Vampires - Failed Cards, Archetypes, and Sometimes Mechanics in Yu-Gi-Oh

  • Yugioh is easily the card game with the most variety in terms of visual and flavor design. From the cutesy Melffy to the edgy Dark Worlds, the game has something to offer to any and all players. As one might expect, the game draws a lot from popular culture, with almost every deck referencing something outside the card game. Obviously one of these decks is Vampires. One of the game’s oldest archetypes, this theme took a lot longer than most to gain a cohesive identity and become a proper archetype. However, with two waves of support, it seems that this deck has been scorched by sunlight without ever coming into the spotlight. So why did this happen? How did such a popular icon as vampires completely fall on their face when trying to form a cohesive deck?

They were often Cards of the Week, much like how you Monster of the Week in Tokasatsu shows like Super Sentai/Power Rangers or other such Animé like Digimon and Pokémon, which, along with Yu-Gi-Oh!, make something of a trifecta! In fact, that was often their purpose, some jus stuck with players, like Drill Warrior, for example!

Tearlaments issues are extremely apparent to see why its unanimously agreed as the worst archetype of the entire game of yugioh.
Sending your own cards to the deck? Bruh you need those in the hand so you can activate and summon them
Effects activate on being sent to the grave by card effect? Would be nice but most forms of removal are generally by battle so the effects never go off

Vampires might just be one of my favorite archetypes in the game tbh.
Not just because of the Castlevania inspired designs and lore, but also because its just so rare for an archetype to COMPLETELY change course and be rebranded the way this one has.
Going from an inefficient and slow "bleeding" effect that helps your opponent more then anything else nowadays, to one focused on losing and gaining LP , reviving themselves and each other , GY manipulation as well as potentially devastating Monster snatching.
You gotta give Konami credit, they did a good job reviving a decade old archetype, even if it did take a while.

Problem is that they hate deck destruction and that made all the cards that did it even more irrelevant. Instead of reviving the archetype they replaced it. That’s the reason I don’t like the new support. I also hate card-stealing as a mechanic so then going all in on it didn’t help my lack of enthusiasm for the new direction.

    • @MarioMastar
      @MarioMastar Před 3 měsíci

Duel LInks is the angel's hand that many archetypes needed to be usable. I swear everyone's favorite archetypes are playable in Duel Links, just makes Master duel and the TCG look like "Only worth buying cards if they're Tears or Spyrals" and if you want to play ANYTHING else, go find a playground somewhere cause no one's playing casually. Konami needs to change the ban list to be more a "Tier list" so players can enjoy more causal games at a lower level by getting rid of the game breaking Link monsters that have ruined the game since it came out.
No offense to Links, but they're the only special summon method that has no built in weakness and in fact enables cards that formerly had restrictions:
Fusions require the spell card "polymerization"
Synchros require a Tuner on the field, which most are very weak and hard to place, and some math
Rituals would be a LOT better if they were in the extra deck
XYZs are "Ranks" and have limited uses and the higher level ones are usually difficult to summon, wiht effects proportional to the level
and even Pendulums have that quirk where they go to the extra deck face up, meaning you HAVE to pendulum summon to bring them out again, no monster reborn or graveyard stuff, also their scales can make or break thier usage as one or the other and master rule 4 heavily nerfed pendulum summoning
Links... uh..... literally have no weakness. the arrows could've been a weakness if you NEED cards in the spaces each arrow points to to summon them, but as they are... the arrows are just a bonus or even a non-factor for most link monsters. The only reason they're balanced in Duel Links is because the generic Link monsters are really specific in their effects, the really good ones are difficult to bring out and usually archetype specific, and the broken ones are...not in the game at all. No link spider for free plays. Plus the smaller board limits what links can do with thier arrows. and the smaller deck size usually means you're playing a very specific link deck. They don't really help push plays, just give extra boosts.

@@infernaldisdain8051 Honestly the Aromas are at that weird spot where they are bad when you run them Pure, but at the same time they enable so many amazing plays in a Plants goodstuff deck, like, Aromalilith Rosalina allows you to build two Aromaseraphy Jasmine's in the middle of your Sunavalon combo while simultaneously Special Summoning from the deck the Aromage Laurel you need to trigger the effect of both copies of Jasmine, then later into the combo you can use Blessed Winds to reborn one of your Jasmine's and search yet another card not from an archetype but rather from a whole TYPE.
The Aroma Blend you use to activate Blessed Winds is also an easy way to get Spore in your GY, then there's how Aromalilith Magnolia can be combined with an Aromaseraphy Angelica's handtrap effect that is targeting Aromalilith Rosemary in the GY, to increase the attack of all your monsters by 2200 points, which is no joke in a Link-climbing deck that has no trouble filling all monster zones. Sunvine Trasher alone ends up being able to attack twice with 5400 ATK thanks to Melias, but even if you get a mediocre turn and fail to hit the ceiling, you are still usually looking at over 15,000 LP damage during the Battle Phase from your monsters' combined attacks.
Then there's the fact that the absurd amount of card advantage Jasmine generates will help you recover your board and outgrind your opponent in the event they survive your OTK, you even get to perform your Sunavalon 1-card combo all over again if you want just by shuffling back into the deck Sunvalon Dryas during your opponent's turn and Sunvine Twin during your own turn with the second effect of Blessed Winds.
What I mean to say is, the Aromas are okay as they are now in my opinion. Giving them more crazy custom support to make the Pure variant viable would only lead to the Plants goodstuff variant becoming a meta threat, which in turn would result in little Jasmine getting sent to the Banlist. This considering that the we already know the Plant goodstuff variant is going to get stronger once the Raika archetype gets added to the TCG and addresses the deck's main weakness of being far too reliant on Normal Summoning Sunseed Genius Loci to do anything.

I tried to cook with this deck in master duel with snake eyes and had some success but it also showed the real issue of not only vampires but the zombie type as a whole.
    points being
-zombies/vampire requires alot of graveyard set up with little pay off, which snake eye helps by a bit
    -recovery is not that great
-majority if not all of popular hand traps stops a zombie/vampire card
-Extra deck monsters you summon don't really extend your combo except for the higher level ones
-Any zombie support is bricky and requires them to be in the grave and another turn to see any real effect

I ran this deck in MD for a while. I got so much satisfaction when the moons aligned and I got a win. But that satisfaction more so came from “oh! It worked!” Rather than me actually making a good deck. It sucks because I love some of those effects! But like you said, its lacking that one card that ties it all together with a nice bow.

Well the idea with mistress is that all of her effects loop into each other, and are amplified when you have more of her out…
Her Special Summon can be triggered by her own send to the GY effect, the ATK/DEF gain works off of the cards your opponent sends, and said send and ATK/DEF gain effects stack with multiple instances of herself…
So if I control 3 of her, each instance of her, and every other zombie monster I control, is getting 150 ATK/DEF for EVERY card from both players hands, fields and GYs, and each time a zombie monster inflicts battle damage, your opponent has to send _3_ cards from their deck to the GY (so up to 18 if you control 3 of the mistress and 3 other zombie monsters, discounting multiple attackers or extra battle phases). Sure sending 1 or 2 cards might help your opponent more, but what happens if you do so with almost half their deck in a single battle phase?
And the gain of 50 ATK/DEF is so small that it’s VERY easy to underestimate, especially when if covers ALL your zombie monsters and is fed by so many sources. It’s supposed to be subtle but potentially dangerous, this card.

    Def: 1500

Effect3: While this card is on the field or in the GY, (Quick Effect) if your opponent special summons a monster, banish one card in your opponent’s hand.
Effect4: (Quick Effect) If this card is tributed to summon “Vampire Genesis”, then that summoned monster is unaffected by your opponent’s card effects.
    _________________________
    Vampire Genesis - Reborn
    Attribute: DARK
    Type: Zombie
    Level: 8
    Atk: 3000
    Def: 2100
Effect1: This card is always treated as “Vampire Genesis”.
Effect2: You can Special Summon this card by tributing 1 “Vampire Lord” on your side of the field.
Effect3: You’re Opponent cannot Tribute Monsters while this card is face-up on the field.
Effect4: If this card leaves the field, Special Summon it during the End Phase, and if you do, banish up to three cards from your opponent’s field and/or GY.

      @bubbasgotback431 Před 3 měsíci +5

I like the idea but I have a couple of gripes:
Firstly, Cards that change their names should only do that in the hand/field/ or GY, not while in the deck. If you say “always treated as” that means their name changes in the deck as well. This causes a problem because you can only have three of any name of a card in your deck maximum. So if someone wanted to use original Vampire Lord in their deck as well, they would have to replace one of their Reincarnateds or vice versa. You couldn’t just have all 6 in the deck.
2.) the hand rip effect of Reincarnated is too strong to not have a OPT on it.
3.) Reborn’s last effect is WAY too strong. Being able to revive itself every turn from anywhere regardless of how it got there makes it basically impossible to out permanently, and it has way too big a body and a floodgate, to have a protection effect like that. Basically, it shouldn’t have all three of those effects together.

    • @RedDragonForce2
      @RedDragonForce2 Před 3 měsíci +1

@@bubbasgotback431 given how many negates exist these days, the effects aren’t as bad as you’re truthfully stating.
But who would play the OG Vampire Lord anyways? It’s been power crept to Transylvania and back again by his own archetype that’s still outclassed by a hundred other archetypes, so the name in deck doesn’t take away from deck building. And besides, it’s not like Harpies where sharing the name limits the 1, 2, and 3 synergy. OG Vampire Lord is a 2K beat stick that serves to give your opponents pluses!
As for Reborn, I originally had it as just the GY, but it needed removal from the field as well, since many decks focus on field effects as end boards over GY effects. And I notice you’re not complaining about Reborn being treated as the original in deck, so that could be considered hypocrisy. (But we both know OG Genesis sucked on release!)
I do agree about the Hand Rip needed a limit, but a HOPT wouldn’t be enough to stop decks from going “oh no… anyways”. Maybe a soft OPT would work better?

    • @bubbasgotback431
      @bubbasgotback431 Před 3 měsíci +2

@@RedDragonForce2 I meant in general don’t make cards with the effect that read “always treaded as” and instead always specify where they are treated. I just used one of your cards as an example, but my point applies across the board. I’m not a fan of needlessly restricting deck building, regardless if you would actually play the original card or not.
For Reborn I was kind of saying that making it have such a large body (it even gains attack) kind of makes it more difficult to out than it needs to be. Most decks could out it early on, but that becomes significantly harder the longer the games go on and your opponent has to waste resources to out it every turn and I have a feeling vampire decks would be a control strategy that prefers longer play anyways.
As for the hand rip yeah I think a soft OPT would be fine. It compounds if you have multiple copies, but it doesn’t quickly become a Maxx “C” where it punishes special summoning too much.

Why does he Summon zombies from the backrow when outside of specifically Snake-Eyes and Vaylantz, Pushing monsters into the S/T zones is basically non-existent and the archetype has no monsters who put themselves there natively?

⚪️The Level/Rank/Link thing is to help tie the card into the OG Vampire Genesis’s summoning condition of needed the level 5 “Vampire Lord”, and Rank/Link 5+ are meant to be future proofing in case such a card IS ever made…
⚪️Meanwhile more and more archetypes as of late have begun to experiment with plopping monsters in Spell/Trap zones (either for their own benefit or to hinder their opponents)… This card letting you special summon from those zones allows Vampires to make use of the former and fight off the latter.

@@ButFirstHeLitItOnFire I feel like I get what you're trying to say here, but more-so to be specific, I fail to necessarily see how this portions into Vampire's actual strategy, or patches the holes that exist in it. Think of it like this; Ascendant as described here doesn't really interact at all with any of Vampire's strategies. It feels like you slapped together a vague approximation of good-sounding effects and as a result it feels scattered.
Take for instance, what does this card do? It has a smattering of conditional protections which are reliant on discards to function, worse still, they're reliant on super-types (Monster/Spell/Trap) of which, your most common and desired outcome will be Monster, since that's your biggest card-type. What you get for that trouble is a big beat-stick that acts as a budget Spooky-Dogwood for Vampires, which does help their life-cost for sure, but Vampires usually aren't losing because they pay life points, but because they lack protection, and interaction, this card provides one of those things, but only to itself, and slowly at that. Keep in mind it won't gain any of the protections until its effect resolves, meaning that if your opponent really wanted to out this card for some reason, they can just respond to the attempt at protection and destroy it before it even gains any protection effects, at which point you're out a card for your trouble.
Making it a weird tuner is certainly odd, but to me, all that really says is that it wants to make Exactly Baron by Tuning Retainer, an actually usable boss monster who can do basically everything this card wants to do and more. Hell it even clears your monsters trapped in the backrow by actually popping them, a versatile effect which can get your zombies back in the grave to be revived, rather than revived off of the worst condition of having to discard a trap for something that most of your vampires already do. It certainly *sounds* okay to future-proof a revival effect against a new removal-type, but given that you've placed so many reactive protections on it, it just has no focus. It's not really an extender, because it's revival is on a card-type that you run the least of. [Addendum, I guess you can also make PEP by Tuning Ghost, but again, I feel like we should be making support that isn't just a bridge for a better, out of archetype boss monster]
Spell discard is overly convoluted, but probably the closest to actually having a home. There's a problem though. If this card "Activates" effects from deck, then it cannot use Vampire Domination, which is the Trap you'd most want to use, as it's interruption the deck lacks. If it Copies, however, then arguably it might not be capable of doing domain, which given how tight the deck is on normal summons, is one of the effects you'd want, especially because it's the card (With Domination) which already solves the life-gain problem that your monster-discard is trying to fix. Regardless to say, all this is rather convoluted for a card that could simply say "Negate and destroy" and be infinitely more usable for the deck as opposed to having to keep your spells in hand to fuel an interaction point that would still put Vampires at a whopping 2 in-engine removals, 3 if you have a relevant Tribute, Ghost in grave, AND Zombie world.

Here, let me shake things up… I’ll simplify, modify and consolidate most of the effects. I’ll condense the LP gain effects into the passive ATK/DEF gain, change the discard of a specific card type into a generic tribute of a card from the hand OR field, made the immunities into their own single applied effect, made the Spell/Trap effect more versatile, and just cleaned up the monster summon effect a smidge (I’m keeping the Spell/Trap zone summoning options, because I have a gut feeling that Konami is going to start using those zones A LOT MORE OFTEN in regards to monsters going forward). And I’ll be keeping it as a Tuner for whatever novelty and utility Vampire Players can get out of it… Let me know right away if it looks any better:

@ButFirstHeLitItOnFire So now that we've addressed the things that were laughably bad, we can move onto the part where it's laughably overpowered. Namely, God this card is doing too much, and would push Zombie, not Vampire, as the best deck. For a single tribute you get: a 3k beater who passively buffs the board, heals incomprehensible amounts both when either player combos or during battle, is a generic extender, reactive near unaffected protections for the entire board, is a searcher, and synchro enabler to boot. This card has no identity. it's just every goodstuff thing you can cram on cardboard. This is 10 year old me's version of a superhero who has infinity strength and is immune to every power because he's that awesome.
I don't mean to rag on you too hard here, but this type of custom card design is pervasive and really doesn't have a good grasp on what makes good strong cards or good support

Something that not only searches the high level monsters, but also floats into their new Field Spell, activating directly from the deck. Vampires as a deck might not see much success but I think they're cool for making use of several mechanics that have often been overlooked (which might be why they don't succeed much), and they managed to incorporate a lot of vampire's properties in stories into the gameplay with them.
The LP costs on effects creates a "live fast die young" aggression because you simply cannot sustain a duel that lasts more than a few turns despite having as much monster recovery as zombie support provides, that is until you play Vampire's Domain or some other source of LP gain. Even then with Domain your LP gain is in the form of lifelink, so despite the extra breathing room it affords you, you still need to attack often to offset your effect costs. Imo it does a good job of representing not just the vampire's bloodsucking, but the hunger and the frenzy of starvation that drives it.
The creature stealing covers both vampiric "charm" tropes and vampiric conversion depending on the effect in question (e.g. the reanimate theft on Frauline would be conversion, while Fascinator's steal is a charm), and then there's Vamp with it's relinquished effect that functions as another type of bloodsucking/ charm rep.
The Xyz having exemptions from level requirements for opponent's monsters used as material is a cool mechanic though I'm not certain what the flavour tie in for it is.

We're talking about arch-fiends, they play everywhere but in my opinion they don't really have their own topic. They split into chess archfiends who are just plain bad. The Red Dragon Archfiends are basically a theme but do not exist as an independent deck. And then the other archfiends who shift a little and are present in the field.

The bleed effect became counterproductive to boot. It was that counterproductive that Konami made the bleed turn into walking Monster Reborns.
Sucker also made them synergize even better with Zombie World.

Zombie Vampire also sees use in my blind second rank 8 deck. Its already pumping out 8s with Kaiju/Slumber, Alpha, Bigfoot+Thunderbird, Orochi, etc. Just Change of Heart and overlay whatever I stole. Then rank up to Pain Gainer, Sins, swing with a 4k beater, then add Zeus. Too bad the rest of it isn't very viable.

1:44 Idea for a Vampire Lord retrain:
    _Lord of Vampires_ (DARK)
    Level 5
    Zombie/Tuner/Effect
_You can normal summon this card without tributes while you control a Field Spell or face-up Continuous Spell/Trap that mentions Zombie or “Vampire” in its name or effects. Cannot be targeted for attacks or opponent’s card effects while you control a Level 4 or lower Zombie monster. If a Zombie monster you control inflicts battle or effect damage to your opponent: Declare 1 card type (Monster, Spell, or Trap); your opponent sends 1 card of that type from their Deck to the GY. Once per turn, while this card is face-up on the field or in the GY, during your next Standby Phase after a Zombie monster in your possession was destroyed and sent to your GY by battle or an opponent's card effect: Special Summon it from the GY._
    ATK/2000 DEF/1500

I have a vampire deck and I have fun with it. Mine has a mix of zombies such as mezuki, uni-zombie, and pyramid turtle so it is more along the lines of a zombie deck with vampires added. I do admit there are two main flaws with the archtype, the normal summon condition on the larger monsters which hampers a deck born to special summon from the graveyard and the high life point cost for the effects. If cards read special summon from the graveyard they would still be difficult to play but not as bad. Also I have found that fraulein has some synergy with mahaama, but in a vampire deck its cost is too great.

Vampire, dragon n spell casters were my favorite archetype, but the design change still bothers me since almost all dragons are humanoid, I can't even remember the last time I saw a vampire card, spell casters are still hit or miss design wise for me

Vampire player here. I had fun with the deck at locals and even won a few tournament matches (and lost a few more). I’ll add my two cents here. One of the deck’s major issues is its gimmick of sending cards from the opponent’s deck to grave. In the current game this tends to help the opponent win faster.

I'd like to see you review Traptrix.
It's my personal favorite Deck, though it feels more like a rouge deck, and not really a failed deck... but that might be my bias talking.

In Master Duel I've played Vampire, Fur Hire, currently my best deck is traptrix, Six Samurai deck in real life.
They aren't overly consistent against metas but damn lower tier decks are just so fun to play when they can work. I have a amazing replay of using Vampire to take number 77 against a D/D/D deck and wipe thier entire front row of monsters.

Let's not forget the unofficial member that was really fun: Patrician of Darkness. It's a vampire creature that doesn't have Vampire in it's name. It does, however, have all the other design synergies, such as cape, pointed teeth, red moon in the background, level 5 with 2000 attack. It also comes with a decent field control ability in that you control the target of your opponent's attacks.
Also: Frow(rhymes with cow)-line. German prefix with the same use as "Miss." Her name is Miss Vampire

Could make some interesting interruptions like an ash counter that negates a card’s effect in the GY and field and then immediately special summons it to your side of the field.
I think they need something that adds a bit more power and a bit more reliance on LP usage to work. Maybe an archetypal “target one monster your opponent controls, that monster’s name is now Vampire Sire” or something.
To be honest, I’m spitballing here. I know it’s missing something but I can’t put my finger on what.

    Name: Vampire Circular
    Rank: 4
    Attribute: Dark
    Type: Effect Monster
    Attack: 0
    Defense: 2000
Card Text: When this card is normal summoned apply one of these 2 effects.
    1) Send a "Vampire" monster from your hand or deck to the graveyard and special summon a rank 4 or lower monster from your graveyard to an adjacent monster zone.
    2) You can normal summon as many "Vampire" monsters as possible up to the number of monsters your opponent controls.
You can only use one of these effects once per duel.

all 3 legacy support in past sets had one, they are literally printing custom cards at this point, cause they saw, if you print a garbagae set nobody buys it. So every set no has the one meta defining stuff or its poop. just look at next set, we are getting an archtype that can push 35k battle damage in a turn, and will be all secret/ ultra.

Okay I have designed 6 cards for the deck. One monster, four spells, and one traps. The monster is a searcher that can reveal itself in hand to send a Vampire card from your deck to your graveyard by paying 800 life points. This is a quick effect. When you pay life points you can immediately normal summon it without tributing. When summoned it will the set a Vampire Spell or Trap card from your deck. The back row all have effects that grant advantage when you pay life points and when sent to the graveyard by the effect of a Vampire card lets you add them to your hand by paying 800 life points. Once the deck pays 8000 or more then they can special summon up to 6 monsters from either players extra deck and or graveyard ignoring their summoning conditions as Vampire monsters. Is it good? Perhaps it is too slow. But the support I designed was meant to give the deck a better win con and give the deck more consistency.
