everywhere and you don't want to push too much growth until summer temps dip a bit.

I think I made a mistake and put granular iron onto my lawn in way too large of a amount in just a few locations. Mainly because I just tossed it onto it. In those areas it has turned extremely brown and maybe even dead. I have mostly Bermuda grass in Las Vegas Nevada and of course right now it is the month of June. I have been watering it heavy but it does not seem to want to come back. What do I do? I want to convert to RTF fescue. Will this stop me from being able to do so? Help! Thank you for your videos.
I don’t think it would, usually when a plant dies to to an overdose of iron it’ll turn a black color. However it could be a pretty heavy area of where the granular iron oxidized and created a bunch of rust in that area. I would think the Bermuda would bounce back in no time. As for the conversion I’m not sure, but make sure you have great plan when it comes to eliminating the Bermuda. Glyphosate+fusillade is normally a great combination.
I know this is 2yrs old.. what about liquid vs granular for moss 'killing'? or prevention.
Go with FeHEDTA, it's a special iron that doesn't affect the grass but will damage many weeds and kill moss. I've never had enough moss in my lawns to make a demo video on this topic but it works. Search Amazon for FeHEDTA and buy a concentrate so you can get the best bang for your buck.
Great inside on Iron. I had not really achieved any significant darkening with iron, only very early or late in growing season. This is the second video "debunking" the iron "myth" out this week. Other one was from Elevated Lawnscapes, he approached it from the pH side of plant health. Your video and his is like a one two punch on plant health and color relation.
Ohh yeah, I gotta watch that one. You are right, I didn't touch on it at all. High pH in the soil makes it's availability really low, foliar apps help a lot when soil pH is high, that's also why chlorosis happens a little bit more frequently in high pH soils. I don’t know about cold season grasses. But my Bermuda absolutely benefits from the liquid iron I put down every 3 weeks. Yes it’s a very dark emerald green color but the sulfur in the iron formula does an excellent job in preventing fungus. Haven’t had an issues at all with any fungus. Been over 5 years and I’ve never even had to deal with any fungus. Light spoon fed doses of Organic fertilizer every 2 weeks and liquid iron every 3 weeks is all it gets with plenty of water and it’s never stressed or deficient in nutrients. But that’s what works for my yard.
Hi. I have Bermuda grass and a lawn chemicals company, but I bought a bottle of chelated iron for spraying on my hibiscus which was having yellow leaves. That only took a little bit, so I was wondering about using it on my lawn instead of just storing this big bottle? I have a battery operated sprayer. What do you think?

@@WalkingbytheSpiritAlways ok now that makes sense lol . And yes you can use it on your lawn . I use it every 3-4 weeks but apply in the evening and water it in the next morning so it doesn't burn the grass . Unless I have Mologanite .
Great info. Just curious, I notice quick edits between almost every sentence while you’re speaking. Are you just cutting out the tiny spaces in between? It doesn’t seem like much time is skipped. I feel like it turns it into a steady stream, not as natural & no little breaks. Not trying to be rude, just curious.
Thanks Mark, to answer your question I pull out gaps in my thought process or anytime a stumble in my words. I've recorded 250 videos or so but I'm a painfully slow talker in real life and it can be even slower when I slow down to think through my words carefully; over the last year and a half making videos I'm still limited in my fluidity in speaking. To speed things up a bit for the viewer I've settled into just talking as best as I can and pulling out gaps, stumbles, and moments of thought in editing. Slows me down in producing the videos but it makes them easier to listen to...although I'm sure some people don't like the format. Can't please everyone unfortunately. I see a noticeable difference in audience retention when I do this compared to when I don't do it so until I actually get better at talking I'll probably keep editing them this way. BTW, no offence taken at all. :)

Can you add too much Iron..?..Liquid or granular ?
Not realy.I have put 350 g 99% pure FeSO4 per 2000 sq.f. in 8 l of watter against moss.No worries at all.Gave enough time to grass to fill the spots where moss used to be.I will repeat this in the fall in some other mossy areas in my lawn. In the UK they use it even heavier.
Yeah you can, the more you add or if you add too frequently the darkening effect of the green will start looking weirdly dark, as the green shades start pushing towards black or at least the dark undesirable shades. I almost always put small doses down of everything I do - I use a lot of products but I'm always conservative with my applications.

Lot of people talk about dark green grass but I've seen it and I don't like it. I think the lime green or maybe slightly darker than lime green actually looks better than dark green. That said, I don't know what you proved in this video, if anything.. You do or don't need iron, maybe you need potassium or maybe you don't, but I think you did imply that liquid iron is faster than granulated. And just because it's green it doesn't mean it's healthy. But I guess It all depends on what healthy means to you.. But I do think I like the comment on using Micronutrient booster.
Where is the end result after a few days?
This is one where the pattern wasn't as obvious as I had hoped, mostly likely I went a little too light on the application, I could see the pattern with my eye for about a week but couldn't ever get it to show on camera and then it all blended back in to the rest of the lawn color before Sept. One of my struggles apparently is going too light on my apps even when I'm trying to go heavy apparently. In 2022 I'd like to do a similar demonstration but make it far more obvious, im thinking strips in the lawn with different iron concentrations, well see how it goes.
Or if you are my neighbor just add some dye with the Iron and watch it all run down the street after watering or a heavy rain. Cheaters

Great info as usual. A little constructive criticism, loosen up on the tight editing. I know you're trying to make smooth sentences but it's noticeable and a bit distracting. It's OK to have a few "um"'s and pauses in there. Writing a loose script ahead of time and more cutaway's will help. Love the channel!

You can't make assumptions on whether or not if other people's lawns are healthy just because it's dark green, without testing their soil and knowing exactly what they're doing to it. You cannot speak for, nor analyze the conditions of nobody else's lawn and its appearance, but your own.

In hindsight I didn't push enough iron, ive got ideas for a better experiment this year where I use increasingly heavier doses of iron on a lawn space to see the differences between application rates.
