One of the shortest #1 hits, but a great one. Lead singer Alex Chilton was just 16 or so.
No wonder he initially looked so intense - a typical teenager of the day.
Wow, damn that's Alex Chilton? Now I know who that Replacements song was talking about.
Really? I had no idea! Cute!
Omg I just heard Joe Cockers version of this yesterday and thought somebody needs to react to the original, turned 5 the year this came out and I totally fell in love with it, when I was a teenager I bought a K- TEL record just for this song lol who remembers K-TEL records lol...♡
Alex Chilton was the lead singer. He was also in the band Big Star.
He was iconic. The Replacements have a song called Alex Chilton.
He was 16 years old when he recorded this hit. The live Joe Cocker cover is pretty awesome 👏 too
👍👍👍 For the Joe Cocker recommendation
Thanks for that tip. I love this song and will check out Joe Cocker.
"Cry Like a Baby" and "Soul Deep" were good also.
Ah! Cry Like a Baby! Haven’t heard that in too long.
Exactly what @graciesmom said! ⭐️
Soul Deep is a great song.
And of course, there's ''Sweet Cream Ladies, Forward March''...
This is such a long time classic! The singer was just about 16 when he sang this song, wow, what a voice for a school kid. He seemed to be shy and uncomfortable with the lip singing.
Try another school kid from the 60’s with a big soulful voice: Stevie Winwood, you just reacted to one of his later solo hits.
In the mid 60‘s he was the singer of the Spencer Davis Group, and their first #1 was Keep on Running. Just wow. You might have heard pieces of this song in ads or movies.
OMG - This is it Alex Chilton the lead singer for the Box Tops. He went on to form Big Star (Gotta check them out) which was a huge influence on most 80's bands including The Replacements (who you have to check out). Alex Chilton was God.
1:30 I love the cheesy grin the keyboardist gives the camera. "Hi, Mom!"
I only know this song because my mom would sing it all the time. I didn't hear it for real until I was a teen in the 80s. And then, of course, I heard the song about the singer called "Alex Chilton" by The Replacements in 1987. Alex was in a great, if unsung, band in the 70s after The Box Tops ended called Big Star. RIP, Alex (and also to his songwriting and performing partner, Chris Bell).
Yeah.....NO internet....NO cell phones!!! You wanna long distance it you had 2 choices. Letters or pay big coin for a?long distance call. Nicely done J. Love this song
so excited to see you reacting to this! Alex Chilton was such an important (if too-often overlooked) figure in American music history. After the Box Tops he went on to cofound Big Star (with the late great Chris Bell), who were extraordinarily influential, though also criminally overlooked at the time. He then went on to have a strange and wonderful solo career until his untimely death in 2010. There's a terrific documentary about Big Star called "Nothing Can Hurt Me" that gives an idea of how brilliant they were.
I always thought of this song as a soldier writing to his lady during Vietnam. Great song!
I remember this song, it's wonderful that you react to so many songs that have slipped my memory sweetheart. What I like is you can understand every word he is singing though I think that was cut short. It is a great song and the band plays beautifully too. God bless you all love hugs and peace Mary-Ellen UK
This group was often seen as the first, major blue-eyed rock band. Today, you have featured a solo woman artiste for the first time in a while. Since you're on a roll here, you must look at one of the most award-winning female soloists of the 20th century, Shirley Bassey, who sang the title songs to early James Bond movies, and the very sultry Big Spender.
This song was popular with the DJs on the top 40 stations. It was played several times a day.
I have been waiting for this, I saw these guys do this song at a car show in Fort Worth, Tx in 67, at the end of the song the drummer did a solo that lasted for several minutes, it was so energetic I thought the guy was gonna have a heart attack.
The keyboardist always makes me smile on this one. They all had to have felt silly pretending to play their instruments for the video, so he just has fun with it and almost cracks up the singer in the process.
Loved this and Cry like a baby.I had the 45 record.I was 17 ! Best wishes from Scotland.
Alex Chilton was sixteen when he recorded this vocal. He went on to form an important (but under-appreciated) band called "Big Star." You should check out "September Gurls" (sic), "The Ballad Of El Goodo", "In The Street" (a cover version was used as the theme to 'That '70s Show') and "Thirteen" by Big Star.
Chilton also produced the first album by The Cramps. The Replacements wrote a song about him entitled "Alex Chilton." It's fantastic, and you should definitely react to it. (Almost that entire Replacements album, "Pleased To Meet Me," is worthy of your attention, actually. It's one of the finest albums of the 1980s.)
He might have been serious. Or he might have been stoned. It WAS the sixties. Lol.
I think they might have been trippin' a bit. 🤣😎
For Sure!😂👍
His eyes suggest the latter
LSD is a helluva drug.
yer boy is FRIED. not santana at woodstock fried, but he's NOT home right now
More great Box Tops songs: Soul Deep, Cry Like a Baby, People Gonna Talk, Neon Rainbow
Yes-Cry Like a Baby for sure
Yep, Soul Deep!!!
Hi, you have as much knowledge as myself. Love to communicate with someone like you. I love love Neon Rainbow, Soul Deep. I met her in Church, Sweet cream Ladies and of course Cry like a Baby. May Alex RIP, sure brought much joy. Also compliments to the band a big part of his success.
YES ,The songs from the 60's were simple but had great feeling and ❤️ in them !!👍💜
The lead singer is Alex Chilton. This was a hit when he was still in high school. He went on to be very influential with a later band called Big Star
He was 16 in the video
@@gerryd1953 he was 16 when the song came out. This video was actually shot in Jan. 1969 so he had just turned 18 a month prior.
Damn he sound and look alot older ngl
The Box Tops were an excellent band.Check the later Alex Chilton group (the singer here) , Big Star, because they were even better, one of the best rock bands ever, and probably the most underrated
Thanks for playing an absolute classic. This is the sort of song you’ll still be playing 40 years later
He was serious because he was 16 and was probably crapping his pants. Alex Chilton is a legend to those who know, and a shadow to those who don't.
Can't imagine being on national television at 16 trying to sell a lip synching as a live performance
I love this song so much. I completely forgot about it and woke up with it in my head this morning. It was the best. It's like seeing a good friend you haven't seen in forever. I just makes your heart sing😩💖
Lead singer is the great Alex Chilton. The Box Tops, and Big Star. One of those unique voices.
When I was a kid, this was a favorite tune to play on diner booth jukeboxes. Still love this so much. Alex Chilton. 💜💜💜
I’ve been listening to 60’s my entire life. It was the decade before I was born. When I was a teenager in the 80’s there was a radio station called, Oldies 92.9 that lasted all through the 90’s and all of a sudden it was gone. I used to listen to it a lot. I can remember some of these old songs playing on the radio when I was really little. Our house had built in intercom system and radio. I remember hearing these songs while we were swimming in our doe boy pool in the summertime..
Hopefully this will lead you to Alex Chilton's next band, Big Star. Hugely influential on bands like REM and The Bangles. Songs to try: September Gurls, Back of a Car, and In the Street.
Ballad Of El Goodo is to me their best song
Saw this band just last year on Labor Day weekend at the Texas International Pop Festival (50th anniversary of the original event). Alex Chilton had already passed away, but 2 of the original members were on stage. Fun show! They played right before Chicago took the stage, one of my all time favorite bands!
I knew the dude who wrote this song. RIP Wayne Thompson
Me too
He was just 16 when he made this. This was a very popular song!
Two years after the release of The Letter I was in the back of troop truck with other draftees riding back to barracks after a day of basic training. One person began singing this. Than everybody joined in. It was like we were shooting a seen from musical. But it was just teen aged soldiers in training, missing home. Everybody knew the words.
What a great song with a great cool singer.
Wow, thanks for a great reaction; really took me back to the days of getting an 8-track installed in my car. Back then, I never thought it could get better than that.
First song I heard after leaving hospital when my dad passed. Ended up finding out that was his and my moms song in the hippie days, great song.
I was 6yrs old but I loved this song.
One thing with music back then was it told a story and was easy to follow along.
You need some more oldies reactions. It's been awhile
Yes it has been a while Jay. Lol... So glad u reacted to some today. Bring back some more older stuff, like u use to. No way I can't be the only one WHO MISSES IT!!!
Saw them at a show and when their set was done they played the music for The Drifters. Fun show. My friend and I were sitting on the stage and offered them a beer.
One of my favorites. Was also done later covered Joe Cocker.
It was a surprise when I saw them for the first time on TV, because I thought they were black.
Alex Chilton was probably about 16-17 years old here. This was their first hit and rocketed to the top of the charts. Considering the previous it is not too surprising that these boys and especially Alex being the singer would have been so very nervous. Trying to lip sync, first 'live' T.V. performance, being a teenager and having the focal be on you since you are the singer and they are looking right at your face, so no way to hide it if you mess up the lip sync. At least the guitarists can angle the guitar back (hide the hand position) like there is nothing wrong. Meant to do it. :) The drummer and keyboardist don't usually get close ups on them, so it is far easier (most of the time) to not look like you missed a couple notes/beats there.
The singer, Alex Chilton, sounded so different when he later sang for Big Star. You should react to some Big Star songs.
It's just one of the shortest hits ever. I was in Junior High when this hit came out. It was a big one. I really loved this song. It was short but it fits the theme. He's at the airport getting his ticket and the plane is about to take off. Then OFF HE GOES :)
Cry Like a Baby - Box Tops, please!
Yes, please react to "Cry Like A Baby"! Lead singer Alex Chilton is hilarious in that video too.
The lead singer is Alex Chilton who was 16 years old when he did this. This was the start of the “Memphis Sound”.....I hope Alex RIP....a real, talent.
Greetings from the Class of 1967. One of my favorite songs.
At first I didn’t know if I knew this song but I do know it
Alex Chilton was great, try September Gurls or The Ballad of El Goodo by his band Big Star.
I was 23 years old when this song came out. I had the hots for a girl named Mary Ann. Can not believe I still remember that!
I'd forgotten this song for decades, when I heard it again all those years later my reaction was very much like yours. Started with "oh that voice", which led to moving in rythym with the beat then another comment about that "raw voice", followed by "ewww", and smiling, then remembering I'd liked it also for it's upbeat energy etc. and found myself commenting about it being too short. So I proceeded to listen to it enough times to make up for decades of not hearing it. Next step was listening to "Soul Deep" over and over again...you gotta give that song "at least" one listen!
This is a Fantastic late 60s song. It's so good! Love it!! ♥️🇺🇸♥️🇺🇸
You are really great, and one of the very few who will do one hit wonders( in some cases) on their channel. There are many hidden gems from my youth out there, and so happy that they are getting recommended to you. Thanks for working with all of us subscribers; it is much appreciated.👍👍
The song had ... a Great "GROOVE"...
I loved the Box Tops back in the day!!
Awwww beautiful!
I LOVED this!
And, yet another great reaction, Jovaughn ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Strange but the man can sing. Song of my youth I was 8. And yes I knew every word.
Loved this song when I was a kid! 10 years old 🤓
Please react to Big Star!!! Box Tops lead singer Alex Chilton formed the band in the early 70s.
React to their songs "September Gurls", "Thirteen", "In The Street", "The Ballad of El Goodo", "Kanga Roo", "Thank You Friends", and "Feel".
Ahhh. You have entered the world of Alex Chilton. Alex smoked a whole pack of cigarettes in the space of an hour before recording.
Alex went onto start another Band called Big Star. Most associate it with the theme song for That 70s Show, but they had some amazing songs such as 13, and ballad of El Godo. You'd enjoy both!!
I enjoyed that review. I like to read the comments as well. Thanks for bringing back these oldies but goodies..
OMG I have loved this song forever. Thanks for doing this! Rediscovering the past is part of appreciating the present. Now you need to do The Turtles, Happy Together!
I think he did that one
@@pamcromer56 You're right! I'd missed it. Thanks for the tip -- it was every bit as good a reaction as I'd hoped for.
Wait a minute! I was 13 when this song came out. Big hit on AM radio in Los Angeles. I know all the words still today. BUT. I've always thought this was a black group! 50 years I've thought wrong. Geesh!
I think this is the shortest song to hit #1
They are miming, so concentrating on trying to stay in sync..and looking a bit nervous....so young and innocent....it was a different world back then...
I'm pretty sure that Alex started smiling in reaction to the keyboardist mugging at the camera - he was probably trying not to laugh
It went number one! Men fighting in the war loved this song!
A memorable song, played on radio for several years afterward!
There is a story behind this particular video. The Box Tops were invited by a German TV station to come out and perform live on TV. When they arrived in Germany the German producers were very mean and cold towards them. The Germans treated the Box Tops very badly. They didn't even have a dressing room for them they had to sit out in the waiting room chairs. The Box Tops were promised they could sing their new hit single but the producers would not let them. The producers wanted them to lip-sync to the song, The Letter. So what you are seeing is the Box Tops are retaliating as they are performing this song live on German TV. Notice the drummer is not hitting the drums properly he's occasionally barely tapping. And the guitar player with a yellow shirt is singing different words to the song as he is not strumming his guitar in sync with the music. All the band members are purposely trying to play off key. And 17 year old Alex Chilton is trying to act as dorky as he can as he is singing. This was how they retaliated against the Germans. And it serves them right. But overall I think this is one of my favorite videos of all times.
Very interesting, thanks for sharing! And now this weird „non show“ is kind of their official video...
This song is the best, his voice is perfect for this.♥️
Yeah great track. Morning stranger, trust you are well!
@@horsefootrot8044 Hi, yes it is... wish it was a little longer but it’s still a good one. Good morning to you, we are almost 6pm here in New Orleans though Lol! Doing well as can be , waiting for this yr to be over & hoping the new one is better for everyone. How’s everything your way? I hope life is treating you well my friend 🤗💖✌🏻
Saw these guys in concert in Detroit very disappointed but then Savage Grace turned up the heat and then CCR WAS GREAT! Good memories around 69or 70
Great song. I was a teen!
Someone already mentioned he was 16 when sang this song. The story about how became the singer for the Box Tops is interesting. They asked him to sing the song with that raspy sound. If you listen to him sing in the band Big Star "Thirteen", "In the Street" and some of his solo songs, you noticed it isn't that raspy. Or whatever the term is.
Oh boy this takes me back 😱😱😱not heard it for years......🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵
There have been so many versions of this song recorded by many artists including Dionne Warwick, Eva Cassidy, Al Green, Joe Cocker, The Rascals, Lamar and Dynamo 5.
The Box tops were a rather obscure band from Memphis during the period when Stax and Memphis Soul was toping the charts nationwide. This was a nationwide charting record. I think it may have approached the top ten, not sure. Too lazy to google.
Muscle Shoals, Alabama also produced much of the great music of that era.
Joe Cocker does an AMAZING cover of this too ☺️
This song totally pops into my head sometimes.
Alex Chilton's band, Big Star, was a huge influence on many later bands. A Big Star reunion of sorts from not too long ago included Alex, their drummer Jody Stephens, and two members of the band The Posies, Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow. It'd be nice to see a reaction to The Posies - they were a band out of Seattle, but not part of the grunge scene. Harmonies like the Hollies and gorgeous melodies. Some great songs are: Suddenly, Mary; Flood of Sunshine; Dream All Day; and Flavor of the Month.
the whole band was trolling this performance
Yes they were, and it's hilarious. 😄
Oh my Jovaughn, great song but even greater version by Joe Cocker. Thanks for this blast from the past.
There's a ton of great Muscle Shoals Music out there and this is just one of the hundreds!
Joe Cocker with Mad Dogs and Englishmen takes the song to a whole other experience. The Mad Dogs and Englishmen album would be a great whole album to react to.
Oh yes, the fabulous 60’s full of delights, this was one big song, way back in the day. A very deep raspy voice, not unlike Rod Stewart. Can’t go wrong, with these golden oldies Jovaughn.
The band looked so excited to be there! Lol
This was the first big hit version of this song, but Joe Cocker's cover is unbeatable. Absolutely iconic!
I remember this song. Didnt remember the box tops sang this
OMG this song brings me back to when my oldest brother went into the army. I was very little 😊👍
Back in this time, many bands were asked to lip sync to their tracks. Many didn't like doing it and would make faces etc while doing it. Sometimes, watching the video just distracts you from hearing the great song. Many record companies required all songs to be under 3 minutes, preferably under 2 minutes, so they could get played on radio. This is a great song, listen again without watching the video.
You’ve got to listen to the amazing version of this song by a group called The Arbors. Incredible cover that takes it in a very different direction! Absolutely the best version.
Oh yeah... Now you HAVE to check out a classic from the 80's. The Replacements "Alex Chilton", must do it.
The year my brother graduated from high school, enlisted into the Army, then received a Dear John letter from his girl (the term for a letter received by a military fellow being told by his girl she was breaking up with him).
Its actually one of the shortest number ones in history. If you look at the keyboard player, he is making the lead singer laugh.
Love this, what a Voice.
Love you Jayvee. You are one of the best reactioners. Peace out brother.
Thank you! I haven’t heard this song in quite a while.
kid was 16 and had the goddam swagger and stage presence of a drunk 40 yr old, and that voice was something else.
This was my favorite song when I was only 16....seems like yesterday
You are on fire 🔥 tonight, loving the reactions
Another 60s classic thanks Jay 🇬🇧
You're on a roll today, another great oldie
