We learned the 2nd half of this year that if Domi can be just about as prolific as Marner in the same situations (He pretty much was) at a fraction of the cost plus grit, then Marner is surplus to our needs for his price tag.
Yeah, not exactly a 1 to 1, but Domi does have some playmaking chops. The real question then is, is Marner even worth half of his contract? Domi is only making 3 mil.
Players who produce as much as marner are gonna get 10 million dollars. That's pretty much a given. The raise marner is going to ask for will be unacceptable. @MisterMister5893

Yeah they need players with grit who can play clutch when it matters. They need another good defenceman and a better goalie and you got a team that can make 3 rounds of playoffs. Right now they spent all that money on core 4 with no move clause there's nothing left to make any moves.

I've got news for Strudy, your Oilers aren't very close either. They haven't won shit. They're using the former Leafs 3rd stringer as their starter, haven't made the cup finals, ect. They're failing year after year as well but yet I've listened to him on Edmonton radio talking about how they're right there.
I'm life long Leaf fan probably just like you are , forget the oilers he's 100 % right if you see Vegas Colorado Florida Dallas that's big boy hockey the leafs are a bunch of ballerinas compared to those teams .

Every GM in the league has seen how Marner has performed in the playoffs every year. And with that huge contract and cap hit, no one would take him. Best plan is to play him all season and let him do his offensive thing. When playoffs start, sit him in the press box and replace him with a Marlie that's playing well
Problem with keefe is he played the top guys too much and didn’t mix it up. Look what happened when nylamder and Mathew’s were out. He was forced to play differently and the team looked a lot like Florida type of team. So the best things to do is mix things up

Except Tavares' minutes dropped by 3 minutes on average. Babcock prioritized John and made the others work for their minutes which is what I wanted Keefe to do
Keefe played his best guys because they have the best scoring odds. That's why his record is the best in franchise history. At least in regular season. But they don't produce enough in playoffs and that's to be expected as they're competing against better teams. They need to build a strong second and third lineup and need a better goalie. The core 4 put in good work but they spent so much money there's nothing left for the supporting cast.
@@rapideye85 Babcock wasn't entirely wrong. He dynamically adjusted the players time based on their performance basically rotating the hot hand.
You get something for Marner, a propect goalie and a pick, extend McCabe and sign Pesce as a FA with the cap space. Ask Edmonton if a coaching change can make a difference. I dont recall the Oilers trading key pieces when they turned theirseason around.

Running the core back would be completely 100% unacceptable. There were long stretches of 20+ games that I didn't watch this year. If all of Marner, JT and Nylander return, I won't be watching a single game. My fandome in the Leafs may be coming to a close.
They're locked in so they're staying put with no move clause. They're going to have to work with very limited cap space to try to build supporting cast who aren't scoring enough. They also need a better goalie. Sorry but you're stuck with Leafs likely never win Stanley Cup in our lifetime. They also gotta rebuild Raptors and Jays and neither looks in good shape either. Leafs winning a cup might actually have better odds. LoL

For a start - why not just lower expectations with Leaf Fans in Toronto? Before the Leafs have a chance to win - they really need Core 4 upgrades to contend in the playoffs. They are fine in the regular season. It just is tough watching Mitch in the playoffs every spring with playoff officiating. 😀
You know there was a time when Leafs couldn't even make playoffs so it was cause for celebration if they made the cut... even if they're blown away in the first round. Now we have it for granted and want more in playoffs.

Majority of the time they lost to teams that made the finals in majority of the case. Tough opponents all the time but this year. This was a winnable series. Need a new captain and it can’t be Mathew’s. It has to be a tough guy who is willing to fight for anyone and defend the players. Oriely type. Has to be a new guy. Someone like wendle Clark

Edmonton would be a one and done team in the East facing Boston, Florida, or Tampa over the last 5 years too. Edmonton and Toronto are really similar in the end, but Edmonton gets to kick LA ass every year.

Tavares is the only good player out of the core 4 and has to deal with players who don't give him the puck in scoring position. You can keep Tavares and Nylander. Trade the others while their value is high and get clutch players. Domi, Bertuzzi, Jarnkrok are all great forwards as well

One thing nobody brings up is that in the entire history of the NHL only 3 coaches have won cups on different teams. 2 in the 1930-40's and one other, just only rhe best coach in nhl history Scotty Bowman. So very hard for coaches to win on different teams it never really happens. So why not get a coach who hasn't won yet who has a good record , might give u a better chance to win.
They did. O'Keefe was a brand new up and comer with no NHL experience and frankly he delivered... in the regular season.

I know people aren't going to like this, but Tavares, Marner, and Rielly either need to go, or have their salaries vastly reduced to make space for the cap.
Can't do anything about Matthews and Nylander's deals, but Tavares and Marner are on expiring NMCs so we need to figure out something.
Expiring contracts bring back very little. I would attempt to move Matthews.
Matthews is your top goal scorer. Without him there is no team.

He has a contract with term and had a good year. They would get a good return . Players that are becoming UFA's don't bring back as much and never get equal value.

This team is nowhere close to a Cup, They are soft, D is not good, No goaltending, Their top guys are the softest on the team and disappear when it matters the most, Games 5, 6 and 7's. Marner and Matthews are prime examples of it, Marner in games 1 through 4 42pts in 36 games, Games 5 through 7 9pts in 21 games. Matthews 5 game 7''s 0 goals and 1 in game 6's, Tavares too.
