Another one of my favourite bands Greg! Great song off a great album. Sadly their original drummer, Gary Young, passed away in August of this year at the good old age of 70. He was older than the rest of them, and started out recording and producing some of their early singles, until he finally became a proper member of the band in 1989. He featured as the main drummer on their amazing 1st LP ‘Slanted & Enchanted’ and the follow on 4 track EP ‘Watery Domestic’. I’d implore you to listen to both, in particular the latter, as it has 4 sublime tracks. Where you can hear Gary’s drumming! I loved his style… he was a bit of a chaotic, shambling guy, who was know for his on stage antics between songs! Like handing food out to the audience, doing headstands ….I saw them play in London in 1992, where Gary assisted in the dismantling of a piano in between songs and was handing some of the piano keys out to the audience! But it was his drumming style that got me….always a bit off time and out of kilter with the rest of the song….almost a sloppy, laziness about his drumming…which made the songs sound amazing…totally suiting Pavements sound! So those first two records are very special! RIP Gary. As a taster, I’d recommend the last (4th) track off their Watery Domestic EP… called ‘Shoot the Singer(1 Sick Verse).

A few months ago, I got a suggestion for a group and album called Purple Mountains which I listened to and liked. David Berman was the front man, and I came to learn that years back he had worked with Steven Malkmus in a band called Silver Jews that I have also liked the three albums and EP that I've listened to. Anyway, this kind of atypical Pavement song more resembles a Silver Jews kind of song, and I agree with you about its offbeat beauty. Great upload.

And to give you a taste of them live from back in the day…. Amazing gig here from July 1992…this was filmed one month after I saw them play in London. You can see Gary in full flight! Must have been a very hot venue as at about 45 mins in they open the fire escape door to the right of the stage to let some air in … it opens straight out into the street….so those outside got to see the rest of the gig from the side of the stage!😂…czcams.com/video/drlJ6WxtqWA/video.htmlsi=Ejgr4rAlOoBvZJ2S

Going from memory, the lyric is, "(I) they don't have no function" so Stephen was including himself or pavement with the smashing pumpkins. It wasn't meant as disrespect to them. Something I suspect but have never read confirmation of, but if you watch the video of subterranean homesick blues by Bob Dylan, the word "pavement" is in the ding and on one of the cards and the word is similar to how the lettering is in how Pavement looks in some of the band's artwork

Just realised you never finished reading the last verse of the lyrics in your review of them, so that would explain the difficulty in getting what the controversy was about….that last verse had the reference to the Smashing Pumpkins and the STP’s!😅… of the Pumpkins the lyric suggests that ‘they don’t have no function, I don’t understand what they mean and I could really give a fuck’!
