It’s not a curse kids. People don’t tend to last long at the top of MMA. Too much going against you:
- All the fights taking their toll
- Success gets you into all kinds of parties and other stuff taking you away from training
- Everyone wants a shot at the champ and all your moves have been studied to death
By the time they get these type of deals they are at the height of all of the above

Mighty Mouse was struck by the curse as well. He was unveiled as the cover star for the icon edition of ufc 3 in July 2018. Just one month later he lost his title in the rematch with Henry Cejudo and then left the UFC shortly after

It is not a curse, but a statistical phenomenon. It is called regression to the mean. Someone on the magazine cover probably overachieved that year, and therefore is prone to go back to prior performance. Prof Daniel Kahneman talked a lot about this.

I remember the Modelo curse years ago that was up to like 3 out of 3, or 4 of 4 ufc fighters Modela chose to work with. They were the Champ or next big thing that Modelas UFC Star forcasters picked to be their spokesperson, but as soon as they signed with Modelo, or as soon as the commercial aired the fighter was either an ex-champ, or rag dolled n no longer the next big thing. I think that Brian Ortego was last fighter they signed (just after signing Stipe Miocic.... prior to the Miocic-Ngannou 2 where Stipes longest UFC HW Title run was ended by a devastating KO). Then, Ortegas next fight was Max Holloway 😬 ! Yep, bad things. Maybe cartel kingpins were paying Modelo to voodoo curse whatever fighter they picked so that the other guy, whoever it was, would be who to put money on, as a huge underdog, and then theyd win🤔

No, that’s not how these proverbial “curses” work from my recollection. You get the cover and you immediately lose, especially coming off a win or win streak, which generally is the case since cover athletes are usually top stars/belt holders, then we can add it to the list and further give credence to it. I’ll admit that this is the first I’ve heard of a UFC curse, and now I know why. It’s nothing compared to the OG of this entire phenomenon, the well documented and much dreaded “Madden Curse”. For those unaware, this refers to NFL players being featured on the cover of the most storied football gaming franchise, only to immediately encounter something vile, which in best cases is a decline in play, although truly recognized as the quintessential video game to real life curse whereby the athlete suffers a serious, sometimes catastrophic injury, which, at the least, puts them out for the upcoming season - think ACL, Achilles, other freak injuries requiring immediate surgery followed by a rather lengthy and lamented rehabilitation period. However, a cover could be shot and then released much later, so again, need to clarify whether it’s the moment they’re announced as cover athlete or the moment the game hits the market. I don’t make the rules, I just have a brain. Having done a bit of research, it’s observed that the curse and its impact have diminished over the years, only affecting a quarter of the cover athletes featured in the last decade. In contrast, the period between 2000-2013, resulted in 14 of the 24 players (or 58%) falling victim to the aforementioned curse. So, it’s not everyone. And I’ve always noticed that many of the athletes almost embrace the decision and ultimate acceptance from the developers to be the cover star, outside of the obvious monetary compensation, as almost a challenge whereby they can be recognized as the one to have broken the curse. No surprise that this extremely egotistical stance and ultimate decision befalls those participating in one of the most physically demanding, and some would argue, barbaric, sports around.
There as been the odd fight I honestly think Jones as lost.
Because most of the MMA world still feels Jones lost against Gustafson, and again against Reyes... I'll say that the curse of the UFC game can't overcome paid judges or blind favoritism.
