Well it's funny because Cher wasn't the first to use autotune for a vocal effect more than for pitch correction, but I think she is generally credited with the first real hit using it that lots of people heard. Within months it was showing up in other people's work and even in beer commercials, for example. Once again, like she always had been, right on the trend, but in her own way.
It would make for a great reaction but even if not, just for your own entertainment, here is a great clip of Cher on the Sonny and Cher show from when we were little kids and even my younger sister idolized her. She was so young and so cool for the time.
But this one actually features Tom Jones if you've done any of him, also just an iconic figure. But they do this kind of duet together that references all kinds of transitions from old to Modern things for that time, which is even dated now, and there's a bit of Vietnam war protest in there, just lots of stuff. But they are so great together!

A very great reaction 🦁! I see 👁👁 you have reacted to Cher before: If I Could Turn Back Time. Believe was released as the lead single from Cher's 1998 album: Believe. It was written by Brian Higgins, Stuart McLennen, Paul Barry, Steven Torch, Matthew Gray and Timothy Powell. It was produced by Mark Taylor and Brian Rawling. The song reached #1 on the Hot 100, #1 on the Dance Club chart and #3 on the Adult Contemporary chart. It also reached #1 in Spain, Belgium, Greece, Switzerland, Norway, UK, Ireland, Netherlands, Canada, Sweden, Hungary, Italy, Demark, Germany, Costa Rica, New Zealand, France and Switzerland. It was certified Platinum in the US and sold over 11 million copies worldwide. It was Billboard's #1 ranked Year-End Hot 100 chart single of 1999.
The official music video was directed by Nigel Dick. The music video largely revolves around a woman who is in the club looking for her boyfriend and is heartbroken when she sees him with another woman. Three official remix music videos exist for this song. Two of the remix music videos were created by Dan-O-Rama in 1999. Both follow different concepts from the original unmixed music video. Instead of showing the significance of the lyrics the music videos mostly show Cher with different colored backgrounds and people dancing. The two remixes used for these music videos were the Almighty Definitive Mix and the Club 69 Phunk Club Mix. The third video entitled Wayne G. Remix was released by Warner Bros. and the concept is similar to the Club 69 Phunk Club Mix music video. The music video was nominated for Best Dance Video at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards.
The song's vocal effect came from an unlikely source. Cher recalled to Q magazine December 2013: "While we were recording 'Believe' in the UK, I saw Roachford on a morning TV show. He was singing with a vocoder and guitar, and it sounded so great. My producer said: 'You can't do that after you've recorded the song. But I was playing around with the pitch machine and I think I can get something interesting from that...' So he played it and we just smiled at each other. It was exactly what we needed to make the really boring verse... sing".
"Believe" is an empowering song about self-belief and resilience. According to Cher, she was singing in the bathtub, and it seemed to her the second verse needed to be more assertive, so she changed the lyric. "I thought, 'A girl can be sad in one verse, but she can't be sad in two verses'", she told The Guardian. "I just won't have it. So, then I thought of the lines: 'I've had time to think it through. And maybe I'm too good for you'. I should have asked for a writing credit. I was so stupid!".
When the song hit #1 in the US, it marked the longest period between Hot 100 chart-toppers for any act. Cher's last #1 on the chart was "Dark Lady" in 1974. At 25 years, this broke the record previously held by The Beach Boys, who went 22 years between "Good Vibrations" and "Kokomo".
Cher's record was broken by Brenda Lee in 2023 when she topped the charts with "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree" in 2023. Brenda Lee's previous #1 hit was "I Want To Be Wanted" in 1960, 63 years earlier.
Cher was 52 when "Believe" topped the charts in the UK and US, making her the oldest female artist to have a #1 hit in both countries. When Cher broke the record Louis Armstrong was the most senior singer to top both charts; in America he hit #1 with "Hello, Dolly!" in 1964 when he was 62; in Britain, he was 66 when "What A Wonderful World" went to #1 in 1968.
Kate Bush took Cher's UK record in June 2022. When "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)" climbed to the summit, the English singer was 63 years and 11 months.
Brenda Lee took Cher's US record in December 2023. When "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree" ascended to #1 she was 78 years and 11 months old.
The song was featured in the 2009 film 📽: Land Of The Lost (2009).
The song has been featured in some TV shows including 📺: Splitting Up Together ("Go Out The Lights" - 2019), Mr Sunshine ("Hostile Workplace" - 2011), Friends ("The One With Chandler's Dad" - 2001), Will & Grace ("Whose Mom Is It, Anyway?" - 1999), Buffy The Vampire Slayer ("Living Conditions" - 1999), Sex And The City ("Evolution" - 1999) and more.

    Lyrics 🗒:
    After love, after love
    After love, after love
    After love, after love
    After love, after love
    After love, after love
    After love, after love
No matter how hard I try
    You keep pushing me aside
    And I can't break through
    There's no talking to you
It's so sad that you're leaving
It takes time to believe it
But after all is said and done
You're gonna be the lonely one, oh
Do you believe in life after love?
I can feel something inside me say
I really don't think you're strong enough, no
Do you believe in life after love?
I can feel something inside me say
I really don't think you're strong enough, no
What am I supposed to do?
Sit around and wait for you?
    Well, I can't do that
    And there's no turning back
I need time to move on
I need a love to feel strong
'Cause I've had time to think it through
And maybe I'm too good for you, oh
Do you believe in life after love?
I can feel something inside me say
I really don't think you're strong enough, no
Do you believe in life after love?
I can feel something inside me say
I really don't think you're strong enough, no
Well, I know that I'll get through this
'Cause I know that I am strong
And I don't need you anymore
    I don't need you anymore
Oh, I don't need you anymore
No, I don't need you anymore
Do you believe in life after love?
I can feel something inside me say
I really don't think you're strong enough, no
Do you believe in life after love?
I can feel something inside me say
I really don't think you're strong enough, no
Do you believe in life after love?
I can feel something inside me say
I really don't think you're strong enough, no

Cher is the fifth-ranked female artist with the most Billboard US Hot 100 charted singles. She has reached the Top 10 on the Hot 100 at least once during each of four decades: the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, placing her in a tie for second place in that category as of May 2014, alongside Aerosmith, Barbra Streisand, Madonna and Whitney Houston, only behind Michael Jackson. Cher's span of top 10 records on the Hot 100 stretches for a total of 33 years, one month and three weeks not counting the Sonny and Cher hits: "I Got You Babe" and "Baby Don't Go", from "Bang Bang" in 1966 to "Believe" in 1999, placing her in third place in that category as of May 2014, behind only Michael Jackson and Carlos Santana.
Her signature song: "Believe", has sold more than 11 million copies worldwide, and it is the UK's best-selling single by a female artist in history, and one of the best-selling physical singles of all time. Billboard ranked her as the 109th Greatest Artist of all time and the 49th Greatest Hot 100 Artist of all time.
Cher rose to fame in 1965 as one half of the Folk Rock husband-wife duo Sonny & Cher before launching a successful six-decade-long solo career. Shortly after her success with Sonny Bono, Cher released her first solo top-ten singles: "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" and "You Better Sit Down Kids". Throughout the 1970s, she scored the US Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles: "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves", "Half-Breed", and "Dark Lady", becoming the female solo artist with the most number-one singles in US history at the time.
After her divorce from Sonny Bono in 1975, Cher released the successful Disco album: Take Me Home (1979). Her music career revival in 1987 saw the releases of Rock-inflected albums: Cher (1987), Heart Of Stone (1989), and Love Hurts (1991), all of which yielded hit singles including: "I Found Someone", "If I Could Turn Back Time", and "Save Up All Your Tears". Cher reached a new commercial peak in 1998 with the Dance-Pop album: Believe, which featured pioneering use of Auto-Tune to distort her vocals, known as the "Cher Effect". The album's title track became the number-one song of 1999 in the US and the best-selling single of all time by a female artist in the UK.
She continued to make music, with the albums: Closer To The Truth (2013) and Dancing Queen (2018) both debuting at number three on the Billboard 200 and becoming her highest-charting solo albums in the US.
Cher became a television personality in the 1970s with her CBS shows The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, watched by over 30 million viewers weekly during its three-year run, and the namesake Cher. In 1982, she made her Broadway debut in the play Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean and starred in its film adaptation. Cher subsequently garnered critical acclaim for her performances in films such as Silkwood (1983), Mask (1985), and Moonstruck (1987), the last of which won her the Academy Award for Best Actress. She contributed to the movie soundtrack for her next film: Mermaids (1990), which spawned the UK number-one single: "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)", and made her directorial debut with a segment in the abortion-themed anthology: If These Walls Could Talk (1996). During the 2010s, Cher landed starring roles in the films: Burlesque (2010) and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018).
Her achievements include a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, an Academy Award, three Golden Globe Awards, a Cannes Film Festival award, the Billboard Icon Award, and awards from the Kennedy Center Honors and the Council of Fashion Designers of America. She is the only solo artist to date to have a number-one single on a Billboard chart in seven consecutive decades, from the 1960s to the 2020s. Her 2002-2005 Living Proof: The Farewell Tour became the highest-grossing concert tour by a female artist ever at the time, earning $250 million. Aside from music and acting, she is noted for her trendsetting, elaborate outfits, plastic surgeries, political views, social media presence, philanthropic endeavors, and social activism, including LGBT rights and HIV/AIDS prevention.
Cher still performs live on stage in 2024.
      Sonny Bono Passing 🙏:
On January 5, 1998, Sonny Bono passed away of injuries from hitting a tree while skiing at Heavenly Ski Resort in Lake Tahoe. He was 62 years old. Cher's gave an eulogy for Sonny Bono during his funeral service. He was laid to rest at Desert Memorial Park, in Cathedral City, California.

She held the previous US record for Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles over the longest period of time in history: 33 years, seven months and three weeks between her song: "I Got You Babe", which topped the chart for the first time on August 14, 1965, and her song: "Believe", whose last week at number one was April 3, 1999. With "Believe", she became the oldest female artist at the time to have a US number-one song in the Rock era, at the age of 52.
Billboard ranked her at number 43 on their "Greatest Hot 100 Artists of All Time" list.
Her 1998 song: "Believe", is the biggest-selling single of all time by a female artist in the UK. It was voted the world's eighth favorite song in a poll conducted by BBC in 2003-the only American song to be named on the list. "Believe" was placed on the 2021 revised list of Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time".
In 2014, Billboard magazine listed her as the 23rd highest-grossing touring act since 1990, with total earned revenue of $351.6 million and 4.5 million attendance at her shows.
