  • Autumn has fallen in the Baltics, and this week we found ourselves in the port city of Klaipeda. Klaipeda is right on the Baltic Sea, and we immediately fell in love with the charming seaside vibes of this beautiful city.
Even though the weather was quite rainy and cold, we had a wonderful time exploring. In this video, we visit Old Town, stroll along the River Promenade, visit the Old Bazaar, eat at a local restaurant, and grab a drink at a really cool bar.

Hey, im lithuanian and Klaipėda is my city. Im very glad you liked this city, its weird to see a lot of tourists there cause to me Klaipeda seems simple and not as impressive as other cities. But Klaipeda is one of those places that is very calm and chill. Klaipedians can be tough people because we always have to stay grounded while the wind is strong.

So the black ghost. Ill tell you the story behind it. So there is a story that in the 16th - 17th century there was a guard on duty in the castle (Now a cool museum) And some unknown person all in black that you couldn't even see his face got out of the water and asked the guard how he was doing and if they had food and how overall the military was doing. The guard responded by telling the person in black that it was all fine , they had food etc. Then the mysterious person said "Its not gonna be long that way" And went back into the water and disappeared.

Lived in Klaipėda for 3 years. The best thing was that during summer after work you can just hop on your car or bike, go to the beach and still get 3-4 hours of warmth and sunshine. The two worst things are that there still are low level criminal people there and that local Russians who account for some 30% of population in Klaipėda still don't speak Lithuanian (they understand and can speak but they simply refuse).

@@liminalspace1382 I don't care about your thumbs down. I have no hate towards Russians as I have many great Russian friends who either live in Russia itself or speak Lithuanian in Lithuania (mostly in Kaunas and Vilnius). I state the fact that a lot of Russian people in Klaipėda refuse to speak Lithuanian even if they understand it. Lithuanian is an official language in the EU, so it's used widely because EU laws state that all the official documents must be translated into all official languages of the EU.

A place where we take our out-of-country guests to is the Cold War Museum. About 40 minutes from Klaipeda by car, it is situated on a former Soviet rocket base, where they had nuclear rockets, but never fired. It's about an hour long tour which we discovered is quite interesting for USSR outsiders, during season they do it in English as well, and English groups are very small, so likely you'd be having a personal guide :D Admission is 7 euros, the only issue is getting there if you don't have a car or friends with one here.
