Welcome Teez to the Carpenters rabbit hole. They were the #1 American act of the 1970’s. What stopped it was Karen, Richard’s younger sister, died of heart failure brought on by Anorexia Nervosa. She died in 1983 at 32. That said there is a legacy of incredible music. Karen’s voice was described countless ways and none suffice. Richard was the arranger, writer and keyboards. Karen was a drummer extraordinaire. Those background singers you commented on were Karen and Richard. Richard mastered overdubbing and for the most part it was them doing all the singing. There are exceptions but the vast majority was just them, in studio. Live the band did harmony work. If you want to go down the hole some good starting songs would be; Rainy Days and Mondays, Superstar, Close To You and A Song For You. Just look for the video or audio with a bazillion views and you’re on the right track. This was early, 1970 it just keeps getting better and more complex. Carpenters music is very complex. Enjoy.
Joe
can't believe how young she passed away, but she left an extraordinary legacy and that's all we can strive to do ❤
@@TeezMcGee I lived it. I bought Close To You album, in 1970. So it began for me. 💔
From my earliest recollection of listening to music, which is 50+ years, Karen's voice is still the most beautiful voice I've ever heard
Same here. We must be about the same age.
@@angelskunk2206 I'm right around 60
A brother Richard and a sister, tons of hits, Karen was not only a great singer she was also the drummer....
Thanks Teez!!
Sobbing. RIP sweet girl
Watch their live concert in London BBC in 1971 - phenomenal - they were a huge hit in Britain and Europe - flawless concert. You can see her drumming skills as well as the rest of the band. I saw them in 1972 at Washington State University. They have an orchestra that performs some live concerts, but the musicians you see are in their BBC concert, very good. She died in 1983 from anorexia - she had problems with body image and a strained relationship with her mother, who seemed to focus on the brother to the exclusion of Karen. Her voice has been described as angelic, haunting, etc. She was a phenomenal drummer and preferred to play behind the drums which she did many times, but there are concerts with her doing extensive drumming solos. Go back to 1968 where she performed with the first group. I think her only training was in the high school band in California, but she was around a lot of talent.
Thank you. Her voice is angelic. Amazing. 😊😊😊
Nice, Teez! The beauty in her voice is off the charts. She was a figure in our home, most of my life. I'm 58 and so happy that i grew up with the music that I did. It does my heart good to hear you listen to these songs. Keep up the great work.
they played ALL of their own background music which was taped and played for their concerts. I had the honor of seeing them in concert twice when in college, one where they showed the audience how they produced their incredible sounds.
I've always loved her voice
i see why ❤
Karen was blessed with the voice you would imagine an angel would possess. Such a tragic life she had & a tremendous loss to the music industry 😢
One of the best voices in the history of the recording industry. Karen was consistently “pitch perfect” and often even more accurate LIVE…she was often referred to as “One-take Karen”.
Her brother Richard is a remarkable tAlent also…and his “arrangements” are masterful.
Karen was also a rarity in that she was a very skilled drummer/vocalist…and that flawless Contralto voice.
Richard and Karen pioneered the practice of singing/recording their own backing vocals…which made their harmonies even more flawless.
My favorite Carpenters song is Rainy Days and Mondays. If you dig the Carpenters and want to keep exploring, check it out!
Angelic her voice was...
Richard was great arranger/producer.
Rainy days and mondays. Her voice
Richard had originally heard this as a Bank Commercial for Crocker Bank n became a Gold million selling single which hit #2 on the Billboard Top 100 Singles and was a huge wedding song...
check out 'Rainy Days and Mondays', 1976 solo drum special, Solitaire, Close to You (the video she's on the drums? and more
THE best voice that God ever put on this planet Karen Carpenter, and the legendary Buddy Rich once called Karen his favorite drummer. Great reaction to a legend!!! . Her brother is a genius arraigner. The opinion of many in the music world is Karen is untouchable, in a class of one. They had 14 #1's on Adult listening charts in their first 5 years. They were out of this world.
What a beautiful voice
Very beautiful voice, remarkable 🙌
RIP beautiful angel, as tragic as her short life was gone at 32 years of age, the songs will be forever etched in our minds , thanks Teez , 💕 if we don’t get to hear from you tomorrow, Happy New Year 🎉
Well said ❤ Happy New Year my girl 🎉 🎉 🎉
Nice reaction! Check out Rainy Days & Mondays, the live version. Karen sings and plays the drums! She was a great drummer.....RIP Karen
This should be played at every wedding. And every guest needs to sit down, stfu, and open their ears while it plays. Newlyweds only on the floor, and if they can actually dance to it, the marriage might last.
Played at every wedding in 70s and 80s
Hey Teez! While they didn't show all of the musicians, they did display two tambourines... TWO! Very few bands were that bold.
yea they were on point and loved the energy during the chorus especially ❤
@@TeezMcGee, they're a really great soft rock band. 💖💙💖💙💖
Great song to hear as we approach a New Year! Beautiful harmony!
Great reaction! .My bff had the album around '72, but Ive never seen the video. The backup harmonic vocals here are amazing! Everyone played this at their wedding receptions for years!❤
the backup vocals were only Karen and her brother Richard... Those in this video "singing" were their concert band who DID sing in their live performances, but NOT on their records/recording. This video everyone was lip synching so thus you saw the others "singing" in this video along with Karen and Richard.
@@tomschmitz-dj1fg Thanks for that explanation!❤️
From my earliest recollection of listening to music, which is 50+, Karen's voice is still the most beautiful voice I've ever heard
Also undertones of hope and and excitement
Decades before auto tune. She was pitch perfect across the board whether it was live or recorded
Probably lip sinking ( not live) common when televised. (No microphone). You right. No drums trumpets or flute. This song was played at every wedding in the 70s 80s and 90s. My guess, half billion people have heard this, and loved it.
A freaking Angel!!!!
Karen Carpenter was a very special magic that cuts deep and hits your soul centered up. Her singing can make me smile and cry at the very same time. Richard Carpenter is a key part to their sound and immensely talented as well. Keep listening, you will be blown out. Check out "Solitaire" and "Ordinary Fool" and "Little Alter Boy". These are some deeper cuts.
background vocals are overdubbed by Karen and Richard
Loved how you loved this song. Only one correction- this is a lip-synched video of the studio version.
"live performance" in that they are moving their lips and are alive
Great reaction 🤩 please react Carpenters a song for You in complete version is amazing🤭
🔥
🔥🔥🔥🥰
That was a studio recording over the video..
When you know what happened to her, this is an incredibly sad song.
I didn't appreciate them when I was younger, but the older I get, the more I realize how wrong I was!
There will never be another Karen Carpenter!
Thank you for your reaction. Please also react to their song, "Superstar" - thank you. Peace.🍩☕
Hi Teez 💗.
hey Cay Cay 😊😊😊🧡
Check out "Close To You "!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Every time I hear this song it transports me RIGHT back to my beautiful backyard on a warm and sunny Summers day, ten years old and picking blueberry's. I can even smell the Jazmin. czcams.com/video/GQQbjpomexo/video.html
This is what great music sounded like before the days of autotune.
Great, thanks! But oh my... 70's hair was terrible! LOL
So sad how she left us!! But brought attention to eating disorders
