Scott, I’d go to a welding shop and get them to weld in the aluminum up top where you cut out for the a/c. Probably be just as strong. I’m north of Ft Worth and yes it is hot. Good luck, really enjoy the videos
Interesting video, Scott. That Packout System is nice. It seems very versatile. I've been contemplating what to do with the space inside the Rack Pack Tower on the back of my Camino 88. I can imagine using it for hanging coats, etc., in the winter months but I think the space would be more efficiently used with drawers and shelves most of the time. The Packout System would let me customize the space on the fly for any given trip. I think you've just provided my solution. You and your channel come through again! Also, fascinating results from the temp gun. I always knew black was warmer but I never realized how much. Growing up in the 70s in Dallas with vinyl seats in our cars, I remember so clearly trying (and failing) not to burn the back of my legs whenever I got in the car during the summer months. My mother would hang a towel over the steering wheel so she could touch it. Our first cars didn't even have AC. Hard to imagine now. Of course, summers weren't quite as hot then either.

Scott, what about making a box for a window AC with heatpump and mount it where the water heater is? It requires making a bigger hole in the side, but eliminates the concern over the water heater opening. Make the box so it sits almost all the way inside the camper with airspace so the outside vents stay outside and the inside vents are near the edge of the workbench depth. It would let the water drain outside, keep the hot air outside and the cool air inside. Just a thought....
That's a great idea! I have considered this, was thinking about a Mini-Split. That could work, however, I would also need an additional fan running to help circulate the air. I guess I'll have to google window A/Cs with heatpumps. I do have a "Roof Curb" on order to try installing on the roof. When I finish typing this, i'll go research some window units. Thank you!
For your a/c, the way you explained it, is what I would do, but add a cross piece in front of the a/c to tie the 2 sides together. But other than that I think you have a solid plan for it. I don’t know if that boosts your confidence or not, I would execute like you said!

It's already insulated, and since I move around a lot, a fold out solar shield would be kind of a PITA. I have some parts on order that should solve my issues. I'll do another video when I get it all sorted out.

We sold our Cirrus and are living in a 5th wheel now. I took a break from CZcams for a while to handle some transitional stuff. I'm just making videos about what I do. I don't really have a vision or direction for the channel, I'm just doing whatever I feel like doing :)
Why not leave the platform and cross bars where they are? Make a platform to mount the AC on top of the cross bars. Then extend a tube up from the roof hole to the elevated AC unit to channel the air.
That is my current plan. I learned from another commenter that its called a roof or A/C curb. I found on that will fit nicely and it's coming in a couple of weeks. It should work, based on my mental math. I'll have a video about it when the time comes.
So you have all that because you are a roving handyman or RV tech? Is that for your job? I like that modular system, very flexible. I would maybe duct your air cond output to the ceiling and then put a 60 degree fanned vent.
Exactly, it's still in the works, but that's my direction. Packout is great, I'm still fine tuning it, but have been busy with other projects for the last couple of weeks. I'll explain more in future videos.
Other than the vent fan on the AC Discharge of the cabinet the AC is mounted in have you looked at adding ventilation to that cabinet? There isn’t a lot of discharge pressure on wheelie AC units unless you create ducting. In the meantime of finding your permanent solution I would try take the panel off the box it sits in. Cool set up though for the trailer.
I know what you are talking about. With or without the panel, it stays the same temp. Also, even though the intake and exhaust are ducted outside, for some reason, the unit still create a slight vacuum in the trailer, so I always have fresh air coming in. Everything is sealed up, so I'm going to guess its due to internal leakage. Not worth fixing, I just need to replace it. Still struggling with sourcing parts and finding a "perfect" solution.
@@Stonyboot dumb question but did you clean the filters on the portable AC? I've seen some floor units that have 2 filters on the back side, a top and bottom separate section.

Is this trailer insulated? That might be your issue on the cooling. Also, where does you portable AC vent to? We have a portable AC unit and it cools our 14x14 bedroom down to 70 degrees in the heat of the summer…we live in OK. You might consider shading the trailer somehow like 8n a carport if that’s an option.
The trailer is insulated, about 1 inch of foamboard. The A/C is vented for intake and exhaust under the trailer. It's not perfect, but it's pretty good. A car port isn't an option and its been in the 105-111f temp ranges, so I'll need to oversize my cooling to keep up with the heat. It's just a work shop, so I'll have to live with some heat, but the current setup isn't really workable during the summer months. I have a few ideas, but havne't had time to focus on them. I'll have an update when I get something solved.

I looked at 12v-24v units. My problem is the cost and power supply. I have no desire to build a typical RV power system in the trailer and while trying to find a 120v to 12/24v comverter, the prices started to shoot up. So, I'm trying to stick with a traditional roof top AC or minisplit. Another commenter suggested a "A/C Curb" and I was able to find something that might work. I'll keep yall updated.
Milwaukee makes the 3-tool broom holder for the Packout wall mount system for that stuff by the door

That was my first thought, but all of the local places are 6-8 weeks out, by then, It will start cooling down.

You can always install a mini split with a cassette the no hole in ceiling plus it is AC and heat

Would be better and cheaper investment to install insulation. Also a fold out panel to relect the sun on the south side and the roof would help

Have you considered using a curb for your AC unit to sit on. It would raise it above your roof rack system.
