      He wanted to get Arthur's Muggle Protection Act scrapped since if Harry hadn't found out about the diary Horcrux people would have thought Ginny was evil and killing Muggle borns for kicks rather than being possessed by part of Voldemort's soul. It would have ruined Arthur's reputation of fighting for Muggle rights. Ik it’s cheesy but through your he last few movies/books he kind of shows it a little more he just seems like he wants to live a normal life with his son and wife. Dearest Tom,
    Draco has said first three-word term today. It was, “Filthy Little Mudblood”. And I agree wholeheartedly. So I said to Narcissa, “Indeed.” She is as excited as me. I hope that he will follow in my footsteps when he grows. Draco has also kicked Dobby. Narcissa thinks that he was overexcited. But I expect it’s because my son knows his priorities well, even at such a tender age. Draco also laughed when Dobby was about to say something, then started ironing his ears. The only thing I do not like is that Draco got his food into my hair- and I had just gelled it!
    I will see you later, hopefully with updates about my tresses.

      As for the OPs comment, no. He joined Voldemort because he was pureblood, shared their fantasies and disdain for Muggles, loved the Dark Arts, and wanted Voldemort to win. He quickly became part of the inner circle. Only as he fell from grace to a servant, and saw his son punished, is when he understands the value of his family. Take Bellatrix, whose love for Voldemort is limitless that she's willing to endanger her nephew. Lucius isn't that loyal, as he sees a future with Voldemort in charge may not be what he wants. He became as weak as the prey the Death Eaters hunted.

    I think you guys missed something major about Lucius giving Ginny the diary... in Chapter 18, when Dumbledore is talking to Lucius, he says "Imagine the effect on Arthur Weasley and his Muggle Protection Act, if his own daughter was discovered attacking and killing Muggle-borns..." I think this is the main reason that Lucius gives the diary to Ginny specifically, and it also explains the timing of him doing so.

      Yes the timing is because as Lucius stated in Borgan and Burks is that is are now rumors of a new "Muggle Protection Act" in process which is why he is there to sell off dark artifacts in the first place. So yes his plan wasn't to attack Harry but in definitely disgrace Arthur Weasly to prevent any further muggle protection legislation and possible get the original legislation repealed, and possibly kill a Muggle born or two in the process. Since actually ridding the school of Muggle borns isn't really feasible in the first place. Since it may have been feasible back when Salazar Slytherin was alive but as Lord Voldemort Discovered when he was at Hogwarts, the school would quickly be shut down after only a few attacks/deaths occured students would likly be moved on to a new magical school somewhere else and Hogwarts castle would quickly become abandoned.

    You seemed to have skipped an important part: At the time Arthur Weasley was conducting raids on wizards' homes to find items intended to target muggles, though sometimes finding other illegal stuff. Lucius was afraid they'd eventually get to him, so he decided to get rid of this suspicious and incriminating diary and who better to give it to than the daughter of the guy leading the raids. If she gets caught it would hurt Arthur's reputation and maybe put a stop to the raids.

    Definitely disagree. Why would someone so proud like Lucius even bow to a half-blood? a) Because he believed that they'll get rid of mudbloods and b) because he was threatened. The choice was to join Voldemort's army or to be killed. Lucius was in his mid-twenties, just married, waiting for his heir to be born - of course he joined the Deatheaters. Look at the very end of the second Battle of Hogwarts - he was wandless, not fighting but desperately looking for Draco. I bet he was so disappointed at himself knowing that Draco would need to carry his faults. I'd never call Lucius a coward. Even J.K. admitted that the Malfoys loved each other, despite the cold and heartless image they have.

I thought that’s why he changed his name, so his real name would remain secret. (Well, his few school chums would know.) Anyway blood purity was a big deal among his followers.
      I agree with your point about family. He might have joined the Deatheaters to save his family in order to be on what he thought was the winning side. But I think his racism was for real.
      I always thought that as a Deatheater he killed Muggles. To me, that’s how he was a coward, killing people weaker than him. Did he really mind killing muggles and probably vulnerable people in the wizarding world? It’s another one of those things we’ll probably never know.
      Who knows if he ever had the option to take his family into hiding to avoid joining. As someone who liked to keep and gain more power, he’d never choose that.

    Also given his pompous and self serving nature, one wonders if he wanted his dark lord's return at all. with his position within the ministry, he may have been angling for an eventual turn as the top minister. Both Harry and Dumbledore refusing to believe he was truly reformed would be problematic if they were to speak out, but if Lucius could disgrace and/or kill them without it pointing back to him...... Kill would be even better as he could fake a couple impassioned speeches calling for justice and advance his carrier.

      He didn’t know what it was just that it was a powerful artifact that his master needed him to keep safe to possibly be put to use at some later point. Voldemort kept his horcrux’s secrete from everyone so no one would even know to look for them. Dumbledore even states Voldemort is likely to have been very displeased to find that Lucious had lost the diary and done so in such a public and self serving way not even a way to do anything to benefit Voldemort whom he should have still be fully serving and searching for in all he did. His self serving part of the act and reason for using it when and on whom he did was because Arthur was working to put for the Muggle Protection Act which included the ability for them to search/raid homes and things for any dark or dangerous items. Lucious disliked the bill in full but was genuinely concerned about the possibility of a search on his manor. He could could place this item on Jenny in the hope it would bring shame to Arthur’s family as a whole and stop the bill in its tracks but at the very least even if it did nothing at all he got rid of something he believed was extremely dark and dangerous considering it was given to him by Voldemort.
      Also Lucious didn’t work at the ministry his only placement or connections there are his name and family and constant donations to key people and departments to benefits himself and his family in different ways. He’s actually a governor for Hogwarts until later in the series when he loose that position and his standing in lot of other places in society his “fall from grace” happens in stages almost as the dark lords comes back more and more he looses more and more until he’s the sad broken man in DH who just wants to find his son and get away from

    WHAT IF Lucius wrote in the diary trying to communicate with Voldemort and it *told* him to send the diary to Hogwarts?
    Maybe Lucius told Tom how Harry defeated him and is now a second year Gryffindor student, and Tom decided he needed to get rid of Harry, even at the cost of losing protection. So he came up with the plan to open the Chamber of Secrets to eliminate Harry.
    That would explain why Lucius gave away a dark magical object from Voldemort himself to the biggest family of blood traitors he knew. He was actually obeying his orders.
    Also, I really want to know what Harry would have been like as a Dark Lord rival to Voldemort.

      I think it'S pretty much already explained: Lucius got nervous with the increased raids Arthur and the ministry did at the houses of even well known influential magician. He was kind of lucky that the first time they searched his property they didn't find anything, but after that he tried to get rid of not only the diary but quite a lot of his dark magical stuff. Thinking the Dark Lord was dead and would not return (which seems to have been the case for Lucius, because it was later shown that much of what he did was not in the interest of Voldemort - like getting rid of the diary, like trying to make Draco befriend Harry, like denying any allegiance to voldemort and not searching for him etc.) there was no more reason to hold on to the diary, since he didn'T really know what it was, but risking it being found by the ministry could have been disastrous.
      He choses to give it to ginny in order to get back at Arthur specifically who was the reason for Lucius' trouble, and because she being all naive and unprotected in the bookstore was a bit of an opportunity for him to use. I don't think he planned to run into the Weasleys here, but when he met them he saw the oportunity. The main objective I think was to get it to hogwarts by whatever means necessary because at least he seems to have known that it might open the chamber of secrets. The chamber was never opened to eliminate Harry. That was never Lucius goal. Back than Lucius even still somewhat hoped that Harry would turn out to be a powerful dark wizard and 'next Dark Lord'. He wanted to open the chamber primarily to get rid of muggleborn and more importantly dumbledore. Kicking dumbledore out of the school was his main objective all throughout book two. I doubt he did that for Voldemort, it just seems like (and we can see hints of that in the first book already) that Lucius just did not like Dumbledore and didn'T aprove of the way he lead Hogwarts.
      Tom himself said that he only got interested in Harry and found out about him later on, when Ginny couldn't stop fawning all over him in the diary. That's when he changed his objective from 'killing mudbloods' to 'getting to know and killing Harry Potter'.
      Voldemort was later reasonably mad at Lucius for just giving away the diary and risking it's destruction.

One would think that once it had been confirmed, he’d at least be allowed to do magic again and get a new wand. I know the theory is Dumbledore fixed it with the Elder Wand, but the Ministry doesn’t know that. That’s beside the point.

    I disagree, how can people think that Lucius is the worst death eater?! Lucius garnered the interest of Voldermort, I presume, right after leaving Hogwarts, being invited to the death eater circle and he had to be, at least an above average student to be in the slug club. He served in both wizarding wars, contributing more in the first than the second. I believe he might have been Voldemort's second/third in command in the first wizarding war since he and Bellatrix were the only death eaters Voldemort entrusted with horcruxes; that alone should be enough proof that he was not the worst death eater ever. I agree he fell from grace after Voldemort's return...even so, he was the one chosen to lead the retrieval of the prophecy in the department of mysteries. After his failure in retrieving the prophecy he didn't do much. Then and only then, would I argue that he was the worst of Voldemort's inner circle...

    @khodexus4963 Před 6 lety +12

    You're missing a few big pieces of evidence, most notably, the Ministry raids Lucius was tipped off about. Discrediting Arthur Weasley was a major factor in his motivation of targetting Ginny, and also knowing he couldn't necessarily keep the diary safe through the school year due to the Ministry raids also forced the timing. I'm sure putting Harry in danger was a consideration, but it's highly unlikely to have been the primary motivating factor.
    He had also grown disillusioned with Voldemort over the years, and while he absolutely agreed with his pureblood supremacy views, I think he had grown distasteful of his methods, and would have much preferred a regime with someone else in charge. And yet he still feared Voldemort's power, and that is why he tried to serve him loyally when he was around, but perhaps that distaste was a large factor in why he wasn't very effective as a death eater. His heart wasn't fully in it.
    Also, also, Jason Isaac totally improvised the killing curse at the end of Chamber of Secrets, J.K. Rowling stated in an early interview that she very deliberately avoided showing any of the Malfoys successfully casting an unforgivable curse.

      This is what I was going to say!
      I was under the impression that Lucius gave Ginny the diary not out of careful planning, but because he had tried to sell it at Borgin and Burkes but they refused to buy it due to the amount of dark magic associated with it. Knowing that there were raids happening and that Mr. Weasley was attempting to have a raid done at the Malfoy Manor, he tried to get rid of the diary any way he could and saw an opportunity to plant it on a Weasley child without even knowing what the diary even was.

    • @lisac9522
      @lisac9522 Před 5 lety +1

      tatum That’s what assumed too. I doubt he knew what the diary did. He just knew 1. He wanted to get rid of it so it wouldn’t be found during a ministry raid, 2. He knew it was very dark so when the opportunity presented itself he planted it on a little girl in a family of blood traitors. Job done.
      I remember feeling disappointed that the fist fight between Lucius Malfoy and Arthur Weasley didn’t make it into the movie! Their families really were enemies.
