@Dave on somethings maybe but for sure not in economic power deploying digital systems can happen fast but building physical infrastructure and grow companies takes time
@Dave And the advantage of being those who are ahead, i.e., the western world with its educational system, infrastructure, and tech, is that we can help those who are behind us to catch up and, yes, possibly even, surpass us. It's a mutually beneficial relationship, which will become even more so when those who are behind are caught up to us, because a level playing field is the best playing field.
I love the idea of this for elections. 1 digital ID = 1 vote.

As long as it is not required, because there is an obvious bias towards people that can afford tech.. unless of course you are open to subsidizing tech for those that don't have it.. but seeing as "voter ID" tends to be more of a conservative topic, I'm guessing you wouldn't be too hype on that idea.

Yes, could be used for voting, but would not solve all possible problems that could come with voting in general. Like you would still trust the government to validate real people only, and to de-validate then when they pass away. Atala is basically a digital alternative to the classical standard with some new options (more detailed control over shared data).

but what if the phone got broken or stop working? what steps to do on a new phone to regain access to the personal id's/informations/documents?
I assume you would just need to re enter the seed phrase that you used to set up your account, kind of like a crypto wallet.
I imagine it works like a cryptowallet.. the phone is just the browser that connects to your account. The account itself is secure on the blockchain. You can just accès it through another device. They probably also have some extensive security steps you have to go through on your phone to access the space, so it's not sensitive to theft.
They mentioned biometrics being captured - should be enough, coupled with a seed phrase or password to regain the DID
It works just like a wallet with keys and everything. You can download the app to see for yourself.

ROLL IT OUT FOR THE SPOs! It would be a good test case before broader roll out, and the pool splitting issue can be somewhat mitigated if the number of pools are limited per digital ID (coupled with the biometrics).
This is a great idea. Hadn’t considered that one. We could put a limit on the number of pools a digital ID could have associated with it. Good thinking.

It's also connected to your passport and biometrics no? But losing the code is probably not such a good idea...
your ID is still within your country, the government has al your biometric data so I would assume that the process for those who lost the access to his Atala wallet is just the same as if you lost your ID/passport

These veryfications need nodes to run them, those people get paid in ada. The more people you have using the network, the more valuable it will grow
You think all of these services are done free of charge? They will probably all have to hold and spend ADA to do this, which means more people buying it, which means supply goes down, which means price goes up.
Interestingly enough, Charles indicated the Ethiopian deal would actually cost his company money. So he's basically doing the deal at a loss for several millions of dollars- at least for now.

I'm getting dystopian vibes from this, ngl. And why did it have to get the same name as the NSA spying project? I really don't like the "one identity" thing, it scares me.
Why? The only one who has access to the ID is you. It's decentralized so there is no intervention from a 3rth party like a goverment or bank.
Had the same thought about 'prism'. Bad choice of name for sure. Also found weird the thought of 'Africa becoming the new China', 'monitoring the intellect, knowledge and performance of the students', and that being carried into their economic lives, like a permanent record that determins their worthiness. Health data would be captured as well. Well the parallel to China is how data driven they have become. If a central authority requires credentials for you to do something, what use is it that those credentials are on a decentralised network? This seems like decentralization that favours the institution and not the individual. Decentralization is not a silver bullet when there is repressive policy. This is anti libertarian and appealing to the state to achieve mass adoption but the state will want certain concessions to be made so that it can retain it's power or it will just create it's own centralised version of the system.
@@nemac23 The credentials are owned solely by the individual (increasing social mobility, transparency, cost effectiveness, time efficiency and therefore productivity), the only relationship they will have with other parties like the government is verification. If decentralisation favours one party more than the other then it's not decentralisation; you have completely screwed the definition and implications of decentralisation, once the people are fully integrated into a decentralised system which they prosper in, it will be a grave challenge to convince them to migrate to a centralised one.
