  • In this video, learn how to remove and replace the speedometer in the 8th gen Civic (model years 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011). My particular car in this video is a 2006 Honda Civic LX sedan automatic in case you’re wondering. This tutorial will work for any 8th gen Civic though. If your water temperature gauge or fuel gauge aren’t working, or are inverting (pretty common problem according to the forums, and my problem in this case) then this tutorial should give you the information you need to change it. Using trim tools to get the dash out would be easier, but common hand tools can get the job done. Hope this helps! Don’t forget to comment, like, share and subscribe! Thanks for watching!
    NOTE: Your car mileage is not impacted by switching out this unit. The mileage on your car is saved in the ECU, not the speedo unit. So no worries about trying to finagle the car mileage after you install the unit.

    You’re such a wonderful teacher! One of the best “how to” videos.
    If your speedometer turned on off or dimed by itself, it would be an electrical contact issue. No need to replace it. You could fix it by opening the speedometer casing, put 4 layers of electrical tape on 3 back supports that will touch 3 white round spots on the motherboard. This will create a pressure on the motherboard when closing, and create a constant electrical contact.

    This is a nice video. Very clear instructions and well filmed. In my case I was not able to detach the second piece from the head unit piece. So I had to pull it and the head unit back in one piece. It took some doing, but they released and pulled back so i could get to the speedo. Not sure if I did something wrong, but try as I might the second piece would not detach from the head unit, and I was afraid of breaking it. Anyway, thanks again...

    Great video, thank you! I have a 2008 Honda Civic, and one thing I just found out, if your digital readout begins to fade, and your gas gauge doesn't read correctly (lights go opposite) you may not have to replace the unit. I had replaced mine about a year ago and the digital lights starting going our and fading again. It got me to thinking that the pins or the modular jack that connect to the pins may have built up corrosion over time. I followed the above instructions, removed the unit, then with my thumb on the locking tab, pushed the jack onto the pins and pulled it off, and kept doing that for about 100 times, just to make sure the pins and jack were cleaned off. After about 25 times, I blew off the pins on the back of the unit and blew over the top of the jack to get anything out. After doing this, believe it or not, the readout returned to normal! It must have had some corrosion that built up over time and this seemed to do the trick! To be sure, I drove our vehicle to a concert which was a little over an hour both ways, and the readout didn't fade or change. This may or may not work for everyone, but it saved me from having to buy another unit.

    This is a wonderful how to video. I just replaced my speedometer and it was so simple and quick. No hidden surprises because the video was so detailed. The two 8 mm bolt were hidden and hard to see. Thanks to this video and a mirror, I got to the bolts without much fuss. I bought my speedometer used on ebay and it works perfectly. Be sure to buy the correct speedometer for your car, as mine was a Civic Hybrid, and is different model number than a normal Civic. Check the label on the back of the speedometer.

I would just take a look at the car and see what they seller has to say. Maybe the car was an extra car that has been sitting around for years? I would also Carfax it and check the vehicle history to see if there's any shady business going on. I had an 06 STi that I got rid of in 2018, with 43k miles on it, so....lol. If anyoneis watching this video because their fuel gauge is inverted and not lighting up properly (which is very common on this generation Civic), there is no need to buy a new speedometer the fix will cost you nothing and its so easy a toddler can do it.
    After following directions you can find on youtube on how to remove the speedometer, unplug the speedometer, you’ll see its easy to open, there are no screws just clips all around the speedo that nees to be popped out with a flathead screwdriver, once you pop it open find regular packaging foam with a thickness of 3/4 inch to 1 inch max. Then cut the foam to fit behind the speedometer internals so when you close it the speedo its nice and tight. I figured this out after I noticed when i push the speedometer around the fuel guage area it would work briefly, I realized a little pressure deom behind should do the trick and its been over a year no problems. If you have any questions holla at me.

      @@nukem384 thank you for responding. I ended up having a friend send me a spare cluster for me to test out.
      While it can be plugged in and used, the mileage will be incorrect and will have lights come on for ABS and TPMS (TPMS doesn’t come on my car so can’t do anything about that) Most likely reprogramming will solve that problem!

We put the car on a car hauler behind a U-haul truck and took a trip, the front bumper kept falling loose from the front, and we kept placing it back on, anyway, we dropped the truck at U-haul and we were driving the car back home and the speedometer kept showing faster then we were actually going, it's off by 35-40 mph and is still doing it and we've been home a week. Could any wiring be pulled loose causing the problem? And where do I look first? Before this trip I had no problem with the mph malfunctioning at all. Any insight would be most helpful. I know these are older civic modes, but so it can be possible to swap the Instrumental Cluster to lets say, a SI version? Or even the base model? 1. Is there a way to change the lower cluster I.e temp, rpm etc, if so, what to do?
    2. Will it change the kilometres on the dash once complete
    3. Anything else I should check before doing the job like battery, fuses etc?
    Thanks so much in advance

      @nukem384  Před 6 lety

      got it, makes sense. i haven't really searched on how to turn mileage back on an electronic odometer, but im sure there's info on YT about that. im sure the dealership could do that, but they'll probably charge you an arm and a leg for something thats really easy to do for them.

    • @Currancchs
      @Currancchs Před 5 lety

      The mileage recorded by the odometer is not of the engine, it is of the vehicle as a whole, since the whole vehicle wears out over time (i.e. rust, transmission wear, ball joints, suspension, paint, even wiring insulation!). Nobody is going to roll back an odometer for you because you swapped the motor. Asking a mechanic to do so would result in them either informing you that it would not be legal to do in your situation or angrily kicking you out of their shop, depending on whether or not they thought you were misinformed or asking them to engage in a criminal act and their temperament. Even if they were willing to do it, most wouldn't have the equipment or knowledge to do so. Although the dealer (most likely) could do it, they're only going to do it when you're replacing the odometer with a used one from a different vehicle so that it is accurate or in another special situation.
      To make sure that the resale value is kept as high as possible, keep your receipts for the engine purchase/install and advertise the vehicle as having "315km on the body, 20km on the motor" or similar. If you don't have receipts with mileage to show to a potential buyer, don't be surprised if they don't take you at your word.

    Hi bro
    My speedometer light Is always on even if I lock the car what can be the issue

      That sounds like some sort of wiring issue. You'd need a mechanic for that unless you are good with electrical stuff

    Good info but you didnt give a website to buy a new speedometer (besides going to the dealer).

      I don't believe you can order this aftermarket, so the only place is the dealership unless you find it on the used market like me (eBay). Part number is in the description.

    When I drive >20 mph, two of the lights at the top of the number 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, etc. are flickering and often off.
    Is is likely that replacing the speedometer would fix this problem?
    Thanks.

      That's weird that it only flickers above 20MPH. But yes, I would try this and it should fix your problem.

      @@nukem384 Thanks for your reply. The number “1” doesn’t extend far enough to the left in the display to notice the problem, but the 2, 3, etc., are noticeable. I’ll give it a try. The dealership wants $1500+ for the job, which seems a bit expensive for an 11 year old car.

      @@HeathWatts Lol that's a joke, but not surprising since it's the dealership. I found a spare part on eBay for about $65 and it's still in the car today. Totally worth a try to fix it, and I think it will give the new info. you just gave me. Even the new part from Honda is like $300, so you'd still be saving a ton in labor.

    Good instructions but you didn't have to remove the whole cover. The small bezel surrounding the speedo is the only thing you needed to remove.

      The other covers are on top.... how would you unscrew and remove the speedo bezel without getting the other pieces out of the way?

    Awesome video! * However, if I buy a used speedometer/fuel gauge cluster, won't the problem just happen again (eventually) because the cluster was already "used" ? Or is it better to spring for a new one, which is more expensive but should last much longer? Thanks!

    • @nukem384
      @nukem384  Před 2 lety +2

      I think the cost difference isn't worth it. A new one is like $300 from Honda. I paid $20 for this used one. We still have this car and this same used piece is still in there and working. Much more cost effective to get a used one unless you're planning on keeping your car for 100 years haha.

      Nope. It's plug and play. It's basically just regurgitating info. from the ECU.
