  • It was time to change the oil in our 1968 PA28. So my dad and I got to it! We hope you enjoy this video! If you did, please like it, and subscribe to my channel.
A quick disclaimer... This video is not necessarily a "how to", but more of a vlog of our experience. If you do choose to change your own oil in your aircraft, please consult with a A&P before attempting it.

Tempest oil filters have a lubricant built into the filter gasket. Tempest recommends not coating with oil when installing. I don't think adding the thin layer of oil will hurt, but it's not necessary.

Pro tip my friend has been auto mechanic for 45+ years. He says if you have time slowly put oil into filter before installation, not so much that is pouring out just enough so that the filter media is saturated so go really slow, that way once installed there won't be issues with the media soaking up incoming oil. That way the engine isn't starved for oil as the filter absorbs it and your oil pressure stays higher and more stable. Just my 2 cents.

Good job you guys. Changing the oil in an airplane, and changing the oil in a car or truck is pretty much basically the same thing. I change my own oil in my truck. Obviously I don’t go through the oil analysis like you do in your airplane. But everything else is pretty much the same, putting some fresh oil on the gasket keeps it moist and prevents it from welding itself to the oil filter housing because a vehicle engine gets just as hot as an airplane engine. Torquing is something I don’t do and I’m not even sure if you can on regular filters because there is no nut on the back of the oil filter on your airplane filter. Obviously it’s put there so you can Twork your oil filters. When I put a new oil filter on my truck I spin it on and then I twisted another 3/4 of a turn until I can no longer turn it easily. That has worked for me for nearly 40 years so, never had any leaks. Good job Sammy! Catch you on the next one.

Thanks for the comment! Yeah I normally do that on my car, never had a issue either. However if it's possible to do something by the book, I would rather do it that way. Especially in aviation.

For what it is worth, most oil labs recommend getting a sample about midway through the drain.
Great video though, keep it up!

Thanks for the comment! I was not aware of that, I'll have to look into it.

Yup, that's what Blackstone recommends. However, that did not look like a Blackstone sample bottle, so the company you use might be different.

Hey Samuel... I have never done an "Aviation Oil Change" as I have really owned just one Airplane... it was a Restored 1947 J3 Piper Cub, N3461K that I gifted to my Dad the last fathers day that he was alive in 1986. Dad was a 30K ATP Rated Airline Pilot that learned to fly on the J3 Cub, but Mom would never let him get one. We were on a trip for Moog with two Conquest's N634M and N734M and Company exec's to MSN. After lunch (Dad bought as usual, as it didn't matter if I had a pocket full of 50's...my money was "NO Good" when frank was around). there wa a J3 Cub for sale in the back of the hanger at Frickleton Aviation...Dad started telling stories of his early training with glee! So when he was diagnosed with Lung Cancer at age 53 I decided that I was going to get him one. Anyway, long story short... they had one that was owned by three partners that had just won Oshkosh. N3461K was genuinely as new as it could be but not for sale, so I loaded my briefcase with cash and flew to MSN to make the deal. Finally there was enough cash on the desk for the owners to sell and back to Buffalo I went. Although dad never got to fly it... he did see it one time before his death. A nasty divorce later ensued and my wife's lawyer found where I had it hidden and ended selling it at a big loss! So I never had it long enough to change oil although I did add a qt of Mineral Aero-Shell one time as it was breaking in! Nice to see a Father/Son Project and association that i enjoyed with my Father and thanks for reading this long "Frank Story" from 1987 ';-)

Wow! That's a incredible story! Very sorry to hear about you losing your dad, and the plane. Hopefully you can buy another cub someday.

so why does it say not to put lubricant on the filter rubber gasket?
