  • as I had a quick stop over back in glasgow for my next adventure, I decided to visit another hidden gem (thanks to one of my subscribers for mentioning). The Tenement House, run by the National Trust For Scotland, is a great time capsule of what living in the early 20th century Glasgow was like! Thank you very much to the staff who let me in, even though they were closing, and the very knowledgable tour guide for their time. Very grateful I got to visit this amazing place! I mind going to the Tenement house a few years ago . With some of my friends . Brings back good memories. I was born in a tenement house in the Clydeside area of Glasgow.

Glad you enjoyed it! Every time I've been to the house there's new things to notice, like the staff said it's really interesting because this really was how normal Glaswegians lived, why I went the first time ,to see how my parents/grandparents lived, puts a lot of family stories into perspective seeing something similar to what they reminisced about :)

Thank you for recommending! As soon as I arrived back in Glasgow from Blackpool (and before catching my next train) I ran to the Tenement House as I remembered what you had said! Definitely, Fantastic step back in history and amazing it has remained untouched to preserve an era of Glasgow that would have been lost! I’m glad I’ve had the chance to visit it 😁 thank you again, appreciate it 🙌

Do you know why she had three hair brushes on her dressing table? There's a very simple reason for it. She probably never, or very rarely, washed her hair. They're camel hair brushes and every night she'd brush her hair, probably with 100 strokes, which was the norm, and then wash the brush. She'd use the brushes in rotation so that she always had a dry brush, which is why she had three of them. Why didn't she just wash her hair? Because there were no shampoos or conditioners then and if a lady washed her hair with soap it went frizzy. Frizzy hair meant unkempt. It also denoted that you did manual work because if you did, your hair got so dirty that you had to wash it. If she brushed it the dirt in her hair and any dead hair would come out in the natural camel fibres. Thus your hair stayed clean, unfrizzed and glossy from it's own natural oils and denoted that you were a lady. How do I know this? Because my mother went through the same ritual every night when she was young.

When was the Tenement House build in Glasgow, Scotland?

    • @MacBlogs

I’m probably not the best person to ask, I think most tenements in Glasgow were built between 1840-1920, I think this tenement might be built around 1890? But I’m not sure

@@MacBlogs watching it was emotional for me, almost to tears, relative home was builded in 1907 some of the same features: the radiators, high ceilings, the door knobs, little features. I slept on spring coil iron bed as shown when visiting. I still kept a few odds and ends. (Tins, Clothes Iron, Hand Mirror). Thanks again for responding back.
