  • Hi guys,
    We get asked all the time, where can I get a macaw? How much is a macaw? Would you recommend a macaw as a pet? And I always say, DO NOT GET A MACAW unless you've done your research.
    This video is part of your research, do NOT buy a macaw until you have seen this video! We discuss the following questions:
    Are macaws noisy pets?
    Do macaws make good pets?
    How messy are macaws?
    How loud are macaws?
    Should I get a blue and gold macaw?
    Is a blue and gold macaw the right pet for me?
    How long do macaws live for?
    What are the downsides of owning macaws?
    PLUS MANY MORE.

    I love how you show how hard it is to have this bird! I think so many people think they can get this bird, leave it living in a cage and it will be happy! NO, it is hard work to keep this bird at least mainly happy, giving it a long life and free flight! xx

    This is such a great video, and so informative! I am *not* thinking of getting a macaw (already ruled that out), but I love them, and think they are the most beautiful birds! I think I will stick with small birds (budgies & conures)... but I love all birds, and am fascinated by the larger ones, so I really enjoy watching other bird owners' experiences. I can tell you are very good bird "parronts"! I've subscribed and look forward to watching more videos :)

    Not sure what to think. I hear about so many different experiences people go through with their own beautiful Macaws. Some even say some have been very demanding and difficult to deal. With while others say they been real easy going to deal with including bird sanctuary ones. They can be so varied in personalities. The only thing most people agree on is that they are messy eaters, need big indoor and out door cages and toys to take apart except for some of the smaller parrots. I find there desire is to tear apart toys are less and slower like my Quaker is very slow at tearing thing apart except for a few lamp shades. She has been a pretty cooperative bird. She does like to bite my chin a lot though which I hope I can slow her down a little. Anyways I hope to get a Gold and Blue Macaw one day when it is right hopefully a fist care one from a sanctuary. Love rescue animals. Even rescue birds.

      It's a good thing to get a rescue Parrot but what you need to think of is you may not be able to handle the bird & it could be a biter a constent screamer ect, You don't & won't know from what background it's come from, it could have been abused ect so be mindful of that. Good luck hope you do find one

    I loved watching. Thank you for sharing! I am interested in adopting a macaw and I appreciate all the information! You said that you have children. I have 3 children ages 3, 5 and 7. We have other animals and they are all very gentle and respectful of them. I don't plan on allowing them to pet or hold a macaw until they are much older. In your experience how have your children done with Shelby?

    • @ShelbyTheMacaw
      @ShelbyTheMacaw  Před 3 lety +4

      Hi there, we have four children aged 5 - 15. The three older children have a great relationship with Shelby and happily and confidently hold her. The youngest, my 5 year old daughter, is very wary of Shelby. Shelby is also very wary of her! I never leave them alone together even though nothing has ever happened but I want them to build their relationship at a pace that suits them both. As it stands my daughter has stroked and cuddled Shelby, and Shelby has landed on her back and head before, but she has never held her with her hand, and I will allow them to work to that in their own time! Funnily enough, we are soon filming a 'macaws and children' video, so maybe that will help in some way? x

    It's pretty much like having a special needs child, so if you aren't prepared or willing to devote the love, attention, and care for one of these wonderful creations of nature then, if you want to enjoy one in person it's best to just go to a park or zoo that allows interaction with them on a visitors basis. I have always wanted one since I was a child and had the opportunity to be in contact with some and even as a young adult being with them when I vacationed in Hawaii and still would love to have one but not until I have the right environment to raise one in. You shouldn't have them indoors if you are a smoker or cook meals with heavy odors. Their health is the utmost importance both their physical and mental well being has to take priority. Someday I will be honored to have one but like I said, not until I have a proper home for it. Thank you for posting this video and sharing the joy you have with Shelby.

    This was a very good video enough to put most people off getting a macaw, you didn’t mention that there meant to be in the wild but that goes for all birds (excluding chickens) I almost can’t believe people think it inexpensive, easy, short term pet to keep they’re the opposite and they keep you not the other way

    • @cerhn
      @cerhn Před 8 měsíci

      The wild is growing increasingly sparse. I think that if they can have a good relationship with their keepers, it's an island of hope and human interaction with the wild. I'm not going to point out quail, pheasants and other commonly kept birds. But why is it ok with chickens, who endure the worst of industrial farming, often losing their beaks and kept in close confinement? Why is that ok vs basically having a parrot toddler, which is what this is?

      I mean this with the best intentions. Please don’t be offended. But 4 hours of research is just not enough. I took ten years, most others spend at least 2 years researching.
