Also, this video is not an attempt to dunk on the Sky staff, I believe they are doing the best that they can but ownership needs to hire more people so that the staff have the time to allow them to make press conferences and other things higher quality. For those who are calling on people to get fired, that’s not cool and not what I want to see, the staff just needs more resources to work with.

It’s an introductory press conference. This is the norm across all sports. Almost every single player has their introductory press conference at their practice facility with only the media there and no celebration. Don’t believe me. Go search up the names of wnba and nba draft picks and you will see the exact same thing. Ya really just trying to make something out of nothing.

I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. Had they booked a better place for Angel’s press conference, some new fans wouldn’t have known how bad the sky gym was & becoz of the outrage from some people, believe you me the owners saw everything online & they will start working on that. The one on the Chicago sky page was a lot better but it was still terrible like I could hear the questions but you could tell they needed Mike’s. They could’ve passed around mike or something even the NCAA. Did it better than this

In every sport the top pick usually always a huge welcome. Heck Cameron Brink and Kamila the 2nd and 3rd pick had their press conferences on Zoom. The 7th pick isn’t considered a game changing pick, but more of a role player. Also Almost always teams hold them in their practice facility. It’s just the Sky’s practice facility isn’t the best.
It sad especially given Dwayne Wade is in the ownership group and Chicago has a lot of gym facilities in the area plenty of places that would have given easy access to the media.

If you did a little research, you would see that almost every player even in the NBA and NFL had their intro press conference at their practice facility with only the press being invited. There’s no fanfare. No cheering or celebration. But of course ya see the #1 draft pick and expect everyone else to get the same treatment.

Clark is for sure getting the hype because of her skills. She got drafted #1 because she is a generational talent whose talent is expected to lead the fever to championships. Also 7th pick in the NBA draft is expected to be an all star players whereas in the WNBA it’s a role player. Just look at the All NBA team last year. 6 out of 10 players in the 1st and 2nd team were picked 7th or later. Now compare that to the WNBA where only 1 players out of 10 was picked 7th or later. The Superstars of the NBA range from the 1st pick to a 2nd round pick. Whereas with the WNBA almost all the superstar are players that were picked 1-3. That’s why you can’t compare WNBA draft to NBA draft. It’s like comparing the NBA draft to the NFL draft.

You are absolutely right about what they could have done better. I have always maintained that the WNBA is not run like a serious business. No serious business will have a press conference like this, where you can't hear the questions. This is the era of CZcams, and the video of the presser will be uploaded on to YT. So, only amateurs will have this kind of lighting, audio and background.

The Sky practice facility isn’t the only one in the WNBA that’s outdated, but to build brand new practice facilities take time and money. Have you watched introductory press conferences before?? Almost all press conferences in every sport is quiet. You don’t hear the media cheering for players. Go look at the press conferences for Jaden Daniels and other NFL picks from the draft and same with the nba drafts. It’s usually held in their practice facility which is only accessible for the media as well. Of course there are some exceptions like if you’re the #1 overall pick or outlier teams but what Angel received is the norm. It’s just their practice facility isn’t the best looking facility. But in terms of it being quiet. That is the norm

Quita - That intro to the Chicago Sky was an absolute embarrassment. I'm not a Sky fan, but my goodness, that was shameful. What did they have, maybe ten people there? That was horrible. That was a lesson on how NOT to make an athlete feel welcomed. Quita, you should be their head of marketing. You mentioned a lot of great ways to have had a lot of people come to greet her. The best move the Sky could make would be to hire you to head their PR department because whoever has that position now definitely needs to replaced.

The presser for T-Spoon was much better, but there was a huge opportunity to take it up a notch for this year's drafted players😕. Even if they'd done similar for Angel, Kamilla and Brynna as they did for coach Spoon, there would be nowhere near this much criticism.
What a stark difference from the actual red carpet the fever laid down and the huge press conference. And Caitlin Clark came looking like a movie star.
Of course it is different know. CC in Indiana was taken care of by her team and staff. Can't blame her for that.

Reese being greated like that is on the organization. Chicago is going to be a force and they just embarrassed themselves. Reese took it in stride, but I am sure she felt slighted. Let's hope the Sky get their act together. Having been the home to so many NBA championships during the Jordan era, they seem like basketball has taken a back seat in the Windy City.
Sky management could have reached out to a hotel or an event venue. I’m sure some company would have done it for free in exchange for advertisement.
They could have done it at SunTrust Arena if not they have a hotel right next door 😔

I think the Las Vegas Aces have set a new standard of supports for their WNBA franchises, and the other teams have taken notice. Both Phoenix and Dallas announced they will roll out new practice facilities within the next year. The money that Chi-Barbie is bringing in should motivate the Sky to step up also, and they have an advocate with D Wade being part of the ownership group.
Gotta love Angel for her confidence and respect for the Vets in the game you can tell she was raised right and the fact how she is handling being teammates with her rival I love her and Flau’jay so much and Kim Mulkey and the LSU SQUAD period point blank they are the reason I tuned in/locked in so much to women’s college basketball🫡💯💯💯❣️

I love that you made this video clip. Made me want to share something I experienced as a professional songwriter in the 80's. This will be long so bare with me.
I was blessed to write songs for Whitney Houston and many others in the 80's. When digital keyboards and drum machines arrived in the 80's they were expensive and everyone who could afford them bought all the latest expensive gear and sold a lot of their old used analog gear to music stores and pawn shops. Many of the young musicians who could afford the new gear were from the suburbs and had money, but to be honest with you most of them lacked the talent. So even though they had all the best new gear they could not write a great song if their life depended on it.
Now on the other hand, most of the kids who were broke or from the hood could only afford the old used gear that many people said was inferior to the new digital gear. But they forgot the most important thing. It's not the gear it's the person with the talent that can make the hit records and that is exactly what happened especially in the genre of rap and hip hop. Dudes from the hood were buying up all the old gear because it was cheap and they took that old gear and made hit records with it because they had the talent. Especially those who were making rap and hip hop records and we see how that genre of music exploded all over the world.
So the analogy I am making is that the Seattle Storm can have the best new facility in the WNBA and there is nothing wrong with that, and the Chicago Sky can upgrade their facility and that's cool too, but I believe Angel starting out in a parks and recreation gym will just motivate her even more to prove that the facilities are not as important as the talent and the competitive mindset and determination Angel, Kamilla, Coach T-Spoon and the others have to win games and championships.
Deion Sanders "Coach Prime" went 12-0 at Jackson State and the facilities were not great. He goes to Colorado that has one of the best facilities in the country and he started making the program better than it was at 1-11 before he got there, but with the great facilities and a few star players they still only went 4-8.
Dawn Staley was short from the hood and look what she accomplished in college, the WNBA, the Olympics, the Hall of Fame and South Carolina. They just went 38-0 and won the national championship after losing their entire starting 5 and having to build all over again. Nobody including Dawn thought they could win the National Championship let alone go 38-0. It's all about the talent and the mindset and determination to win!
Angel and Kamilla are winners with the talent and in the end of the day that's more important than the facilities in my opinion. Drop Mic! 🎤🏀

It was sad and underwhelming, and dare I say slightly disrespectful. Like you said this is someone who has helped to reinvigorate/rejuvenize women's basketball. This reception just ain't it!!! This was my concern with her going to Chicago. They are rebuilding, and I don't know if they will welcome her in a way that she may deserve. Their priorities may not be on maintaining a good rapport (keeping her beyond this year). I think the goal is to boost sales and bring eyes to the team(which it should be). I just was worried about this sort of stuff.

Agreed with all of your ideas Quita. The WNBA teams need to take advantage of these big college names coming into their teams, a lot more eyes on them. They have to do better and aim higher. Like you said the Aces, Seattle Storm and Fever are doing a great job, but the Chicago Sky should have had a sold out welcome event for both KC and AR. Or have a get to know the team event where they are signing jerseys, something!

I don't follow the Sky, and I don't know much about the WNBA, but I know a lot about poor management. Quita is right, they could have done this in a back alley and made a better impression than they did. It's about thoughtfulness and appearances. Who wants to go where they don't put any effort to welcome you? If this is the way they approach coaching, they will have a losing team.
Great video, Quita. You did a masterful job of juxtaposing the Sky's player facilities and their welcome for Angel Reese with what the top franchises do. The Aces and Storm's dedicated facilities have proven to be the difference in attracting quality (superstar!) free agents and the Lynx's introduction for Alissa Pili was classy and heartwarming. I hope the Sky get a better approach from ownership where they look to lead the league rather than just keep up.
I think this is great way to lovingly push the Sky's marketing team along. There will always be growing pains. The projected growth of the WNBA requires these issues be addressed. Also this is a great opportunity to grab attention just prior to the start of league play is a dream scenario for any team. I am sure the Sky is not the only team and maybe the league itself can step in and make suggestions for when teams bring in such stars for initial introductions.
