Tic Tac Dough (September 23, 1985) - Jim Caldwell's first episode

  • Taking the place of veteran Wink Martindale as host of the X-and-O trivia game was newcomer to the industry Jim Caldwell. He frankly did a decent enough job here all things considered, and the set was certainly a step up from what came before, but sadly the writing was on the wall and this would be the show's final season.

I remember this. The set sure got an '80s makeover with the new host. Having just watched Wink's last show on CZcams, it's particularly interesting, seeing these shows back to back, the same contestants going from the old format to new format. It seems everything drastically changed in the mid-1980s.

This was Steve Caldwell’s first show and it’s and final season of “Tic Tac Dough”. He remained for about a year until the show ended its run in 1986. It was first aired on WOR-TV (channel 9) in Secaucus, NJ.

Jim is not a bad host. He's no Wink, but he keeps the show up and doesn't flub immensely. The problem was that game shows were starting to lose their edge compared to those in the 70s. Yeah, Jeopardy in its current form came from the 80s, but other than that, most game shows either retreaded on old ideas with nothing special or just seemed complicated for the sake of being unique. It was certainly a dark time.
