  • What is psychosomatic Illness? Is it the same as saying the illness is 'all in the mind'? How should we approach psychosomatic illness? In this interview with Dr Katrien Devolder (Philosophy, Oxford), Professor Richard Holton (Philosophy, Cambridge) discusses these and other questions regarding psychosomatic illness.

I've had a limp and leg spasms for more than 4 years and it's been getting worse. traumatologysts sent me to physical therapy, pyhisiotherapists sent me to neurologists, neurologists sent me to a psychiatrist. these illnesses are very hard for me to understand and very life-dampening. i wish there was more knowledge about how these disorders work. i just pray for more patience.

I agree with his definition of psychosomatic illness only. How he describes the disorder invalidates the extent of the illness and blames the patient.

I came here because I'm feeling feverish, have a headache and slight nausea after talking to a neighbor, he was 30 feet away in his truck so I dont think I could get coronavirus or a flu from standing 30 feet away.
So I'm thinking it must all in my head?
I got groceries yesterday but I'm very safe with everything. I even cut open packages and dump food into seperate containers without touching package itself and throw packages away. I wash my hands afterwords and dozens of times a day and my face.
I did touch a birdhouse yesterday I lifted up the top of it to check inside and there was a dead bird in the bird house. Hmm?
Maybe I've got the bird flu? It that possible.
I washed my hands very good after touching it though.
Also, I havent had any contact with anyone for months.
Sometimes I feel sick but by the middle of the day I feel better. But touching that bird house is making me think I caught something?
Maybe it's all in my head?

Is psychosomatic the same as psychogenic illness? I've just been diagnosed with psychogenic tremor. I'm shaking and I have problems with preforming some physical tasks. I also have inner tremors. So this is obviously a very physical thing. The neurologist saw my tremors and acknowledged them as pretty severe on a tremor scale, but psychogenic tremors was what he wrote. Is it just a common term for all things doctors are unable to understand?

I fell sick to some viral illness 2 weeks ago to this date. It started on a Thursday I got light headed and felt a bit dizzy or numb couldn't feel myself walking and the breeze on my arms felt different. I thought I was dehydrated so I guzzled a bottle of water and felt fine the rest of the day. Went home and proceeded to book a hotel trip to a water park for the last weekend before school. Next morning I woke up with a runny nose and work sent me home to get tested for covid. Irresponsibly I did not go get tested for covid instead I packed for the vacation and we left at like 7 p.m. that night. I could not sleep all night and when we got out of bed Saturday morning I had congestion in my ears and nose and some body aches. I made it through the day had a blast went to sleep fine. Woke up Sunday morning no more congestion in my ears but congestion in my nose dripping down my throat and when I cough. I had phlegm throughout the day. Got back home and Monday morning called out sick because I had a dry cough that I could not hide. Try to set an appointment to get tested for covid early as the appointment was Tuesday 6 p.m. got tested for covid came back negative for seated to go to work for Wednesday. Throughout when I picked up the sickness till about 9 days after I have been feeling out of body kind of trippy and delusional Maybe like when I approached the elevator area when elevators would turn on I felt like I was already in the elevator like the ground was moving. I also have these effects near water. So just recently probably this past Sunday I came to realize I can smell way better, my standing on it and fatigue has gotten better, I can hold my breath under the water longer we're having a blast at the pool just the other day, I also feel a bit stronger I was able to lift my daughter clear above my head and watch her about three feet over my head. And the freakiest thing is I went from having mostly premature ejaculation to now having 3 days with five 30-plus minute sessions and I cannot ejaculate. What the hell is going on? I mean I'm not really complaining lol I feel the greatest I've ever felt and the sex is amazing lol. If this is permanent I feel blessed. Did my body reset and overfix after fighting to recover from this illness? I also did not take any medication to recover. I just played in the sun, sweat a ton working and didn't really sleep that much to fight it. Ate normal and never lost taste or smell.

Doctors have to be very careful when bringing the patient as a source of pathology into any illness. I worked as a health insurance agent and almost 100% patients indicate that they have a condition and the doctors and treatment should take care of it. I had to be thoughtful in suggesting that their lifestyle and actions contributed or even responsible for their health problems. Few people I know want to be accountable and responsible in their lives. I can’t imagine being a doctor and have to bite my tongue knowing that the patient’s actions or lack thereof are the main reason for the patient’s suffering. We live in a modern era where instant gratifications and resolutions are a push button and payment away. Psychosomatic illnesses are definitely actualized by and individuals thoughts that affect neurotransmitters release/uptake and other chemical interactions in the body, often exacerbated by agitated mental states that flood the body with adrenaline that cause changes in cardiovascular response. Sayin that it’s just all in your head requires further explanation because most people know about less than 1% of what goes on in their head. Education is key and trying to convince an adult to learn about their own body can be impossible.

David, Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing anxiety-stress. For a relaxed life without anxiety-stress sit on a chair, back erect, hands on lap with palms upwards, eyes closed, be still and observe your natural incoming--outgoing breath for around 10-15 minutes. Be as still as possible. Many thoughts will come which is ok--slowly negative thoughts will reduce and your mind will relax. During your daily activity keep observing your breath consciously. Best part is mood swings also reduce. Do the above meditation daily to feel relaxed. For more relaxation enter the following on google search and listen before sleep repeating the affirmations in your mind. -“52Hz affirmations for health and healing you tube”. Best wishes. Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

@@Standing_on_the_word I do have one technique that works most of the time to temporarily relieve most symptoms. I get into a meditative state and tell myself that I do not have the symptom, as if it were already true. This works surprisingly well, but for me, a different symptom will soon take the place of the one that stopped. It is nice to be able to change up, even if that wasn't my real intention. There are a couple other ways, but they sound even dumber than this one, at least until you try it and it works. Good luck friend.

All illnesses were psychosomatic ten thousand years ago when no one had a microscope or knew what the cause of illness was. Psychosomatic is what doctors say when they don't know what the cause of an illness is. That does not mean that there is a perfectly good cause. Cause just like 10000 years ago, there were perfectly good causes for all kinds of illnesses. But no one could figure it out. So just because they can't figure out what's causing an illness does not make it psychosomatic, i'm sorry. It's an excuse. Psychosomatic illness is an excuse for those who cannot figure out what is causing the owners. It's a blame the victim mentality. Because you can't figure out what's wrong with a person call it psychosematic & claim there is no cause. Had everyone done this 10000 years ago. We would have never found out what causes disease. Ever. At all
