Introduced my kids to this show. They both still love it but for my daughter who is 17 now it's her go to anime no matter what. She still gets excited when the music plays. Her dream is to visit conantown. I hope she does it would truly be her best day ever. I hope I can go with her and see her excitement
I watched the anime when i was 2 years old
I really feel sorry for today's anime fans, with their short attention spans, who have never given Detective Conan a try before now, and now because of the length of the series, they are hesitant to give it a try. I grew up when anime was an extremely rare treat if found on TV airwaves in the USA, so I gained a great appreciation for a good anime series whenever I found it. I fell in love with the Detective Conan manga and anime in the mid-2000's when I discovered it at the bookstore I worked at, and have followed the series ever since.
I agree with you that the earlier episodes were really the best. The series had a different feel back then. The art style has changed over the years, too, of course. I think one of the reasons why the modern episodes have such a different feel is the decision the anime team made over the years to "sanitize" the murders, AND to modernize the color/lighting scheme of the anime. I REALLY wish the anime team would begin a gradual change in style to return more to the look the series had around the early 2000's. They could keep the cleaner, modern anime techniques, but return the slightly darker, noir-ish color/lighting scheme, and not be afraid to show the blood at a crime scene, etc. Oh, and bring back the jazzy background music the series had in the early years, too!
In spite of the way the series has changed over the years, I still love it even in the modern episodes, because I have put time into getting to know and love the characters and their relationships with each other, as well as the fun of watching the mysteries, and trying to figure out who did it, etc. The episodes when the Main Plot appear are savored treats, but if you watch Detective Conan ONLY for the Main Plot, you will miss out on the heart & soul of the series.
I think one more bit of info on the creation of the series can help today's anime fans understand why the plot moves so slowly, and why is the show still going, etc. Gosho Aoyama himself was surprised by the huge popularity of the series when he first began. He never expected his series to become SO popular in Japan, and to have such staying power. The series' popularity in Japan is why the plot moves so slowly, and why it hasn't ended yet. It's the same with The Simpsons in America still being made, even though that series began in 1989. Anyone can watch an episode of The Simpsons from 20 years ago or today, and you won't miss anything, or be in the dark about the plot, because there is no overarching plot. It's just an animated sit-com, so as long as it's popular and profitable the creators will keep making new episodes of that series. So it is with Detective Conan. But Detective Conan DOES have an end goal, and Shinichi/Conan has enemies to battle against, so people get impatient for a story resolution. I think if people who have not tried Detective Conan yet go into the series understanding that the series has become something of an institution in Japan, it will help them to have some perspective about the length of the series.
Newbies should try the series for themselves, watch the first couple of seasons and see if you can't help but get hooked. Then at that point, they can decide if they want to jump around and only watch "the important episodes" or just go at their own pace to watch the series, binge a little, give yourself a break, then binge-watch again when you get that hankering for a good mystery series. Before you know it, you'll be caught up to the modern episodes, and yet you'll find yourself still returning to watch a particularly memorable mystery (or arc) from the earlier years of the series. Guaranteed.
I think detective conan is a series that can take different ways of watching if people want to, specially if you want to watch it for the first time today with so many other anime right now. That's why I wanted to explain a little about the dynamic of the show and how it works.
Just like you I have followed this series for a long time and back then I just to watch every episode not minding if it was main plot, regular case or filler, just enjoying the cases and trying to solve the mysteries.
The only episodes I think don't matter are the fillers, so that's why I still think the best way of watching is simply watch all the canon episodes, because even if a lot of episodes are not related to the main plot, they are all important and make you care for the characters and understand their roles in the story. Binge watching and taking breaks it's the way to go!! haha, the show certainly makes you want to go back.
Even though the fight with the black organization is tecnically the goal and the whole point, it's clearly not the heart of the series.
I agree with you buddy, today's kid don't even know this masterpiece. I'm 25 now and i eagerly wait for Sunday to air episode.
Its like one piece. People dont watch it because its "Too long", which is a lame excuse in my opinion.

Really nice summary of the episodes, and I agree earlier cases felt a lot more grisly and dark. I also liked when the BO was more ominous - now, Conan just has some many allies/rats in the org that it doesn't feel as threatening. Anyway, on an unrelated point, have you watched Kindaichi/Detective Academy Q? If so, I'd be curious your thoughts on those long ish running traditional mystery series too.

It's one of my favorite shows. The main story is good too. You can easily binge this series.
So I changed my strategy a bit. Instead of going blind. I decided to just read the wikipedia page of the detective Conan. It basically is the summary, it mentions a lot about the characters which I feel should be enough to get the basic outline of the show.
What do you think? Is this sufficient enough?
You mean for watching recent episodes? It's totally fine to read the descriptions of the characters to get the idea of their roles in the story, I would still recommend though to watch the first episodes and the ones that new characters appear but it will depend in what you are interested in watching...

Thanks 😄 I used to watch the show years ago before I found out about anime filler episodes. I started thinking that the show was one of those where the episodes are all stand-alone and the main plot doesn't progress, and ended up giving up on it. It popped up in my mind again a few days ago, googled it and found out the plot does develop. With you recommendations, I'll definitely go back and watch it 👍

Decided to watch every single episode of Detective Conan, even the filler, because they're just fun. I'm currently on episode 553, took me like a year and a half. It can get slow for sure, but I still love it.

I do kind of an opinion that in one of these days it should finally reach an end. I very much like the anime and would love if there was some kind of resolution. Not one character getting older and not one major change in other characters' lives means a bit of a bore and tedious repetition. If they can end or sum it up nicely it would be great. Because with so many episodes aired the Conan friends are sure to graduate and realise he's not growing in his height or anything and that should be some kind of a question for everyone. The kids would at least be 1-2 grades up since the beginning. Plus there would obviously be more development with the drug that turned him shorty either getting successful trial or maybe an ability to grow and revert back to his original size with it when he pleases. Anything something that makes it more interesting.

Detective Conan the least popular in America sadly I didn’t into the series til the author of one piece congratulated him reaching volume 100 and I decided to watch it and damn this is great and damn this is so underrated in America like Doraemon and crayonchin I think the reason is the lack of availability compared to one piece where episodes and manga are available to the public,thanks for making this video contoki

I dont think saying "Skipping episodes" to ppl.... I think you shouldnt shoo them away from the fillers... Fillers allow ppl to understand and fall in love with the characters... I don’t watch the anime because it does a disservice to the beautiful artworks in the manga. Anime production are often fragmented, split between studio and even smaller teams for each episode, so the animation is often underwhelming, sadly Conan is the prime example of this, even some of the movies suffer the same deal. That is the reason why Berserk never has a good anime adaptation, simply because the manga is so beautiful, tackling the animation is extremely hard and has lead to disappointment. The opposite is also true for Attack on Titans, the manga’s pre Marley arc is poor in art quality, that is why animation supplements the awesome story so well, leading to its success.
Another thing with Conan is the sheer volume of the series. You would save a lot more time reading the manga.
