I wasn't a big fan of the reboot; seems they're trying to hard to capture what they had and just didn't work.
Until this episode. This was by far the best of the whole new season, and Emmy worthy..
The guest stars were nothing short of incredible. Leslie and his "well well well" in Italian...and Lucie Arnaz as the supervisor. ..... Just amazing.
@@michael91411, I have NEVER been a fan of the show. I knew about it. Knew what it was. But until last night, I hadn't watched a full episode of the original or reboot. I only DVRed this episode because I read about it in my TV Guide about an hour before it was coming on. And that was really only because Debra Messing talked about doing the make up for her part as Fred. I was intrigued to see her as Fred...but was overly surprised by EVERYONE! If Lucy didn't possess the body of Debra...she was amazing! Sean Hayes as Fred was damn near PERFECT. And Leslie Jordan should just be in EVERYTHING!!! That guy NEVER fails in anything I've seen him in.

I remember watching a documentary on TV about I Love Lucy, and they interviewed Debra Messing. Back then I had never heard of the show, because I grew up in Norway, but when I watched the documentary, I thought she was interviewed because she was related to her. xD It just made sense to me that that was the reason.
@@stiras1, I'm assuming...or hoping...that you have since caught up on I Love Lucy. If for some reason you haven't, I would highly recommend it.
@@bonusbaby801 Yeah, I've seen it. Though I watch it a little at a time. I know the show pushed boundaries by having the first on screen pregnancy and things like that, not to mention having a Cuban husband for Lucy in the anti-communist days, but the gender roles bother me. I get annoyed with the power dynamic between Lucy and Ricky.
Debra Messing did a phenomenal portrayal of Lucy. Her facial expressions were spot on!

It’s only borderline perfect because of these two things: She looks pregnant and Lucy wasn’t and had a waist, and the voice is CRITICAL. How could they have screwed that up? She needed to deepen and go raspy. We are all imitating Lucille Ball’s voice right now - 😂😂 We can do it?? A professional actor can’t?? It would be like being all made up to look like Groucho Marx and then having someone else’s voice coming out of the character instead of Groucho’s. This is LUCILLE BALL for crying out loud!! Why is Debra Messing’s high-pitched voice coming out of Lucy? Major fail considering her spot on appearance. (Except again, Lucy had a lovely figure and small waist at that time. That’s confusing except none of us watch this show so is her character pregnant?
She even had the painted on eye brows. I read Lucy's autobiography and she burnt her eye brows off and they wouldn't grow back, so spent her life painting eye brows on

She did great with this. It's not easy trying to recreate something that was originally perfection. I think she did really well.
As a huge Lucy fan who watched this scene so many times, she had nearly everything right! Even the director and assistant was great!

Debra Messing deserves an oscar or something for this.. Lucy's daughter said she was so impressed by Debra's impression of Lucy that it made her cry because it almost seemed like her mother was still alive!! AMAZING!
No doubt Lucys daughter would be teary eyed seeing Debra playing her mom in the classic piece of comedy.

Hell of a job by the cast. Sean Hayes' Fred was amazing. And casting Leslie Jordan for the grapes scene was GENIUS!! You know...all these years later & I still don't know if we truly appreciate what a splendid show I Love Lucy was.
It definitely holds up for what it was.
I think we DO appreciate it as THE iconic show in television history. Why else make shows like this? What other 70 year old shows can still command an audience like "I Love Lucy". When they show the Christmas episode and another colorized episode each year, it is ALWAYS the highest rated show of the night. Truly amazing and a testament to its greatness and the enduring love America will always have for the show and its stars, especially Lucy.
Casting Leslie Jordan in the grape stomping scene was truly inspired. Great idea!

Scorpio1964 Wines Well that’s definitely not true. It only never went off the air in the US. I grew up in Argentina and live in Switzerland now and have friends in several other countries, and none of them knows I love Lucy. It’s most probably not shown in other countries (or just not anymore). I found out about this show already as an adult and had to look up the episodes online, thankfully I know English because otherwise I couldn’t have watched it.
She embodied Lucy so well, it's scary!... "Do you pop out at parties? Are you unpoopular?"

I really have been waiting for the moment where she please Lucy. Ever since the first time I saw her in the sitcom before Will & Grace. She has a lot of Lucy characteristics. And the physical resemblance. She did not disappoint on this piece.

I doubt it, she did not reach Lucy's shoes, came short to achieving it, did not work on the voice, fell short.

She caught Lucy's mannerisms, but the voice is nowhere like Lucy's.
With some good vocal training she'd probably get the voice rather easily.
Lucy was whiney to be honest. It played into the humor, though.
Lucy's voice was one of a kind and very hard to duplicate. Debra acted out Lucy exactly!

I always felt Debra Messing reminded me so much of Lucille Ball, especially when she does physical comedy or makes those faces, it’s like seeing Lucille Ball all over again, they need to do a biopic and cast Debra ASAP!

This is so unbelievably spot on, it's crazy.
I think this episode is my all time favorite. I love that Beverly Leslie was in it. This plot was genius. This episode is absolute proof that the writers should keep this show on. I laughed until i cried.

She claimed that she loved Debra Messing doing Lucy,then later slams her. And yes,she was playing the character and not the real person,but Nicole was miscast nevertheless. In fact, the casting of both leads in that movie was off. J.K.Simmons and Nina Arianda were better as Frawley and Vance. Jmo

atgb143 Lucie Arnaz wanted to use Cate Blanchard to play Lucy in an upcoming bio feature film, last I heard from her a few years ago. I hope she will use Debra now as I suggested to her. Debra is funnier, prettier and resembles Lucy more.

Debra actually played Lucy on her prior TV show before W&G. Seeing all the comments saying she should play Lucy tells me no one watched that show.
But in the end Nicole Kidman played Lucy in the new film coming out in Dec.

I LOVE it!!! I just finished watching a special on Lucy and Debra Messing was part of the interview. I had no idea she played this iconic I Love Lucy episode. She aced it!!! I've been watching re-runs of Will and Grace every morning and had no idea she did this until I saw the special on Lucy. I had to run to CZcams (because I already knew I would find it here) and look it up. Love Always I Love Lucy and now Will and Grace is one of my favorite sitcoms I will never miss an episode.
We needed this in a time of so much confusion and sadness. Beautiful for the soul. Laughter and music are such wonderful food for the soul, mind and heart.
