I'm loving the opportunity to relive these old games... with the churned up pitches and the absence of video refs. Embarrassing but this commentator wasn't the only one to confuse Hanley and Gill.

In those days if a Wigan v St Helens match didn't have a 'punch up' at the first scrum, we thought they didn't mean it and were being soft. It was obligatory !

Was the ref blind at 1-52 the linesman saw the punch / swinging arm from the touchline and yet the ref who was right on top of it either saw nothing or bottled it .

Roy Haggerty was a rare breed of player. I had the pleasure of playing with him at Haresfinch RLFC in St Helens..a great Club with some great players. Jonny Harrison whom i grew up with came from Haresfinch, so did Tommy Frodsham aother great Saints Player. I used to love backing Roy up, easy tries for an Hooker. John Harrison was a very clever lad, i think he had about 7 A alevels. Tommy was brilliant a throwing a Dummy. My best year at Haresfinch i was awarded Refs player of the year and Coaches player of the year and also winning the League..precious memories Joe Toole was coach at the time and also a brilliant player..Billy Livesey another great coach and player..and best stand off ever Dennis, scooby a tough player, Frankie martin , superb scrum half.. twish all the Ex Haresfinch players all the best, regards charlie Barlow

Even with a player smashed into a concerete barrier, the stains try to play on. sporting play, screeching stains commentator cant tell the difference between Hanley and Gill for the second try or between 5 and 13. Maybe he cant count past 10? Good job then the score was stains 9 wigan 10.

Bluto forber, arkwright, haggerty - what a bunch of grubs. Hanley still had the better of them despite having more attempts to take his head off than the French Revolution.
