Blondie is the band, Debbie Harry is the singer guys.
I think it's fine to call her Blondie, the name has EVERYTHING to do with her and not her band mates. It's also perfectly fine to refer to Frankenstein's Monster as Frankenstein.
@@ckobo84 Sometimes it is scary how mind-reading the YT algorithm, or some other commenter, is. My thoughts exactly, especially the Frank part.
This was a BIG hit in 1980/81. Yeah, it was on the radio, yeah, we all sang along. Debbie Harry turned the entire country into rappers! 😄
The man from Mars stopped eatin' cars and eatin' bars and now he only eats guitars! I love this track. It actually helped rap go mainstream.
Great job guys. Rapture is the 1st rap song to go #1. Blondie had many different styles.
The group Blondie made so many diverse songs. Big props to originality and talent.
That’s why it’s called Rapture. Blondie were a band from the NYC underground mud scene. They jumped on the nascent Hip Hop bandwagon and created the first mainstream Rap hit.
Blondie wasn't the first one to start rap, but she's the first to take it to main stream, to a wider audience. Her singing (and rapping) and the band were so tight.
She's said her rapping here wasn't very good
This and Rapper’s Delight were huge cross over hits.
The DJ in Blondie's “Rapture” music video was actually Jean-Michel Basquiat. The last piece of the puzzle: the DJ. Grandmaster Flash was ostensibly supposed to play the turntables, but he was unable to make it. “I wanted to be in that video so bad,” Flash told The Post.Jul 7, 2021
This video was seen by millions on MTV. First time rapping was on National TV. Debbie Harry was a ground breaker.
Im 62 and I used to roller skate to Blondie...She was the bomb :)
Debbie harry asserting her brilliance every man’s dream for the times. Blondie innovating band progressively ahead of it’s time.
Just no way to even come close to accurately describing how influential and eye opening this was for so many when it dropped. It was the first contact with rap/hip hop culture (which was pretty much brand stinking new itself at the time) for millions of us.
The dancer is William Barnes. The DJ is The artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, the two graffiti artists are Lee Quinones & Fab Five Freddy.
Those dudes Deborah danced with are part of the band Blondie. Deborah Harry is the lead singer. 🥴🤔👍✌️
No ones going to mention Jean Michel Basquiat playing the DJ or Fab Five Freddy being in the video. Was also the first "rap" video on Mtv, part of the original 90 video rotation and the first "rap" song to go to number 1 on billboard hot 100.
Grandmaster Flash, and the Furious Five and Kurtis Blow were all just starting in the streets of the Bronx (no rap records yet) when Blondie did this. THIS IS THE FIRST RAP ON PUBLIC TV EVER.
Those weren't extras, that was the band dancing with her.
Debbie Harry is the name of the singer; the band is called Blondie. The guys she was dancing with that you called "extras" are the band members.
For you young Millennials who weren't born yet this song helped open up the door for hip hop a.k.a Rap 🧑🏫🧠
Clem Burke is the drummer. He is AWESOME. Check out "Dreaming".
Most people had never heard of rap until this.
This was the first "Rap" song that I can remember. It wasn't called "rap" then, because she could also sing, and had a great voice too.
"Rap"-ture - the first pun in Rrap music.
It was #1 for 2 weeks in 1980. Huge song at the time and even today
It was number one in 1981 March 28th 1981 through April 4th 1981 explanation mark it was a magical time for me and I'm a huge Blondie fan and I remember it all explanation mark
They usherd in the new wave punk movement in America ten years later did the same with rap . Making them a big part of modern pop culture trend setters inspired by underground artist in NYC
This song and "Rapper's Delight" were the first songs that many of us were introduced to rap. I remember in middle school many people were rapping both. Or attempting to do so.
This is pretty much the first rap song to go big time in mainstream/white America. I remember hearing it when it came out when I was 11. We had never heard anything like it. Soon after, I heard Grandmaster Flash.
Most every boy 10-21 was in love with Debbie Harry when this song was released. And, every girl wanted to be her AND learn all the rap lines. 💜
we all aged since then and debby still looks great
Funky Funky Funky!!!!!! So says Austin Tx!!!! Priceless!!!! So says Austin Tx!!! 😎🍸
This is such a great example of 80's. This made my night. Thank you.
I was a 6 year old little girl when this came out and was obsessed with this song and Blondie
'Blondie' the band, with singer Deborah Harry, worked regularly in underground punk rock clubs for years. They did not have mainstream success until Debbie was 37 years old.
I as born in 1971. She was my first famous chick crush. Even now at 51 her voice melts me!
We definitely loved this when it came out and I still love it today!
This song was "the" first rap song to hit the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the winter of 1981. The lead singer of Blondie, Debbie Harry, wrote and co-produced this song. She was the first white artist to have a rap song to hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart before Vanilla Ice, Snow and Eminem came on the music scene.
You need to put your wife in your intro brother. Don’t leave her hanging. She’s correct.
First rap to be featured on MTV. At the time rap was just a local club phenomenon in New York without many recordings. The vast majority had never heard any rapping until this. It opened the door.
Great reaction you two!
Now do "Maria", by Blondie. PLEASE!
It's a GREAT SONG!
Singer Debbie Harry of the band "Blondie" became friends with Bronx-based hip-hop artists in the late 1970s. Debbi Harry went to a rap event in the Bronx one night in 1978, and she was impressed by the skill and excitement as MCs like Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five Fab 5 Freddy, rhymed lyrics over the beats of spinning records and people lined up for a chance to take the microphone and freestyle rap. Debbie Harry went to a few more such events, before deciding to write a rap song of her own in late 1979. She decided to combine what she had seen and heard in the Bronx with Chic-inspired disco music. The title "Rapture" was an obvious pun on rap.
#1 on Billboard Chart, technically the first rap song to hit #1.
The dude spray painting graffiti when she first walked out of the bar was actually Jean Michael Basquiat! The DJ was Fab 5 Freddy, and there were many more cameos in that video.
This was the first time I ever heard anyone rapping, and 5he last time I could understand the words 😂
Singer is Debby Harry. The guys who danced with her are the group "Blondie".
Yeah, this one grabbed a lot of radio time when it released. I was still in high school, some good memories of this and some of the band's other hits. Debby was fabulous!
This was a hit. It was the first rap song to get airtime on MTV since they wouldn't play actual black rap artists.
That was Fab Five Freddy spray painting graffiti on the wall who was one of the pioneers of hip hop and rap. That was Jean Michel Basquiat the famous street artist DJing on the turn table. He was Madonna's boyfriend in late 82. They broke up because of his drug addiction. He eventually overdosed and died in 88. He was very talented and was gone too soon. Keith Haring the famous pop artist was Madonna's roommate and close friend in 82. He also was gone too soon because he died of AIDS in 90. RIP Basquiat and Haring.
Try ATOMIC by Blondie 😎
Yes!!!!
Atomic! Please!
Yes we jammed to this song! We sang we rapped and we danced! This song had it all. Chiguy
This was the first rap video on MTV.
So ahead of their time. Deborah Harry's voice is amazing. Perfect pitch for this kind of music.
This is the first number one rap song ever
Debbie Harry and Kermit The Frog: "Rainbow Connection" (1981).
First time most of the country heard, "And ya hip-hop. And ya don't stop."
Youll like " dreaming " by blondie live for the drums! He kills it!!! From west coast Canada 🇨🇦, peace.
She shouts out Fab Five Freddie ❤
It was a big hit! I wish someone would react to Dreaming,The official video. You would appreciate the drumming on that one.
They already did it.
Im old 53 years but yeah roller rink and blondie was played everybody got out in the rink.
Not only was it a huge hit but the guy in white is wearing glasses with red lights, there was a craze and every kid had to have a pair.
..."Class of 76"...The Black guy in the White tux is dancing the moves in honor of their originator a Black stage performer from the 20's...This song was the 1st rap song to reach the charts so basically she introduced rap to the world...In NY she hung out with many genres of musician's...street rappers, disco, rock and Punkers...note the Rap verses makes no sense...that's the Punk..
debbie harry had it all… give her some respect
RAP-ture... Great song. Great reaction.
❤❤ IT !! Don't want to go on Long Rant here ( already did one on the DEVO post...I'm 64 yr OLD Lucky Girl with Fun R&R history..
....I'm a Lucky Girl seen Blondie 4 times 1st 1979 CBGBs..2nd 80 ? 81? ( opened for RUSH at Philly Spectrum...2nd time I saw Rush..1st was in 74? 75? ....was my 3rd concert 1st Doobie Bros...2nd a band I'd only heard One song of called Killer Queen....Queen & Freddie BLEW Me Away !!) ANYWAY the Rush/Blondie concert was at Philly Spectrum && Was NUTS...I was a Rush && Blondie Fan, BUT Most were there for RUSH && started Booing Blondie & throwing bottles...They kept playing && GREAT AWESOME Thing...Debbie Harry Launched into song One Way or Another, started throwing the bottles back, grabbed & kicked a couple of guys who tried to grab her when she was at edge of stage....LOL
debra harry and her band blondie were definitely ahead of her time. SHE was the first white and the first female rapper. this was 2 years ahead of the heavy rap out of compton with ez and nwa. she took it mainstream and went to the rock and roll hall of fame. you would think a music reactor would know this. good luck with your next profession!
The "extras" Deborah danced with were members of the band Blondie.
It was a hit . Remember when it premiered on MTV . First rap song on MTV . Rock fans liked it which at that time was a big deal .
i am aging myself but Debbie Harry was my crush! late 70s early to mid 80s loved her! Blondie was the Band name!
Oh, and Gorgeous!!!!!
My favorite Blondie song is Atomic. It's totally different. This is also fantastic
Dude that drum intro is sick!!
The guy in the white suit was Fab Five Freddy who would latter go on to host Yo MTV Raps with Ed Lover on MTV
This was the first Rap song to go to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Nuff said a blonde white chick got soul! It was amazing especially in the time! It opened a lot of doors.
She’s a great singer, Debbie Harry, and the group as Blondie were so tight. There’s a lot to dive into with this band. Of course Heat of Glass, Eat to the Beat, I’m sure you’re getting inundated.
I thought you didn’t interrupt videos? But this is recent so that’s a change? I kept scream at the TV; Let it play you’re about to get your heads blown!
This is my favorite Blondie song 🎶 😊
The new intro is fire! Very cool!
This STILL sounds great... She was the first white female "rapper" back then "The Sugar Hill Band" brought rap to life... This band BLONDIE had some great hits in the 80's... She still doing shows....
It is widely accepted that this song coined the term "Rap" from "rap"ture! Great reaction
widely accepted by morons maybe
this is ridiculously untrue
No. It’s called Rapture as a play on the term that already existed for music fromThe Bronx but it was born from an old term meaning let’s talk, usually seriously.. . We used to say, “let’s rap”, or “we rapped all night.. “
@@flerbus The only people that call people morons are cunts, so we know who you are.
@@JoeQPublic2023andbeyond stop typing moronic shit and no one will call you a moron you dope
In 1979, the year before Rapture, there were at least a handful of songs with rap in the title that got released. Most notably Rapper's Delight by Sugar Hill Gang, but also stuff like Kurtis Blow - Christmas Rappin', Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five - Superrappin', Funky Four Plus One - Rappin' and Rocking the House and several others.
Blondie is great and Rapture is a really cool song that helped bring rap into the mainstream charts, but they most definitely did not coin the term.
big hit when I was in college also recently went to Meow Wolf in New Mexico they played this song fit perfectly with the crippyness of that place
This was the first song with a rap element that charted.
The band was very into all the street music they were hearing in NYC.
Blondie was a little bit different but she had a lot of great songs. 3:08 !
Love your hair. Gorgeous
You would probably like the 12 inch mix called Rapture (Disco version.) It is 10 minutes long and has the long version of the guitar solo.
HUGE hit when it came out.
Love your new intro
Love BLONDIE
She can definitely spit bars!
Thanks for your review.
"The Man From Mars" is dancer William Barnes
Such a great song! 😎
Fab Five Freddy and the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat make cameos in this super-influential track and video!
Debra Harry aka Blondie
is also an Actress
Check out
Tales from the Darkside movie ©1990
Debbie Harry is the singer, but the band is Blondie. Yes, this was a hit, but then again most everything they have done is or was a hit. They play very diverse music, such as disco, rap rock, punk, new wave, and hard rock. A deep rabbit hole for sure! Another good one by them is: One Way or Another.
'Face to face' was her actual boyfriend. :)
*READ: BLONDIE WITH DEBBIE HARRY WERE THE FIRST BAND IN HISTORY TO EVER HAVE THE FIRST NUMBER ONE RAP SINGLE IN THE WORLD. IT WAS NUMBER ONE ACROSS THE GLOBE. THEY ALSO WERE THE FIRST ARTIST WHO HAD AN ORIGINAL RAP PERFORMED TO THEIR OWN MUSIC, NOT LIFTING BEATS AND TRACKS FROM OTHER ARTISTS. BLONDIE WAS AND WILL ALWAYS BE..... THE FIRST. AND THEY ARE STILL TOURING THE WORLD. LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!*
Love you 2 again.
Grandmaster Flash sampled this song on Wheels of Steel in 1981--you're right, it was a massive hit :)
Watch John Travolta in Phenomenon. Can’t remember any dancing but such a good movie!
first ever rap song on MTV
This & Rapper's Delight.
Brought Rap main stream along with SHG. We were like what the hell is this.
BLONDIE is the GROUP!!!!!!! Debbie Harry is the Singer Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
