    Nice box, not good enough. I am a military trained electrician, (21 years, retired), and spent 30 years in factories, as a electrical maintenance manager and an industrial engineer.
    I got into this hobby about five years ago, and had a similar setup, save I elevated my platform off the bench with two glued on 2X4's. After time, you get a bit lazy...then maybe cut a few corners. We all say we won't, BUT WE ALL DO. I recently got into fractal burning guitars, and one late afternoon, a bit tired, didn't realize it was still on and touched one probe. The other one literally jumped into my other hand, as the hand was touching the edge of the guitar body. I "Rode the Lightning" for about two seconds until I fell on my right side, heavily bruising my shoulder and hitting my head on the floor. When I hit, I woke up, got up and went into the house and had my wife call 911. Heartrate was 160, and I ended up in a burn center for three days as they monitored my heart, and treated the burns on my hands, which were not that bad. Huge hematoma on my forehead, and a scalp cut on my head where I scraped on a bench nearby. NOT FUN, NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCES....
    Changes I will make:
    1. Add two momentary on switches to the incoming 120VAC in a plastic housing. Both have to be pressed to engage the unit. No 120VAC, no burn. Two switches, two hands.
    2. My potentiometer, which I use to adjust the voltage, will be next, in a straight line away from me. Adjust before I can press both buttons, which are UL approved to be Open when released.
    3. The actual unit on its platform, further away down the line.
    4. The probes, with 10K insulated wire, extending to a separate wooden table.
    5. Finally, 12K gloves, 1.8MM thick, in case the switches, and the potentiometer all fail and it stays lit.
    6. I am standing on 3/4" insulated rubber flooring, the final table will not be on the same rubber.
    Sound like a lot? 6000VAC is a lot! I am lucky to be writing this, but this is what I should have done in the first place.
    Lichtenberg is like nothing else in beauty, and it is highly, highly dangerous. I see people using regular wire, no gloves, machine very near to the work, and I think, there is number 34, waiting to die....
    Stay safe.

      @Justin.Franks Před rokem +2

      Wow. You are _very_ lucky to have gotten away with only burns and no permanent damage. Most people that survive one of these encounters end up with a few less fingers. Really gnarly injuries. Having two momentary switches is a great idea. Like most dangerous activities, there are ways of reducing risks. Combined with the HV gloves (a lot of people just use standard electrical gloves that can't handle the high voltages, and they end up with the gloves melted to their hands when something goes wrong), the insulating mat, it sounds like you have definitely thought this through.

    What determines which one of those three wires coming out of the transformer going to your wood project is the correct wire to use?

  • @cberbes
    @cberbes Před rokem +4

    You should add two more safety steps into your design. First put a small light inline between your switch and the transformer, so you know when there is power going to it. You NEED to add a dead man foot switch. Plug your device into the foot switch that way it can only get power while you are standing on the switch, which should be far away from your work. That way there is less of a chance you can accidentally touch your work piece while the power is still on. People have died using these and forgetting to turn it off or quickly reaching out to move a probe while it is still powered.

      This wiring job for 2000-3000 Volts with clamps exposing the conducting metal insulated by rubber that can crack is fine to you? None of this would have any chance of passing any UL certification as the currents possible are lethal and you can die in a split second.
      The voltage and current is equivalent to that used in an electric chair. The fractals you see on the wood are what you can expect happening through your nerves and heart within no time. At 3,000 Volts, you know arcs can be formed even through a microscopic crack or needle prick defect in that rubber insulation (3mm jump) and if there is any dirt or humidity in such crack, it's even much easier for the current to flow.
      I have a master degree in electrical engineering and if this was some mains power residential wiring, I could be less concerned, but even then, you don't expose clamps with the full voltage (e.g. 120V) and high power. Lots of people die because they become complacent or are ignorant about the true dangers and any protocol involved in using such setup.
      I've had lots of electric shocks from my engineering experiences and a few that got me worried, but this is an entirely different level than hitting a live wire in a house with a finger. I've replaced all my 70 outlets and switches in my house with Z-Wave models btw and professionally engineered consumer electronics products for such brands as Bang & Olufsen including getting things certified for CE, UL etc. safety. Ages ago I was engineering CRT TVs with the flyback transformer also having lethal voltages. I got a shock once from that and never forget it, but current is not as crazy as from a microwave transformer, where there is zero mercy and you will fry the inside of your body

      @@ThinkingBetter you are talking about the safety of this at the same time admitting that you have been hit many times. The output of this isn’t comparable to that of an electric chair. It’s AC voltage. Microwave outputs DC while still deadly they aren’t comparable. Since you’re such an expert you already know the differences. And with different voltages and amperage that they are completely different. The whole UL listing had me laughing. Oh and you changed out over 80 devices? Nice. A few things spring to mind here. This project is incredibly dangerous, lethal in fact. Nails & metal handles make great high voltage antennae, so every single one nailed into that box is potentially an exit point to burn or electrocute you. It is a serious accident almost certain to happen, I'd stop using it immediately. Also, the gentleman quite clearly states, 'I'm not an electrician by any stretch". Here in Queensland (Australia) what this guy has done is classified as "Electrical Work". As it's unlicensed electrical work that is an immediate $400 on the spot fine, minimum. As it's also a dangerous act, the fines escalate dramatically up into tens of thousands of dollars and recently a company director received $100,000 fine for unlicensed electrical work & no-one was injured or died. If someone is injured or dies as a result, well I guess you better have the deed to your house handy & get used to prison food. If that project starts a fire, burns the house down the insurance company will have every right to refuse paying out. Think of it as unintentional arson. Check with your local electrical authority too & you'll find most will have similar laws governing electrical work. And posting on CZcams when the video can be traced to you, well you just guaranteed a win for the prosecuting attorney. I understand the fascination with this as a form of art, but is really worth any those risks?

      How many parachute, rock climbing, race car driving, boaters, backyard wrestlers and snake handlers have died from doing their obviously dangerous hobbies? I rest my case.
      Has anyone ever died in an airplane, just wondering? Carry on, im building this right away.

      mother nature adapts to minimize the numbers of flawed DNA and the dumb,sickly and weaker... animals in nature 99% of the time its only the stupid squirrels that get run over.This world would be 1 hell-of-a mess if the stupid squirrels kept reproducing and multiplying to incredibly vast numbers... there is overwhelming evidence of the harm caused when this important process does not occur in nature. 1 more reason to be thankful for the invention of and ever growing technology of our automotive industry. LOL

      I built one. I made a switch similar to the ones on giant punch presses. two independent momentary contact switches, separated so it's not possible to press both with one hand, also a cover so something can't fall on them and push the switch on. Every things on a plastic table fully insulated from everything else. I have to be at the control stand to use it and that is several feet away from the burning table. The probes are placed and left in place. No way would I have it set up like one other poster who holds the probes with rubber gloves.
