I’m so glad you talked about how some books are harder to read because the topics are so heavy. I feel like a lot of booktubers don’t discuss it and it’s something I experience quite often. This is a great list!
Hey girlie! Just wanted to chime in about your desire to pursue discovering your African lineage. As background, I am a health scientist (I have a PhD in biomedical sciences) and have studied genetics and I think it is great that you are curious about discovering your lineage. Unfortunately, it breaks my heart to inform you that it is impossible to actually pinpoint the exact country (or tribe) your family is from at this point in the technology. Any claims being made that these companies can do this are exaggerations and guesses at best due to the generations of mixing and migrating, and they are just out to make a profit off of the public's ignorance. As proof, I recommended that you do a little digging and research the technology to see the probabilities. And I'm only saying this to you not to disappoint you but rather in an effort to attempt to save you from being fooled to think you're one group when you truly may be from a myriad of groups.
And no, you're not alone in the thought of "the movement" being watered-down by others. I always say is it not possible to walk and chew gum at the same time? We should be able to focus on the numerous plights Black women endure while also understanding there are other issues that others face as well. It bothers me to no end. Sigh....
On a side note, I truly love these types of videos and look forward to when you upload! I always find a at least one new book to add to my TBR. Thank so much for sharing!

Homegoing is definitely a journey. I wouldn’t recommend reading it one sitting, although the story will leave you wanting more. Great book. I plan to read Circe as well along with The Red Tent.

I really loved The Goldfinch! That was my first Donna Tart book, I need to pick up her other novels. Homecoming was really good too! The Diviners and All The Light We Cannot See we are on my list to read last year but didn’t get around to - this year I’m going to tackle the books on diverse spines mug which include Washington Black.

HOMEGOING was very good. I think you'll love it. THE GOLDFINCH is one of my favorite books… but people were divided with it; either they loved it or hated it- I loved it; I hope you'll love it too. ^_^ PACHINKO was also very good- the detail and breadth of the novel was beautiful. Looking forward to seeing what you think of those books! I'm excited to check out WASHINGTON BLACK: you've sold me on it. CIRCE has been sitting on my kindle waiting for me, I think I may actually do better with a physical copy though...we'll see.
From one curmudgeon to another: I feel you re: people jumping on [issue] bandwagons and going overboard trying to tick off boxes (being disingenuous about diversity, if we want to be real). And it's certainly frustrating when one issue is at the forefront being discussed/remedied, and everyone wants to pile on issues, isms and such. I know multi-tasking exists, but some issues and isms need to be talked about/remedied/solved one at a time. You're not alone, Amerie!
I got my DNA tested and the results were astounding. And there is a lot more data available now re: the African diaspora; you may not know the exact tribe, but knowing the region and in some cases, exact countries, makes a huge difference! You're in for a treat. Good luck with your discovery!

How do you choose which books to read? Do you have a specific place where you look up new/popular books, grab whatever catches you eye, recommendations from others, etc? I want to read more but I’m not sure what I want to read. Great video!

I agree wholeheartedly with your thoughts of emotional nihilism brought about by reading books dealing with a particular period of time. I could never really bring myself to read them and even though I feel I should to give me an idea of what life was like back then. I know my frustration and anger would mitigate anything I might glean from the book.
I hope you enjoy those reads Amerie. Pace yourself and don't feel you have to read something if your heart's not in it.
Amerie , you have a great list for 2019! Some I’ve read last year. Circe was a beautiful story, but I also recommend Miller’s Song of Achilles. I loved it just a bit more. Highly recommend the audiobook. Narrator’s voice is perfect.
The Diviners was a lot of fun. Don’t let the size deter you, it’s a fast read. Books 2 & 3 are on my tbr this year.
I hope you do a review for Cloud Atlas. I haven’t read it but I’ve seen the movie a few times and it’s one of my all time favorites.
I LOVE the change to saying "Enslaved narratives"!! I'm definitely going to talk about them in this way moving forward. and I just added Circe too to my Audible TBR. I hope we both enjoy it.
All I Have is a bonafide classic that is on my playlist to this day....

I watched the whole ads just for you boo❤️ I borrowed a book from the library that I’m begrudgingly trying to get through and 2 chapters in. The first story was suspect 😒. It’s called the Best American short stories. Amerie is goals y’all.
I want to note The Diviners does NOT feel like a 500+ page book- stop putting it off girl, it's not as big an investment as you're expecting! :P

I read it in a day (audiobook) It was soooo good. I didnt know it was so long I was so into it!
I also read it as audio and actually love the whole series. There are also a range of diverse characters throughout the series.
I bet I probably have over 50 books that I bought/got was excited to read and then never got around to reading. Many of them are emotionally draining or larger books, so I feel like I have to prepare myself to read them and then I just forget. I love your book review/discussion videos. I’m going to have to pick up Washington Black. I had not heard of it before, but it sounds good.

Homegoing is a GREAT book. It’s heavy in events but it’s such a GREAT read
Brilliant minds think alike! I'm going to be reading Circe (I have the same edition. LOVE the UK editions!) and hopefully Purity. I'm hesitating about reading it because it would be my first Franzen. I think I should probably start with any of his earlier works. I really liked Washington Black but I'll be interested to here what you think of it.the Light We Cannot See is also on my list along with The goldfinch. I already tried to read the Goldfinch and got to page 120 and for some reason quit. Need to get back to it. Pachinko is also on my TBR especially for my big book challenge. The Diviners series is amazing! And the author does give credit to the black community for a lot of the slang and dances. On the diversity rep in this series, I felt the author did an excellent job fleshing out her characters and made them feel very real, while giving us different lenses to view what the 20s was like (one of the POVs is gay, another black, another Jewish, and another that is introduced in the second book is a disabled Chinese character) and the different struggles they face/how they are treated. I also really loved how the series addresses the not-so-glitzy parts of the 1920s (dangers for interracial couples, homophobia, eugenics, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, The Chinese Exclusion Act, the KKK, among others). It's also a pretty quick read, despite its size! 💕
Hey Amerie, this video is synchronicity for me. I am currently learning about the Yoruba Spiritual Tradition called IFA From West Africa, specifically Nigeria in Benin. A lot of the African Diaspora Ancestors come from that region of Africa. Very intriguing books.
Can't wait to hear your thoughts about The Diviners, I finally picked it up in 2018 and even though I'm intimidated every single time I pick up the next installment I LOVE this series

When I listened to your books to read list and your explanations for why you haven't picked some of the books up I could relate. A popular expression you are what you eat I think can be translated to you are what you consume. I find it difficult to consume certain media that I feel might emotionally charge me during certain times. I think it is important to be in the right head space to handle certain topics that might trigger emotional responses.

I just discovered your channel a few weeks ago when it popped up as a recommended channel to see while watching Book Riot's channel. I enjoy watching your videos. I feel the exact same way about enslavement narrative books. I thought I was the only one that felt that way. Good to know that I am not the only one that has that struggle about reading that genre of books. I have a stack of books like you that I have promised myself that I am definitely read THIS YEAR. Franzen is one of those litbro dude authors I don't feel like many people on booktube other than that subset read and love so I would love if you could do a recommendation video on where to start with him and what sort of readers would like his work also most of my tbr is exactly the same as yours so excited to hear your opinions thought the year

I know, kinda weird for a guy to read but I’ve always liked mythology themes and this book is just beautifully written.
I’ve been reading it on and off for the last couple of months when I’m not fishing.
Also just finished American Gods.
If you ever get a chance, read The Many Coloured Land by Julian May, it’s an oldie but very good and I’ve had the books for 30+ years.
Just curious if you use an e-reader? And have you already done a bookshelf tour? And how do you manage work and a reading schedule? I scrolled through your list of videos and can’t say that I saw any references to these topics. Could make for good Q&A video. 😁
I want to read about Indian, African and some Asian mythology also. I use to be so intrigued with Greek and nose mythology.
I'm with you on all of this. I too have a pile of books I need to go through and finish. Sometimes it's such a daunting task. Also I'm sick of every time black women try to discuss something, people become determined to hijack the conversation or dismiss our issues. It annoys me soooooo much!

Ohhh, wouldn't it be amazing to read a book about Lindy or Balboa featuring characters like Frankie Manning and/or Norma Miller. I saw Norma Miller dance live a few years back and she was INCREDIBLE! I know that Zadie Smith wrote 'Swing Time' but I'm thinking more about the American dance scene (I'm more familiar with it because I'm from Canada and briefly lived in Seattle).

I hear you.....I have a goal to not buy anymore books until I read the ones I have.
I feel the same way as you. I have so many books on my shelf relating to race, white privilege, etc and cannot find the strength currently to get through it. The world in itself is already emotionally draining...I don’t want my favorite time (reading) to be emotional draining too. But on there other hand these books are so helpful with navigating conversations centered on race and prepare you for having to have these tough dialogues with non black people.

Hello! Great video with addressing the emotional space you have to be in to read certain books especially about slavery and the disrespect of black americans. Certain books I just feel a certain way about reading like, Barracoon, THUG, Underground Railroad etc. Reading these books will make me angry and feel overwhelmed and helpless actually. I'm sure the storyline is great but it's just overwhelming. I did read Homegoing last year and it is a great book but there are parts that are draining as well. FYI: I try my best to avoid watching the news, too much negative energy.

My partner did his ancestry thing to find out about where in Africa his parents originated before colonialism. It's pretty clear/accurate if that makes sense.
He did it through ancestry.co.uk as it identifies both maternal and paternal sides of your DNA.

I totally agree with you about being annoyed when a book is marketed as 'diverse'. I would much rather pick up a book and start reading and discover that the characters are different ethnicities/belong to the LGBTQ+ community etc. rather than have a book marketed to me in that way. Otherwise I feel like they are trying to sell books of the back of the progress and awareness or struggles that those minority groups are making/facing. Most of the time when a book is marketed that way they have one side character or villain who belongs to a minority which annoys the hell out of me. Its one thing to include these characters in your book and have people comment on how they appreciated it afterwards and a totally different thing to sell off the back of these communities. Eventually Id appreciate it if books just included diverse casts without any outward mention and it just became he norm.

Who knew Amerie was this enlightened? Love people who read and not just social media woke. I recommend The Color of Law and Black Labor White wealth. It’s eye opening for African Americans in this country. I wasn’t a fan of the goldfinch. It dragged on and on and could have been summed up in 200 pages in my opinion.

The Cloud Atlas movie and book were not good. It was hard to follow and didn't seem to have a true storyline, especially the movie.
