How is it these guys aren't mentioned with the same respect as The Replacements and The Cult when it comes to 80's "alternative" guitar bands with great lyrics?
I never considered them alternative. But I went up to the singer of a cover band once ....all black and leather....did a lot like Social Distortion, Cult....."why dont you cover them?" He was like....."You know...they would be great .....we just ...hadn't thought them......" Next few times, they were playing them.
It is kind of weird that they seem to get forgotten. But, I don't think anyone even mentions The Replacements anymore, either. The Cult had a bigger international level of fame, but I never see anything about them mentioned.
I think it may be because compared to the other alternative bands of the time, The Smithereens’ music was very basic and rudimentary. Not to say it’s bad, far the fuck from it, but it’s just simpler compared to the other big bands.
I think the smithereens, the gin blossoms and toad the wet sprocket sounds similar in how their music is arranged, I would put the replacement with bands like the gas light anthem in terms of music arrangement
I saw The Smithereens around this time at the Arlington Theater in Indianapolis. After the show, the band did a few encores, then left the stage for about 20 minutes. After most of the crowd left, the band came back and played requested cover songs for about two hours. Loud as hell!
not so much underrated as the fact that when this song came out, 80s metal was going out and grunge was taking over ..... I remember this song coming out , didn't get the radio play in favor of a Nirvana and other 90s grunge bands
I went to the same high school as Pat, but didn't know him. He graduated two years before me, I assume, given our respective years of birth. The Smithereens are one of my favorite bands. RIP, Pat.

If you love the band like I do, go back and listen to the Ramones - great 3 chord songs are a bitch to write and make interesting…I’ve never been able to do it Just ask Hank Williams and Woody Guthrie….
If you came here on a whim or by accident do yourself a favor and get "11". All great songs. GO. NOW.
One of those bands that should have been way more popular than they were. Tons of great tunes. The coolest garage band ever.
I was a DJ from 1986-91 I played the S out of them,.....and everyone would ask "Who is that"
absolutly! they were great! very catchy!
Straight ahead pedal to the metal Rock n Roll. RIP Pat !!!

he was a true rocker
I keep coming back to The Smithereens.
No shit?!?!
As a aging Indianapolis punk rocker I miss the Arlington theatre! Last show I saw there was fugazi in 94 or 95.
I saw em do something similar at the Pony NYE!
They sounded just as good live, as on their albums.
This really is lightning in a bottle
RIP Pat , you were a great guy, the memories I had of you guys ill forever be dear.
Power pop masters. Love these kind of guitar solos too.
One of the coolest rock songs evaaaah! 😎
Can't get enough of this song
Supposedly arsenio had the best sounding stage in the country. True fact
Back when the networks actually invested in their shows.
It's sounds fantastic! I agree 100% SNL and LETTERMAN were horrible!
I usually love this song but I can hardly hear it.
Pat was a sweet heart and this was a great band loved in Seattle and by me ❤️
I actually remember watching this when it aired 33 years ago as a 24 yr. old. Lifetimes ago.
Smooth and powerful live performance. Great underrated band.

@@timfremstad3434oh yeah, and Kurt LOVED this band and Nirvana copied them big time hehe
Just found out the singer died i always loved this band
Same -- Green Thoughts is my fav album.
This was a great song, played often on the radio back late 80's,
Very under rated band
Saw Pat DiNizio in Ojai in 2007 alone with a drummer.
Such talent.
Pure rock n roll. Rest In Peace, Pat.
I saw the Smithereens at Music Midtown Festival back in Atlanta, and they kicked ass.
So many good memories partying to this band.
JUST LIKE THE RECORDING! Perfecto!
I like the ending for this concert performance-better than a fadeout.
They were The Cure meets The Romones. Respect.
I see where you are coming from.
The more I listen to the band the more I love this music.
So raw and gritty, but polished as a kick ass group.Rip Pat,you had a great voice and stage presence.👍✌️
I went to the same high school as Pat, but didn't know him. He graduated two years before me, I assume, given our respective years of birth. The Smithereens are one of my favorite bands. RIP, Pat.
Daaaaaaaaaang they were good.
They still are, google them and check their touring schedule.
There's that SG and Marshall crunch!!.. can't be beat for driving rock tunes!!👍👍
RIP - Pat. Smithereens amazing authentic rock and roll.
Terrific of course. My only regret seeing these guys live was the lack of harmony vocals.
i've seen them live a few times better than studio maybe you went to venues with not the best sound systems?(esp if outdoors)
Nice, dirty groove.
Nothing like good ole' New Jersey rock. Straight-up rock, that is.
Wow, they were super tight. I saw one of Pat's very last shows. I know you are rocking in heaven Pat. And thank you Jimmy for keeping the dream alive.
A favorite band for me! RIP Pat!
A great live performance. That song is classic.
Ah y de Smithereens grupazo, que buen grupo
greatest rock n roll band eva .....
RIP Pat....great band that still sounds awesome.
Amazing, pure rock n' roll. Hugs from Brazil!
Great band and song ♥️ the Smithereens!!
Love the Smithereens! So underrated!
absolutely one of the best bands of that decade. So good.
Excellent Band!!!
GREAT live band imo Jersey's best sorry BonJovi fans
best rock and roll tune EVAH!@
Great performance! Brings back some wonderful memories of their music!
This Band is so cool
Cool intro from Arsenio. Nice to put the music and artist in a bit of context instead of just throwing it to them.
By 1991 this song was aged and helped deliver the old Boston Garden a nice show before the sunset of everything.
Great performance!
You really got me
Wow! So sad!😢
Great, fun tune
Amazing!!
legends 👑👑👑👑👑
What a great song I think bands like smithereens help set the stage for grunge
That riff was familiar yet really loud and brash
Good friend s with this men, sad
For some reason, Pat DiNizio looks like Martin Landau.
Sir Ghastly Graves
No Smitherreens, No Nirvana.
Very true! Kurt loved these guys and Nirvana copied them on Nevermind big time hehe
NOT MANY BANDS USE TRIPPLE MARSHALL STACKS.
BRING THEM BACK.

NEW JERSEY UBER ALLES
These guys were Awesome back in the day. Very talented.
DHT Damaged hair
If you love the band like I do, go back and listen to the Ramones - great 3 chord songs are a bitch to write and make interesting…I’ve never been able to do it
Just ask Hank Williams and Woody Guthrie….
Drummer has a similar style to the guy who drums for cheap trick
Prefer to hear those backing vocals. Otherwise, still a nice effort here.
Holy crap, these guys stunk
It's time to shave that head, buddy!
Lower key, a slower tempo and to distorted . So different from when it 1st originally came out.i didn't feel the true vibe. God bless all rockers.
What happened to late night hosts like Arsenio and the others/ instead of the left wing media mouthpieces we're stuck with now !!!###
Sounds like crap on a Fender.
Great band!
