  • Find out why you don't want to buy United Airlines miles due to the dollar value of the points being deflated at flight checkout as well as when purchasing MileagePlus miles directly.

    Tony, you are super awesome! Sending you lots of blessings to your health and overall wellbeing! I even got the Andy Cantu Lux travel hacks but found it a bit confusing after the whole course, which I can share with you. Your simple math and explanation are wonderful! Thank you for what you do!

    Sometimes this could be bad advice for your same scenario: if and only if you fly very infrequently with United (less than 1x per year or so; same logic applies to whatever airline), it may well be worth 'buying' miles at checkout. And that's because the value comp. is that you either get nothing for that balance of miles you have OR you get something AND that total out-of-pocket cost is lower for the same flight. Since the value of miles is nearly always depreciating, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly, using miles in a timely fashion is important even if for most airlines miles no longer expire. And this doesn't consider the price per mile of more premium seats.

    I am very glad to find your video before I purchased any miles. However, is it better to buy miles for international flights? Let me know if you have suggestions, please.

    Is it really 15,000 miles to fly from San Fran to Chicago? I Googled it and it says 2,129. Is a mile not really a mile-mile, but some other kind of mile?

    Do you know how to calculate PQPs from flying on United’s partner airlines?

    What about the special incentives they send to mileage plus customers? Such as buying monthly or like discounted miles. Is it still not worth it?

      My gut says probably not, but honestly I'm not familiar with these promotions. Do you have anything such as a link to share with details of the offers?

    Not always bad to buy miles. In my case buying miles is cheap than buying with cash. See breakdown below
    Flight to cancun - $658 or 46,400miles
    Tax - $91.81
    My miles - 44,760miles (assuming each mile is worth $0.01)
    Extra Miles needed w/ price - 1,640miles @ $79.55
    Miles + tax + extra miles = 44,760 miles ($447.60) + $91.81 + $79.55 = $618.96

      @@ThriftyTony that is where the problem is depends on how you earn 44760 miles. If you purchased them using discount still it costs you $0.03 and not $0.01

    United is currently offering 175,000 miles for 3062.50 or 1.75 cents per mile. Is that still too expensive? Or is it a good deal? Thank you

    • @ThriftyTony
      @ThriftyTony  Před rokem

      Not a good deal. The value of a mile is closer to a cent

    I didn't have enough miles to purchase a one way airfare. It cost $300. It was going to cost me over $300 to get the miles I needed to complete to get my free trip.. ummm no. I paid for the trip myself and not purchase any miles
