Cheryl LEE I appreciate you being totally honest and transparent with your beliefs - that is difficult to do nowadays. Before I first arrived, I initially assumed a majority, if not all, Chinese Singaporeans shared your belief and perspective of people of my colour. Despite knowing this, I still chose to contribute as a chiropractic physician to the healthcare needs of YOUR community. Now that I lived here for 3 years and have established friendships with patients and fellow SG comedians, I discovered only a small segment of Singapore shares your perspective! Do you feel that a majority of Singaporeans share your perspective, but too afraid to speak up? Or are you simply representing a segment of the older generation still holding onto to this fear-based assumption of a race they have never befriended personally?

I had the opportunity to visit Singapore years ago. I remember how clean the streets were and how safe it was as well. I played a impromptu, pick-up basketball game with a group of children. They were awed by my moves and playing style. They treated me like a star. For the record, I was not a professional athlete..just a regular guy. They all shook my hand when it was time for me to leave. It remains a memorable experience all these years later!

I agree. Acceptance is the ideal. My statement is based on MY experience living in countries that boasts "acceptance", but also has pockets of EXTREME intolerance (mosque shootings, church shootings, synagogue shootings, gay nightclub shootings). Singapore may not be a totally accepting society, but from MY perspective, I notice that people here can worship in their mosques, churches, or temples with significantly LESS fear of their lives being threatened than other neighbouring countries, or even many western nations (United States, Canada, Germany, England, Poland/LGBT...).
Right or wrong, it's just my opinion, but I feel there are some in this digital universe who might benefit from hearing from the stuff I just shared.

By educating the younger/new generation about treating each other with respect and equality and by passing these values down will we pave the way for a better, brighter future, with more love and less violence.

thats a little too idealistic and unrealistic. While we do learn these things in school, there is a lot of subtle racism going on. I can't recall the number of times my indian classmates got made fun of being darker or even worse, and times my malay classmates had to call out people for speaking mandarin in a group conversation. But thats mostly due to stupid ignorance. However in working life, I feel more people were racist subtly towards colleagues and honestly that shocked me the first few times that happened because they should know better. So even if the young come out singing kumbaya, the sting of working with racist idiots removes those ideals really fast.

We are taught since young to respect people and religions that are different from ours, not to talk bad about each other, especially in the public. We learn about each other religion and what to look out for, what not to do and say with different religion. I think why Brent seems to be enjoying his stay here in Singapore is his open mindset ready to live like a local, and not as an expat. I won't say there is complete no racism in Singapore, because that is fake (and scary), but there is a slight balance because of the multi racial of Chinese, Indian, and Malay here. So please don't mind if any locals look at a black person curiously or ask if you are an Indian, because there aren't many blacks in Singapore actually. As for language, our English may sound weird to foreigners because I will say it is localised with the various languages here too. So please don't be offended if we speak a different sounding English. Each country has their own accent, right? :)
About the bubblegum being banned in Singapore, I always find it amusing and try to explain to foreigners if I can. Yes, bubblegum is banned for sale in Singapore, but uniquely the law doesn't go clear whether a person is not allowed to consume. So yes, Brent explains it clearly in this video.
As for the redlight district mentioned, it is real and there are actually legalised brothels at this area called Geylang. But hey, you be surprised there are many eateries that serve some of the best Singapore food in this area too. But if you are just going in the area out of curiosity, please do be careful because there are illegal prostitutes hanging in the area and are usually protected by triad figures.

Toleration is something saved for untrained animals or someone you are merely gritting your teeth and putting up with with more-or-less-good-grace. Nice interview. I lived there for 8 years (in China and now in Japan also)....and all of my friends, contacts, and interactions were with local Singaporeans. Many of the things he said were true for the first year I lived there. My experience as an international school teacher was very, very different. Living in 5 different places around the island over 8 years and having deep connections in the Singapore community really expands and opens one’s experiences. I used to eat down there around Arab Street....lots of tourists there. If you’re have a chance, check out Dhoby Ghaut, Tiong Bahru, Bedok, and Ang Mo Kio. The thing about the races living harmoniously....observe who is engaged in all of the manual labor around the country (construction, nannies, cleaners, etc). It is true on the surface, but (as with any country) the perspective of the common Singaporean would bring quite a different layer to Singapore’s cosmopolitan nature. And popiah is great too! Teh Tarik is the bomb, diabetes for sure, ha. Keep up the good work...

They are NOT Singaporean but foreign workers here on a limited term. There was a time when Chinese labour was still cheap that many construction workers came from China too. I say, you have scratched below the surface, but you need to look even deeper, for your perspective is still superficial.

There's also the Singapore zoo, night Safari (1st in the world concept) and River Safari, Bird Park, Sentosa island (universal studios, SEA Aquarium, Mdm Tussauds, Life, bungee, zip line, beaches), Gardens by the bay. There's also districts like Chinatown, Little India and Kampong Glam as well.
Best of all, the hawker food culture in Singapore plus all types of other cuisines as well. We are really blessed with amazing food, many of which are US2.5 TO US5 bucks for local hawker food.
More importantly, I hope you get to see what makes Singapore so amazing in terms of good governance and how the government here in Singapore takes care of its people very well on the whole even though it keeps the tax burden low in that very few people even pay income tax and most pay quite low rates. Alcohol is costly - but I drink only occasionally. Cigarettes are costly - I am anti-smoking. I just watched a video about Korea and the people there did not smile...at all. In this video, people are waving and smiling at the camera. Just off the vid alone, I'd say they're super friendly. I have a client there that's literally trying to get all her friends to move there.

Notice the ones looking or in the background have backpacks, bum bags, taking pictures, etc. They are mainly tourists themselves.

To be fair, interview was happening in streets where tourists tend to go so some of the people in shot could indeed have been tourists.
Singaporeans aren't the most outgoing of people and won't just come up to people and say hi etc. They'll usually leave people alone to do their thing, mostly out of respect.
I'm like that too. I like to mind my own business for the most part and concentrate on what I'm doing rather than looking at what someone else is doing.
Sometimes people like to say Singaporeans are cold and unhelpful. But if you engage them in some way or if you need help, someone will be willing to help you. If I can lend a hand, I'd do so willingly without any need for recognition or praise.

mk ii Many people think New York is a very unfriendly place as in people are too busy to be kind or talk to you. They say they’re rude and don’t care. Yet, if you throw a French person in there, they’ll complain about New Yorkers are way too friendly, all with the hugging and smiling and good customer service and personal questions. I guess it’s all about perspective. 🤔😏

guys please don't say that racism doesn't exist in singapore because you haven't experienced it. that's scary and comes from an incredibly privileged perspective. we definitely have taken steps toward racial harmony - however, there's still significant casual everyday racism in our society (as referenced by a 2018 cambridge study if you want me to link it) and minorities (malays, indians, etc) are disproportionally disadvantaged by the high wealth disparity here. don't even make me count the number of times that i've tried to talk to my family about their casual racism towards minorities, only to get shut down. plus, not even a week ago there was a blackface scandal at our top secondary school/junior college, raffles institution. additionally, racist and homophobic effects of colonial rule are definitely still felt by the laws and policies implemented (an article by the interpreter can be linked if you want). i'm not saying that we haven't made steps toward harmony because we definitely have, more than many countries in the world - i'm just asking us not to make blanket statements like "i don't see racism in singapore at all" and erase the hardships faced by many minorities in singapore.
