The problem is while driving, the EPC light turns on and the car runs poorly. The fuel trim becomes rich. It smells like petrol behind the car. This is the limp home mode that allows you to drive the car home.
If you stop the engine, the EPC warning light might go away or stay and after turning the ignition on in the car, the engine keeps revving up and down while in idle. The car cannot be driven at this point and it must be fixed.
These symptoms together with the EPC light and OBD2 scanner or VAG-COM error codes related to the throttle body mean there is an error with the throttle body itself which can be expensive or with the electrical wiring near the throttle body.
At this point it's a good idea to check the electrical connections on the throttle body. Steps shown in the video.

Thanks for that saved the day and a trip to mechanics I wasn't sure whether to use wd40 or some thing else but after watching your video now I am confident to use this product and save me buying electric wire cleaner spray.
Thanks! :) I had proper contact cleaner spray before but when using that, the problem would come back much quicker.
Same for the re-circulation flap motor. I've cleaned that potentiometer because the re-circulation flap was going crazy moving on it's own.
When using proper contact cleaner on that pot it would last a lot less that WD40.
Just let the car cool down a bit and use lots of paper towels/rags :)

Mine was idling normally but jerks when i drive it at low rpms.. turned out to be a faulty egr valve i cleaned it wirh a carb cleaner and worked like a charm.
Egr valve is a throttle body?

hey bro nice video it also worked for me but if you want a once for all solution it would be chaging the trotttle body wire plug vw sent out a bulleting adressing this issue once you rewire the trotle body connector you wont ever have to use wd on the plug ever again

Had epc light too, had the trottle body replaced but after few days the epc light litted again..went back to mech the dam light werent there anymore, test drive a few round nothing happen...hope ur method works. Keeping fingers crossed.
Tried cleaning that throttle body and made it shiny but only messing with this electrical connector fixed it for me.

Throttle body is behind the engine, where the air filter goes to.

Hi friend, I liked the information... look, in my case I don't have any light on the panel on, but when I travel 700km, the pole turns on several lights and almost goes down, but then everything is fine, there are no errors that crazy...🙄🤔
Check coolant level and check that engine temperature does not rise slightly when you press harder on the gas pedal. Should be fixed in up position around 90 degrees.

I have the same problem with skoda fabia 1.2 but my problem is that when drive upp hill and turn to the right then the epc light is on. Maybe its a matter of wires.

Hi I have a 2008 FSI Golf and I have a problem in the light of EPC what name the pieces that you cleaned
It's the throttle body electrical connector. Should be very similar on your car.
If your car has those symptoms, it's worth trying to clean it.
Have you had a problem with no error code on 2002 polo going into limp with no notice. After driving fine for 500 miles plus replaced two cylinder coils and all plugs. Was running great for past month until tonight. Is there a fuel filter. It’s hard to diagnose with no code. Just popped into limp mode
There is a fuel filter but I bever had problems with that.
Coils are always going bad on these cars. 😅
When the coils in mine were bad it had misfire codes in engine scan.

I have a 2004 VW Polo 1.4 BBY engine. Just replaced 16 Valve Stem seals WITHOUT REMOVING THE HEAD and now the EPC light has come ON. Will try this trick and see what happens. VW's can be a pain sometimes, but good Cars to drive.

Worked in my Mk5 GTi today..was unsure but it runs fine now. EPC light gone off and scanned with OBD2 and no code.

I changed the water pump, tensioner pulley and belt on a 1.2 Polo AZQ, and the throttle suddenly is a bit "awkward", but nothing bad, after driving a bit, the epc light came on and the engine just doesn't accelerated, after turning it off and on again, no EPC light and it was like before. I do have a MIL Light on but it is because of the o2 sensor. But replacing the waterpump, belt and pulley can't have anything to do with this? I mean, there is no connection and I don't know why it just began after that! Could it be because of a bad o2? I've read online that that can also be the problem. Maybe someone can help me out. Try to use an obd2 reader to get some error codes if any. I read some comments that it could be a bad solder joint in the dashboard but I think it might be the coolant temperature sensor.

Thank you very much for this video.I bought a car vw polo 1.2 from 2004 and it has AZQ engine.The car had this EPC problem but it was not coming at starting mostly after driving 15-30 minutes epc light turn on and car goes to limp mood.I took the car to mechanic and he told me to change throttle body, throttle padel, lambda sensors and catalyst and i have done everything but problem wasn't sloved at the end mechanik told me to change the engine control module and i have ordered that but while i have ordered that i found your video and i have ordered the throttle body connector and i gave it to mechanic to change the old connector and replace with new.And now the car is not throwing any problem and running like a charm just now i am concerned about only intake temperature because in obd2 it is showing while i am driving the temperature is going up to 80 degree.Is it a bad intake temperature?
Temp in dashboard should be straight up at around 90 celsius. I'm glad you got it sorted but that mechanic oh my... He threw parts(and your money) at the problem too much.

My epc light came on when I was on motorways last night. I didn't notice any change in car and drive to services about 12 miles away and when I turned car of, it started again without light on and I finish my travels of 65ish miles. Confused as to why ?

Either the previous owner put tape over it to hide problems or like in my case, the light just does not work.
I opened it to check if there is any tape in there and the led is just burnt.
I had the buzzer not working also. That one I fixed by replacing rhe burnt speaker with a keadphone speaker. Works perfectly. I have older log videos that will make a nice a youtube video for removing the instruments cluster and fixing the speaker.

When I opened it I just changed the speaker because it was not working.
Used a headphone speaker and works perfectly.
If you really want to do this, be prepared to mess up your instrument cluster. 😬
I wouldn’t open it now unless something really important stops working.
You’d have to remove all the indicators from their motors and those are a pain to put back in the right position.
Without a VAG-COM or VCDS interface, it cannot be done well.
VCDS had a mode that puts each indicator needle to zero-middle.
With that you install them.
If you don’t do that, the indicators will work but showing you the wrong speed/ fuel left/ rpm.
Better leve it or order a VAG-COM interface now if you don’t have that already.
Not sure if I’ll find enough video to upload but there must be something, if I do it won’t be soon. 1-3 months. 😅
Won’t be able to show how to change the LED, because I didn’t feel that lucky and with no spare instrument cluster or car, didn’t want to risk breaking the car too much. 😅

You could use contact cleaner spray for electric / electronics.
It won't last long like that but it's easy to repeat.

I'm having the same issue after cleaning the EGR and throttle body. Do I have to disconnect the battery before cleaning this connector?
No need to disconnect the battery but key should not be in the car/ignition.
@@IONHowTo UPDATE: your solution worked on my Seat Toledo 1M. For those who has the EPC light on after this: try to drive around for a half an hour, if you have climate control try to turn it on for a while , after this you have have a nice stable idle.
Hey so you have to put the WD 40 IN the sensor thing you pulled out right? Not on the outside of it? Thanks for your video, been having the same issue and electrician changed my brake switch to no avail...
Do not put wd-40 inside the reservoir. Only on the connector and connector socket but not inside where coolant goes.
Saying it just to be super clear. This is for the electrical contacts.

So I put WD 40 in the connector like you said and the epc light came on still, but this time it didnt go limp mode completely as much, the acceleration was just really slow but it go up to 70 kmph eventually, though it felt held back a bit. Do you think I just didnt put enough on it? Wasnt the brake light switch cause that was changed too. Im gonna try to clean the throttle body next tho xD
Hi! My car's EPC light came on and the car went into limp mode. First I changed the throttle body but still no improvement. Next I changed the Electronic accelerator unit and now the car only cranks but won't start at all.
Needs a scan for error codes. That could give you some hint of what’s wrong.

It means the engine is running 'rich'. Probably fuel economy is not great too.
There could be many reasons for that. This is one of them.
Could be any of these or more:
Fuel injectors,
Engine wear,
Spark plugs,
Induction coils,
O2 sensors,
ECU.
These are few reasons I can think of is the smell comes from the tail pipe.
Otherwise it's more dangerous if petrol is leaking anywhere from the tank on it's way to the fuel injectors.

mine used to do this until i finally replaced the CAT and the front and rear sensors its been fine for years until recently i tried to rev and pull away and the stupid light came back, i stopped turned engine off waited a bit then started engine, the light stayed off all way home.
My car sometimes does the same, but other times the powersteering light would go on and i would lose powersteering, the clock will reset, and an alarm will beep twice. I then switch off the car and start it again, and everything will be fine again. Do you think this will also fix my problem?

I currently have this problem after accelerating quickly. I've cleaned the connections and now the check engine light has now appeared. It is a 1.2 polo 9n 2003. Any advice is welcome. I've tried to check the codes yet non are appearing. I've ordered a new obd reader so hopefully that gives me more of an indication of what's going on
I had rubber stuck in the throttle body. Any idea where that would of came from?
@@krawzzy2599 rubber in tb is from the Engine Air filter housing or there is no air filter in there.
Check it / have it checked asap.

Same issue with my car, except after a couple minutes, the car falls flat and dies. Also, my Traction Control light comes on in sync with the EPC light, and happened twice after getting a full tank of fuel. Could this still be the throttle body as I've changed the TB/Maf already? Thanks!

@@IONHowTo I got a P2637 code, even though I changed the throttle body, but I'll give cleaning the connector a shot since the connector isn't part of the unit!
Yeah might be a problem with dirt/rust or one of the wires on the connector terminals.

My 2003 elite polo has had exact issue. Revs will go up and down, then EPC light comes on the car is running very rough and eventually just turns off.
Tried this trick and it worked for 24 hrs.
The throttle and accelerator have been changed. Any ideas?

Hi, I used contact cleaner in the past but it was lasting a lot less(2-3 months) than wd40. WD40 makes it go away for 1-2 years maybe even more.
