7 Things To Do in Peru (That Aren't Machu Picchu)

- 7. Sandboarding and racing dune buggies in Huacachina
This hidden oasis provides ample opportunity for adrenaline-junkies and thrill seekers to explore. Just four hours south of Lima, travellers can begin their day by boarding down sand dunes or racing across the desert in dune buggies for a truly exhilarating experience.
6. Explore the Peruvian Amazon
Considered to be less popular than its Brazilian counterpart, the Peruvian Amazon is home to a diverse wildlife population and winding rivers that you need to visit while in Peru. To access the diverse jungle terrain, you can take a flight from the city of Puerto Maldonado with flights leaving daily from Cusco and Lima. And the good news? Tours through the Amazon on the Peru side are significantly cheaper - meaning you can save your dollars for a bonus round of pisco sours.
5. Go deep into Colca Canyon
When in Peru, make time to visit one of the deepest and most spectacular canyons in the world, the Colca Canyon. Accessible from Peru’s second largest city, Arequipa, the Colca Canyon is Peru’s third most-visited attraction yet many hikers seem to skip this impressive site. Don’t make the same mistake as those hikers and add a trip to the Colca Canyon to your itinerary. Also, if you’re still yet to be impressed, the Colca Canyon is actually twice as deep as the United States’ Grand Canyon. See for yourself how it compares.
4. Embrace the serenity of Lake Sandoval
Lake Sandoval is part of the Madre de Dios region of Peru, which is part of the Amazon basin. To reach this majestic site, you can start your hike near Mare de Dios River and marvel at the impressive wildlife including parrots, macaws and other exciting creatures. Once you arrive, you will be greeted by an unforgettable sunset.
3. Taste the mineral-rich salts of Maras
Just outside of Cusco you will find the town of Maras which is held in high esteem across the world for its impressive collection of salt mines that date back to the Inca times. Here, you will find thousands of salt pools that make up the hillside that build an intricate network of channels that feed spring water into the ponds. For a small fee, you can taste the warm water and sample some of the finest salt in the world. The mineral rich salt is great for cooking and is believed to help reduce stress.
2. Walk the streets of Arequipa
You’ve heard all about Cusco and Lima, but what do you really know about Arequipa? This city is filled with charming baroque architecture built from white volcanic stone. Surrounded by breathtaking volcanoes, Arequipa has well and truly earned its place as a UNESCO World Heritage destination.
1. Do as the Peruvians do in Huilloc
There’s a reason why we saved the best until the very end. To wrap up your time in Peru, there’s no better way to experience Peru than by immersing yourself in local culture. Make time for a visit to the Quechua village of Hilloc and learn more about the fine art weaving from the female villagers who have been perfecting the craft since a young age. Then, sit down for a pachamanca lunch where stones and grass are used to cook cuy (guinea pig), fava beans and potatoes using traditional cooking methods. The hospitality and generosity of the Quehchea villagers will leave you feeling humbled and grateful for the experience.

If you are a history geek you can find all these in Peru: Caral pyramids, oldest civilization in America (3000BC); Chavin Temple (1500 BC); Moche Pyramids of Sun and Moon and Lord of Sipan tomb (300 AC richest tomb in America); Nazca Lines and their capital Cahuachi; Kuelap Fortress of the Chachapoyas civilization; Chan Chan (largest city in mud in the world) of the Chimu civilization; Huari, ancient capital of the first empire of America before the Incas; and thousands of other archeological sites.

We couldn't agree more! Peru is an absolute paradise. Give this guide a read to find out more: goo.gl/PNX1NL
Well done! Peru is an amazing country full of adventures. Is my favorite place to travel because we get to eat exotic fruits, increible dishes! We went to Colca and walked 2 hours after the road was blocked...even that was a great experience! Love Peru so much! In the amazons we hike for an hour to find the most beautiful water fall! We almost die! We sing songs, we laugh a lot and discover many wonders in the jungle. Peru is an amazing destination.
We couldn't agree more! Peru is Beautiful 🙌
i miss peru. im half quechua and i always go to sierra to visit my family.
We peruvians even don't know everything about our own country. There's a huge variety of landscapes, climates, food, archeological ruins, cultures, etc.
Every country has neat places beyond the major sites. Northern Peru is really interesting
We agree! Always worthwhile to explore beyond the typical attractions. Check out all of the tours we have to Peru here: goo.gl/hXR4RL
The first city of the Americas Caral is there and the pyramids of Tucume, The Moche Route and of course eco beaches.
So much to do, and such spectacular beauty in Peru. The people are also amazing! I just got back from Peru and created some pretty amazing CZcams videos of my trip as well!
And Nazca lines, for sure.
What a relaxed voice
6 months is not enought for to know all beautiful places of Peru.
Glad to see other people are also posting about non-Machu Picchu things to do in Peru. We just posted a video like that too, including swimming with sea lions. Of course we posted a video of Machu Picchu first though :) Because let's face it - Machu Picchu is truly awesome!
You said it! Sure, Machu Picchu is incredible, but, there's so much more to discover when in Peru.
Where can you swim with sea lions?
This is such a great video to some of the other things to do i Peru. We posted some very different videos of Peru from more of a locals perspective. Well we did also do Machu Picchu because it's really incredible and it would be pointless to not visit such an historical and monumental place if you're going to be in Peru.

Punta Hermosa
Señoritas
Embajadores
(Near Lima)
Or Punta Sal
Zorritos (best beach)
Mancora (most popular beach town)
Good beaches good food great people
Chachapoyas has the oldest city in America the fortaleza de kueve ( not sure if I write correctly) but is going to be the future Machu Picchu is located between the amazon and the lower part of the Andes
Older than Caral at 2500 BC?
What about the northern side of the country, like Tumbes with the Mangroves forest and Zorritos beach, Lambayeque with the Sicán archeological ruins, Pimentel, Eten; Piura with Mancora and Colan; or My dear La Libertad with Huamachuco, Otuzco and Trujillo City?
Trujillo, Iquitos, Huaraz, Caral, Mancora, Pozuzo, Oxapampa, Villa Rica, there are many things to see and do in Peru.
check out Rupac and The Huancaya cascades. What about the Colca canyon, twice the size of the Grand Canyon. You can see the condor fly right over your head.

Seems like tourism is coming back up, for anyone visiting Peru please support local indigenous native owner businesses and Afro peruvian business owners! This is very important to us if you are traveling in Peru. I have seen posts for the support for black businesses and small businesses. If you are traveling abroad (or plan to in the near future) please think of supporting primarily or mostly the indigenous native business owners and Afro peruvian business owners such as the traditional cholitas and cholitos that are street food vendors or have pop up / small shops , and or who are also craftsmen as well, tour guides, dancers, musicians, singers, artists, vendors etc. It would mean a lot from your support to our Afro peruvian business owners community and our indigenous community. I will say that our governments and populations are mostly racists / colorists and don’t support whatsoever these two communities to a higher platform to what they deserve compare to the light skin mestizo Latino / Latina folks (white privileged folks). I would hope that if I write about it to shed more light on this , all I can hope for is for those that decide to travel in the future can think about eating or obtaining some sort of service interest to you think about obtaining it from these two beautiful communities that are the heart of our culture.
If you want to go to places like the amazon, get your travel vaccinations and obviously dont go alone...
Where is Huaraz, Paracas, Nazca lines, Trujillo, Moche route, North Beaches, Iquitos, Chan Chan, Titicaca lake and the Uros????? More of the same in this video Cusco and Arequipa. Boringgggg
