The very first Opinel I had was a n°8 I found in my land, maybe lost by one of our gardeners. But the first one i bought was a carbon n°6 and i totally agree with you, it's the perfect size to carry and use. Even if I'm a victorinox guy, i love this little knife.

Good choice young man! The Walnut #6 is my go-to ultralight backpacking knife, because you get 3 inches of decent drop-point cutting edge, a proper sized handle which is more moisture-resistant than the standard beech, a backspine which will easily raise a fat spark from a ferro rod (with the knife closed!), an effective locking system, 12c27 steel which is so easy to maintain in the field, AND ALL AT ONLY 28 GRAMS!!!
So I have a few of the Walnut #6, and also of the Olive #6 which I find make charming picnic knives. Otherwise I prefer the larger Opinels, with the Walnut #9 being my favourite - awesome fishing knife which will also perform most outdoorsy stuff. And, like you, I'm fascinated by different woods, so I have a #8 in most of the woods available - the #8 is best for this, as it's the 'original' sized Opinel and therefore the one they make the largest range of. But unless you're a carbon purist (and there's nothing wrong with the Carbone, I just prefer the Inox's practicality and food-friendliness), the Walnut/Inox combo is in my opinion the best of the lot.

Man, tough to choose which one I like best. I love that the beechwood gets a nice patina over time, but the padauka with the polished steel is gorgeous. And the oak/olive handles have the most dramatic contrast in the grain. And I'm always a sucker for walnut. So I guess I just want them all? Hahahaha. I'd love to see a birds eye maple handle too!

Hi there, you have a nice collection of no. 6 👍
I have the padouk, the olive and the beech, all inox.
But I also have two coloured ones.
Color turquoise, and sage green, which have lanyard holes and small leather cords, handy to pull the knife out of the pocket, also prevents you from dropping the knife when using it.
I like the coloured ones very much, they have a modern fresh look !
No. 6 is my favourite EDC knife, the low weight is perfect.
Also I recommend the giant no. 13 which is a beast ! (kitchen use)
And the no. 12 saw is great to carry in your backpack when hiking.
    🙋‍♂️ from the Netherlands.

I've just ordered the No 6 Walnut. I couldn't work out if it would fit in my palm, like a Barlow, otherwise it would likely be uncomfortable, so I ordered the No 8 in walnut too. Well, that's my excuse anyway. I'd agree on the Sandvik. I was looking for a carbon blade, but when I saw the stainless was 12C27, I was happy enough.

  • @cocabandi

I like the walnut and the olive the best. I own two no.6's: an inox with a walnut handle and a modified blade (drop point) and a carbon steel that I left stock. Live them and get a lot of use of the inox, more than the carbon steel. Thanks.

  • @pje6882

I had a #9 stainless in walnut even had my initials engraved on the blade. My Brother caught a glimpse of it and was intrigued by the simplicity, so I gave it to him as a memento. I just ordered a #9 with oak handle in stainless with the phrase "live free" on the handle. As an EDC it's all I need I can use it in the kitchen and defend myself with it. I was one who was endlessly looking for the perfect knife. watching video after video of all the choices and price ranges can you believe I settled on a 35 dollar Opinel. This is a knife I will actually use daily and not have stuck in a drawer afraid to damage. Nothing fancy but old school history

Well, the two Opinel's arrived. Dear God, a light strop and they produced a whole new level of sharp. I've sanded and given them some mineral (Baby) oil to bring up some grain. The No 6 now has a Zulu style point, but I've kept the secret of it's success, the Yatagan recurve. On the No8, I've changed the shape of the butt, so it curves towards the tip when folded. I'm looking at the No9 already, so I guess I'm hooked.

just got myself stainless steel oak number 6 today, and i can tell that its most optimal size to carry it in a pocket without getting upset about to loose it, because i've had beech number 7 before, and, maybe its just placebo effect, but oak feels like little bit more weight in hand, so I do not worry about it to fall out of a pocket accidentally.

How does the #6 feel in your hand? Would a #7 feel better? My #8 is a perfect fit for my hand, and my first one was a #7, which I lost, and which I loved because it looked so inoffensive.

    • @TheStreamingEnderman
      @TheStreamingEnderman  Před 5 měsíci +1

For me, the No.6 is just right. Any smaller and I'd say it's "too small", however. So if you have larger hands, it may not suit you as well as a '7 or an '8. The larger sizes are equally comfortable, (for me) so I'd say the No.6 is the smallest it could be before entering the realm of uncomfortable.
      Cheers!

I love the Olive handle because it's heavier and looks sturdier.
    So I wanted to ask.
What is the weight comparison between these knifes?
Which one is the heaviest and lightest?
Is Oak the most dense wood?

    • @TheStreamingEnderman
