  • Just in time for the holidays, I’m reviewing a couple of add-on accessories for canister stoves that sometimes may come in handy, despite the additional weight.
The Optimus Clip-On Windshield is a lightweight anodized aluminum clip-on windscreen for canister mounted stoves. It increases the stove efficiency and reduces gas consumption. It fits every brand of gas canister according to EN417 standards, and with cooking pots with a diameter up to 11cm (4.3”).
The Mountain Safety Research (MSR) LowDown remote stove adapter is an upgrade for your canister stove. It provides a wide stable base for tall or tipsy canister stove setups which lowers the stove height and allows for stability on uneven ground or even on snow/sand (with an add-on baseplate, not included). It allows stoves to support larger pots and pans for greater stability, and it moves the flame adjustment away from the stove and pot for safer cooking adjustments. It folds up and fits into a compact form when not in use. This setup also facilitates the use of a full sized windscreen around the base of the LowDown for more efficient cooking in windy situations, and inverted fuel canister setups for cold weather situations where the fuel is less capable of flowing as a gas.
    Specs:
    Optimus Clip-On: 103x115mm, 87g, $14.95
MSR Lowdown: 6.2oz (176g), works with all MSR stoves (except SuperFly) and with several other brands of canister stoves (Optimus, Soto, BRS, Gigapower, and others). Also works with the Trillium base for extra support on snowy surfaces. $49.95

I have and use the Optmus wind screen, I'm not a gram weenie or outdoor camping chef but it works fine for me. I get quite a few extra boils with it.

I haven't tried the wind screen but it looks worth checking out. Great review!

Cool products. I got me a new pocket rocket stove by MSR and love it a lot. But I like the ideas of a wind guard. Another great review, buddy!

MSR have recommended you still don’t use a heat shield with the low down accessory. Not sure why as like you, I assumed the danger has been removed by relocating the gas canister 🤔 If you watch the MSR videos on this product you’ll see what I mean.

Probably an abundance of caution for legal reasons. They allow heat shields for the Whisperlite but maybe it's a gas vs liquid fuel thing or something dealing with o rings. Who knows. Good safety comment. Thanks for watching. 😀

I wonder if you can use both of these items together. Does the windscreen fit on the lowdown.

How long is the MSR LowDown when folded?

The lowdown measures 5 1/8" straight length and about 5 1/4" diagonal length.
