  • Ian Barnett demonstrates how to make wooden gypsy flowers using a draw knife and coppiced hazel. He shows the different effects achieved by using green wood and dry wood at his workshop in Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre, West Sussex.

I'm from the Irish/Scottish Gypsy Traveller communities and the older generations of my family used to do this. Unfortunately the tradition didn't get passed down all to much so I'm very thankful for these videos. I plan on mastering the craft so it can continue on. As a child my great uncle sat outside the door of his trailer/caravan and made one for me. He did it his entire life so it only took him minutes.

I am reading Rabbit Stew and a penny or two! By Maggie Smith - Bendell. It's such an interesting book on the Life of the True Romany Gypsies. I would highly recommend it!

I think the reason they used Elder is that it turns bright orange when cut..

Not bad ,and not" having a go" but to be honest here a genuine Romany Gypsy/Traveller wouldn't be happy with the result from Dry Hazel or from using the drawknife. The best results come from using day/two day old Elder and a thin bladed Pegknife held flat against (almost) and at an angle/not 90 degrees to the wood, that way the furls curl over much better and become more Chrysanthemum like.
