    Dejavu around 9:10. In my experience the EVO is a better track car due to it's stiff and aggressive handling. They give you that jarring rollercoaster feedback. The Sti is a great daily driver or canyon ski car that makes your commute fun, but comfortable. I LOVE on-ramps in the Sti. The only down side is driving a manual transmission during long traffic jams. The manual trans romance dies hard in stop and crawl traffic.

      @hooviedoovie5220 Před 9 lety +3

      +Brian Athay subaru are more rally racing centred than track, that's why the suspension is softer and the drivetrain is mostly mechanical. if you put a skid plate on the bottom of the car, and you aren't scared to scratch the paint, you can go rally and face minimal issues. if you did that with the evo, you'd not have as good of traction, suspension damage (more-so than the sti), the rear diff would freak out and probably cause problems. there's a reason subaru has won nonstop this season in Rally America

      But no, seriously I hate DCT transmissions, at any low speed they're jerky, like I find parking with one really annoying, it's just jerks every time, Where in a manual you can easily control it with the clutch. If it's a DCT done properly, like VW's is a very good DCT like in the Golf R. I drove one with a DCT and was pleasantly surprised by how refined it was at low speeds, but I'd still enjoy the manual better

    But the Evo is faster from zero to 60 despite “more weight and less HP”, doesn’t understeer in corners, is faster at the quarter mile and brakes in a shorter distance. I honestly thought this would be an unbiased review but I don’t know how it could be so inconsistent with every car journalist out there and published acceleration and skid pad test data.

  • @tHoM0r
    @tHoM0r Před 9 lety +7

    I've test driven a 2013 STI and driven my brother's evo X quite a lot. The one thing that stuck out to me is the handling differences between the cars. The STI had plenty of grip but always tended to feel like understeer when pushed a little. Conversely, when the Evo is pushed in a curve, the car rotates nicely around its center from the apex to corner exit due to the good work done by the AYC. This is a huge thing for me, understeer isn't fun. That said, has the 15 Sti been improved in this aspect?

  • @MrGovenator1

    Lol, another point I disagree with: suspension is fantastic for gravel roads, at least in Evo, not sure about STI as I never took it off road. Evo's suspension is still on lower speeds, but once you take it somewhat faster on gravel roads, suspension comes to life and it's a different vehicle. Very capable on gravel roads.

  • @TheKatakisan
    @TheKatakisan Před 8 lety +17

    The information you shared in this video on the Mitsubishi AWC system and Tarmac/Gravel/Snow settings is completely incorrect. Good research is called for when comparing platforms with such avid followers, particularly when your channel is titled "Engineering Explained." The different settings of the AWC do NOT adjust the power split front-to-rear whatsoever; the power is distributed 50:50 front/rear all day, every day, 365 days per year. Call it a pro or a con, but it is not adjustable; it has never been adjustable. Hence the power split front/rear is also never a laughable 80/20 in any situation. This is complete nonsense. The AWC settings accommodate a driver's desire to maximize traction on road surfaces of differing slipperiness by allowing settings for a more broad or reduced range of differing axle speeds front/rear (not torque differences front/rear; wheel speed is not wheel torque) before differential lock. The torque split remains constant at 50/50 through all three settings. This function allows substantial multi-surface traction benefits over other types of differentials. The Evolution and STi platforms have plenty of their own respective strengths and weaknesses, as well as the likes/dislikes of personal preference (I'm sure there will be discussions and arguments for years to come), but please try to keep the objective information accurate. If you don't know how something works, please don't make stuff up just so you have something to say onscreen. As for the where this conversation goes in the future, I agree with you that the Focus RS vs STi topic will become the focus (no pun...) as the Evo has taken its final bow.

      +Engineering Explained, in contextualizing your response to me, no, I was not incorrect - I was imprecise. My comment was solely in response to your explanation of the function of the AWC Tarmac/Gravel/Snow settings, and the inference of the manual adjustability of the torque splits. I was not intending to speak to the torque-vectoring capabilities of the complete AWD system and it's various componentry, which your linked video explains quite well. As I re-read my post, I did get "ranty/preachy" and my verbiage lost specificity in the process. I apologize, both for the lack of clarity and the tone. I have no desire to be or become a troll. It goes to your credit you acknowledged and corrected the error long before I noticed it today. And for the record, you do quite well speaking to a camera -- it's a very hard thing to speak intelligently and concisely when being recorded. Make it a great day!

    You kept bringing up the 5 speed vs 6 speed and the six speed having a distinct advantage in staying in boost (3500+rpm). The evo's very easy to stay in boost. 2nd gear at 50-70 for power. 3rd from 70-110 for power etc. I don't see an advantage in having the sixth gear for performance purposes, at least not in a car like the evo where the gear ratios are tight.

    The fast that you are comparing Evo X, which is 9 years old with a 2016 STI proves that Evo is awesome. Streering adjustment is a very poor argument. Also the fact it has a dual clutch and not a manual is a very biased disadvantage. You kept repeating again and again that Evo is heavier, yet it has the same fuel mileage and it''s faster on track. 100 kilos is nothing if you have that transmission and that AWD system. I completely ignored the storage space part.

  • @BeanieNinjay0
    @BeanieNinjay0 Před 8 lety +21

    Sounded pretty biased to be honest. I get that there isn't an evo comparable to the newest sti because they're not made anymore, but why take that route in comparing these cars when you're attempting to be objective? That's like me comparing a 2011 mustang gt to a 2016 camaro ss. And I have to disagree on the conclusion as well. I almost got an sti but decided not to because I knew several people that had brand new ones with reliability issues shortly after purchasing them. I'm talking about engine failures here. But with that aside, I've been in both and would say the evo x was much sharper in steering feel, and felt just as quick, if not quicker than the sti I was in despite the weight difference. It just felt like a sharper car overall than the sti.

    Not sure where your information came from, but the torque split for the Evo X is locked at a nominal 50:50 split, and that holds true no matter what driving surface you choose via the ACD. Also the functionality of the ASC is to allow differing wheel speeds from left to right based on steering angle and throttle position. (torque vectoring) With ASC engaged, the car will modulate the throttle for you, and vector torque to the corners with the most traction the quickest; the most intrusive stability control profile. With ASC partially turned off, a greater difference in wheel speeds will be allowed as well as more driver modulated throttle control and steering angle. With ASC completely disengaged (press and hold for ~3 seconds) it's really in the driver's control to modulate the throttle and steering angle to get the cornering characteristics he/she wants. Switching ACD modes (Tarmac, Gravel & Snow) determines how much torque will be used to overdrive the outside wheel, and just how quickly it decides to do that.
    Otherwise, a great review.

    Much respect, sir! I appreciate the content you bring to CZcams, a place which is generally overflowing with stupidity, as is the case with just about any social gathering place, especially virtual ones. That said...The boxer engine should have much higher output. In your black intercooler mythbusting video, you talk about the significance of 3%. The Subaru Boxer engine is 2.5 liters, which is 25% larger than the Evo's 4B11T engine with just 2.0 liters of displacement. As such, specific power output is relatively poor on the Subie. It's also worth pointing out that it's much easier to make more power with aftermarket parts on the Evo as the aluminum 4B11T has much in common with its predecessor, the legendary 4G63T. Very few of these cars are left stock by their owners (I see the link to your Cobb APv3 video). If the Subie's specific power output were on par with the Evo, it'd be putting down 364 BHP from the factory.Also, I don't understand why so many people choose to compare a manual transmission car against the Evo MR and then complain about the lack of driver involvement and the price tag in the MR. I solved both these issues by buying the GSR (the manual 5-speed). The high gear in the MR is almost the same as in the GSR and trust me when I tell you that the GSR's gear ratio is more than close enough. You'll never find yourself unable to get to a gear in the powerband. That struck me as a ridiculous statement, especially when you're seeking the manual transmission so you can be sure you won't be driving on autopilot. Both the MR and GSR are left wanting for a badly needed overdrive gear.Every video I've seen comparing the late model STI with the Evo X of any year has had the Evo winning in handling, speed and overall enjoyment. The Subie's AWD system still can't touch the Evo's, which has been unchanged since the 2008 model year, to the best of my knowledge. We won't mention the lack of quality/amenities of the Evo's interior, except for those Recaro seats (sorry, owners of the 2015 Evo). Perhaps, you'd find the car you're looking for if you'd give the Evo GSR a chance. The '14 has the infotainment system you mentioned and retains the Recaro's which were replaced with basic seats for the '15 model year.Oh yeah, and the Evo's estimated range is always 210 miles when you first start it after fueling up (just 14 mpg but who's counting?). Once you get going, it adjusts the range based on your driving style. I was able to get 300+ miles on a tank on the highway in my '13 GSR while having fun much of the way.

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  Před 8 lety +2

      +John C Specific output for turbocharged engines isn't really that meaningful of a number. All it means is that the Evo uses higher boost levels. Put more air in any engine, and it makes more power per liter.

    • @Johnlc081102
      @Johnlc081102 Před 8 lety +3

      I agree with you about turning up the boost pressure to increase output within a given system. But you're implying that you're comparing apples to apples, when in fact you're comparing apples to oranges. Also, I'll assume you're right that the Boxer engine runs lower boost, which would result in a lower specific output. If balanced just right, the lower boost with higher displacement would result in the same approximate output of the Evo, which seems to be the case. But if that's true, then why wouldn't Subaru just turn up the boost at the factory and run the Evo into the ground?
      If it were as simple as turning up the boost, Subaru could do that (and undoubtedly would to win the rivalry against the Evo). If the Boxer engine had the ability to run higher boost (reliably) and make the additional power that it's greater displacement suggests it should be capable of, it would help to make up for some of the STI's relative lack of handling prowess. The fact is that the Boxer engine is inferior and it would fall apart under the additional stress. If it could run the same boost that the Evo runs from the factory, output would be higher, but they'd lose reliability as a production vehicle and the sales would plummet. They would if they could, to win the rivalry. It's obviously important to them, as it is to Mitsubishi. The fact is, Subaru couldn't compete with Mitsubishi at 2.0 liters which is what prompted their decision to increase displacement to 2.5 liters.

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  Před 8 lety +2

      John C You're absolutely right about how one should not compare apples to oranges. Which is why, as I've stated, I think it's fairly meaningless to compare these engines based on specific output. Saying that Subaru couldn't compete with a 2.0L so they made a 2.5L is quite silly, considering that Subaru chose to use an existing platform, and the fact that they run a 2.0L in the JDM STI. You don't know all of the reasons why they used a 2.5L, and neither do I. But it's quite silly to say they used a 2.5L simply because they couldn't match the Evo's 2.0L specific output (they have, and can).
      Let me also say I'm not saying one design is better than the other, I'm just saying it's pointless to compare these based on specific output without all of the details. More boost = more power. Period.

    evos are faster than sti's most of the time. Esp compared to the junk ej25 powered usdm ones with horrible factory tuning, tiny laggy stock turbos and cast pistons. The jdm 2.0 is a far more durable engine and a 8000 rpm redline.
    Subaru is so cheap they don't even bother to adjust the gear ratios to compensate for a 7000 rpm in the US models hence why it takes 2 shifts to hit 60mph.
    Also the evo handles better at the limit, more responsive steering, and doesn't need 10k worth of crap to hit 400whp.
    To the guy who said that the evo is dead and the wrx is here. Well Subaru sells many other cars. a company can't survive just selling one good car esp if it is a nitch car that barely makes a profit. Mitsubishi with the exception of the evo are terrible cars.

    Reasons I got my 2011 STI over an Evo X:
    1. I didn't want DCT or a 5-sp transmission.
    2. I wanted folding rear seats with full pass-through from cabin to trunk. The STI's folding seats make it far more practical.
    3. I wanted cruise control (I don't believe the Evo came with that from the factory...I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, though). My first car had no cruise control...never again will I buy a car without it. Cross-country driving without CC SUCKS!
    5. I didn't want a non-telescoping steering wheel.
    6. The Evo had a small fuel tank. That's not bad in itself until you factor in the mediocre fuel economy. Bad combination there.
    Regarding the video, I agree that the cars are not really rally cars...rally-inspired, maybe.

    From a modding perspective, evos are cheaper to get higher power levels out of, Subarus are pretty expensive to make power with. That's why so many people pick up evos as a platform. In stock form I would agree the sti is a better car, but I would also say the with the new sti and Wrx that the WRX is a better buy than the sti. It really does come down to preference and brand loyalty and what not. Personally I would take an Evo due to the cheaper cost with modding. 300 horsepower does not equal 0-60 times in the 3.5 seconds. Maybe and i mean just maybe 420 horsepower might do 3.5 0-60 mph on a sticky track and drag slicks on all 4 tires and a pro driver behind the wheel on a car weighing 2900 pounds. 300 horsepower equals more towards the 4.2-4.5 second range especially on street tires.There's more to talk about on this subject but I'm not looking for a arguement. But i had to say something. I have a friend that just bought a brand new STI stock which is around 300 at the wheels and with a stop watch the best time to 60 mph was 4.2. His worst was 4.6 due to his cluch bogging and then some brief wheel spin. I know a stop watch isn't fully accurate but it's enough to prove how hard it is to get to 60 mph under 4 seconds on a stock STI brand new....

    TheKatakisan is completely correct. The only Japanese awd car I can think Of with an 80/20 split is the mazdaspeed6 and that was only cruising on the highway. Also that is Not the EvoX infotainment system. That is the Rockford Fosgate sterio. The infortainment system is a $3k option that includes engine perameter display as well as awd torque mappping, g-force display as well as sat-nav and everything else under the sun. In this video... yup a cd player blutooth capable sterio with satellite radio part of the SSS package. Sight (xenon headlights), sound (rockford fosgate system), and Spoiler. Also here is a total victory for the evolution. Car guys are probably going to tune these cars almost immediately after purchase. The stock block/head combination on the Evo x will safely and easily get you to 400 whp and more with proper engine tuning. The sti on the otherhand... nope. Try to push the stock sti block to 400 awhp which by the way is north of 500 crank horse power and you're going to have a very bad time. First, Say goodby to the ringlands. The new FA engines in the WRX are proving themselves to be a better option compaired to the EJ. The intake system in on the 4b11T is terrible, just a bolt on intake from kaizen tuning will net you 35whp. This isn't ricer math either. It really will. The sti while also limited in the breathing department will net close to 15whp with a simalarly priced cobb intake system. How do I know? I used to own a Mazdaspeed 6, Now I own a 2014 EvoX GSR, and My wife has a 2015 WRX.

    let's admit the fact that the Evo responds to upgrades better then the sti. both are great but driving both , I love the Evo overall. I will say the sti is more comfortable driving in long distance but ended up getting an Evo 8

    Great video review, I was sort of hard pressed on which car to pick but because the STI has more new and standard features plus a dealer support that isn't going to disappear from America anytime soon, that is what pushed me toward buying an STI. Btw, those blues are drop dead gorgeous:)

    Nice coverage. I think you hit a lot of good points. I also think you hit a big point with the hatchback, something Subaru should have considered when thinking about discontinuing the wagon. However, Subaru made the choice based on sales of the car. The simple matter was Subaru owners propagated towards the Outback and Forester for the big haulers if they actually sought out that feature. However, the hatch version does fit a niche market that wants both the higher performance trim and the high level practicality. It's just that sales numbers didn't define that niche to be all that big. This was also a funding decision for the project in terms of total cost to develop both together and time frame to complete the project. There is interest in the hatch, but there's also interest in the Levorg. Subaru's just following the sales numbers, so they're making sound judgement, even if it annoys the smaller niche segments.
    I liked the part about the Ford Focus RS. I do think that's a key point when discussing these cars. MItsubishi and Subaru were unique in the segment a decade ago. However, many others have come in. There are now direct competitors under the VW and Audi badges, and Ford's bringing in its new rival. Subaru and Mitsubishi simple haven't done much of anything to advance their powertrains and keep ahead of growing competition. Frankly I think they need to take a page from Porsche's play book and up the displacement while also shaving weight where they can. Subaru has a big displacement engine that doesn't weigh all that much more. Plus they've done plenty with rally and circuit racing to know where the cars need strength and where they can save weight. They just need an interest and follow through. Otherwise competitors will walk all over them. The Focus RS is a serious contender, and unlike other brands, Ford is completely happy to make nutty cars. Not many manufacturers are willing to make a car that will specifically oversteer. Ford also has no gentleman agreements on hp limits, so power is as high as they can make the engine without blowing up.

    The WRX is better than the sti because it’s much responsive and gets it’s peak torque as soon as possible than the sti or evo

      Bobby Buck Nothing biased about a 2.0 Liter engine which a Hyundai Sonata can easily achieve. If anything, the Evo was lucky to be in the video, non the less recieve such a sugarcoated review for its nearly decade old technology.

      @brakkins1904 Před 8 lety +1

      +faheem jamal Hyundai Sonata doesn't even come close to the potential of evos so no they can't achieve it easily... Evo stock has better power better suspension... But in all actuality who keeps these cars stock? Damn near anyone so all that gets thrown out the window because suspension is always changed and the Sti can't really match the power of a Evo plus the Evo is a powerhouse compared to the Sti in modifications...
