Can you do the same with a couple of 1/2 in drive sockets sized appropriately and coupled back-to-back with a piece of 1/2 in square steel bar stock?
Try wrapping the square ends using a tape so the sockets will fit tight on to the square. Else that small play on the connecting points can make some deviation. Also double check with eyes if its perfectly centered taking 3 or 4 reference points.

Yup its heavy. i had a help supporting the gearbox from top. its like 20 25 kg.
Those gearboxes are heavy but with a garage jack, axelstands and a companion you can do it
