Better Call Saul v. Breaking Bad

  • As Better Call Saul approaches its final season, it’s time to evaluate its role as a spin-off. After seeing the morality tale of a chemistry teacher turned Scarface, did we really need to ALSO see a public defender turned scumbag cartel lawyer? After five seasons, I think we can finally give a definitive answer to this question!

There's still a ton of new shows worth checking (Severance, From, Resident Alien, just to name a few new ones)
Although I get what you mean... i don't quite know of a show as good as either BCS or BB, and it will be nearly impossible for any other show to match its creativity, suspense and overall greatness.
But again, I'm still able to enjoy other shows... mind you, the 3 i mentioned are totally different premises, so that helps their case.
I don't think I can watch or enjoy any other drug/cartel related shows however, not nearly as much -- but Narcos was a really good series too and based off the true stories of the Columbian cartels... Queen of the South was worth the watch, too.

I read someone's comment somewhere that says "Breaking Bad is a plot driven drama with great characters, while Better Call Saul is a character driven drama with interesting plot". I think that's a pretty bang-on description.

    • @Johnnysmithy24
      @Johnnysmithy24 Před 2 lety +26

Actually both of them were character driven at first and both were plot driven later.
Breaking Bad Seasons 1-2 and maybe 3 were character driven, Seasons 4 and 5 were plot driven.
Better Call Saul Seasons 1-4 are character driven, Seasons 5-6 are plot driven
A show like The Sopranos, is one where it’s fully character driven from start to finish and doesn’t bother so much with plot.

Mostly thrill seeking. The things he did to haward dont make him any money. They also choosed to go against Mesa Verde though they dont make money from that. Kim is no different either. She also dont care about money mostly. Its always trill seeking. But she is more subtle.

He essentially admits it in the S1 finale 'Marco' , when talking to Mike about the bag of cash they found at the Kettlemans house.

I disagree, not because I think Breaking Bae does the same style as BCS better, but they are both kind of different in terms of cinematography. For example, Breaking Bad is a lot more gritty and disturbing, so the camera shots tend to empthasise that kind of view. Better Call Saul is more lavish, and quirky, so the the shots compliment it well.

However the perspective has shifted so now we see two main protagonists from totally different positions on the field who are equals at their impacts on the viewer and story. Saul instead gave up trying to be like his brother, and became the person Chuck always thought he was.

The major difference between Breaking Bad and Better call Saul that prevents us to see the latter as déjà vu is that Breaking Bad is a story about change, the change of a unappreciated chemistry teacher to drug kingpin and Better call Saul is a story about not being able to change.
Jimmy don't break bad, he was always bad to various level, from childhood to his Saul glory days. One that SEEMS to break bad in Better Call Saul is Kim and even that is arguable.

I think you’re overestimating the degree that Walter changes throughout breaking bad. Walter was always Heisenberg at heart, he was just afraid to act on it. He admits to this at several points, it’s not that he transforms from good to bad, he goes from fear to boldness. Similarly, Jimmy was always Slippin Jimmy/Saul at heart, but rather than fear it was love for his brother & Kim that made him repress that side of himself until the events of BCS. And the catalyst for him embracing this part of himself was the revelation that Chuck never really liked him anyway, and that Kim actually liked him more as Saul Goodman than as Jimmy Mcgill. Gilligan’s thoughts of change seem pretty consistent between the two shows: we never change who we really are, we just hide it.

That would tend to diminish one or the other, and they're both too good to suffer that kind of tarnish. I've always thought the success of BB gave the producers the confidence to take it even slower, to inhale even deeper, as they got into the character development of BCS. They didn't feel the need to end every episode with a dramatic explosion or an unexpected death, even though I agree with you they seem to be moving in that direction with the Lalo thread. Its the combination of the visceral and emotional carnage, instead of one overshadowing the other, that makes BCS as great as it is.

Thanks Vick! Btw, Dark randomly came up for me today- was rewatching important bits of Breaking Bad and when I got to Face Off… I heard something oddly familiar. An instrumental version of the song “Goodbye” by Apparat (ie the theme song to Dark) plays as Gus gets out of his car and walks into the nursing home for the last time. I don’t remember if that’s already been pointed out to me or if I ever noticed it before but when I heard it today, immediately brought back all those Dark memories haha. Very nice video. Everything was nicely said. I truly believe it is better than breaking bad. The writing is soooo good. We went from a Lawyer drama to being right back into Breaking Bad territory. The moment it happened was Chucks death. He was the moral compass of the show. He held Jimmy in check. When he died Saul was free to roam, and roam he did. Because of that the Breaking Bad infested this show like a plauge. Just look where the show is now. Masterful writing got us there, and great acting.

I don't think he held Jimmy in check. I think he created Jimmy by being such an awful brother that it flipped Jimmy into his Saul ways..... Yeah he's always had a streak of mischeivous conman.... and wanting to fuck over the fuckers..... but in the end, Chuck royally fucking him over pushed him over the edge into just not giving a fuck anymore. That's my take.
Yeah Jimmy attempted to emulate and seek respect and love from Chuck, and Chuck would never give it to him... he was a twat.

BCS is not a mere spin-off. It's a prequel of a series full of deep characters whose past is barely mentioned, but who were running the game long before Walter White broke bad.
The quality of each series is incomparable to one another.
What Vince Gilligan did with Better Call Saul was nothing like making a spin-off of the Godfather, more like exploring the origins of Don Vito and telling the story of how he immigrated from Italy and started his mafia in New York. What was done by Copolla in many scenes of The Godfather II.

Saul is complex and nuanced.. he cares about others.. he genuinely wants to better himself.. but he is also weighed down by who he is.. someone who is ultimatlely mischievous and likes to play with the order of things... but he's often on the right side of morality and wants to bring down the fuckers...
You see his relationship with kim develop and his care for her.
You see Mike's back story.. you see all of their back storys and see their nuances and the lack of anyone being purely good or evil... but shades of grey. The storyline is compelling.. its visually brilliant..
Bb on other hand is a fast paced joyride about a guy who rapidly turns into the total douchebag he probably always was but wasn't allowed to be because he was so "normal" and average. I quickly lost any sympathy for him as he treated everyone around him like trash... and for what.. his own ego buzz.
It was fast paced and fun in terms of cliff hangers and ooh how will they get out of this one...... but on a rewatch i actually found it pretty dull.. the conversations are limited.. walt and his entire family are annoying.. he treats jesse like shit...i ended up skipping to the only good bits.. saul and mike ..

I struggled (just a little) with BCS in the first couple of seasons, though that’s mostly because of the inevitable gear change between the final season of BB and the first season of BCS, to go from an intense action thriller finale to a quirky character drama was quite jarring. Unfortunately I think that tonal shift caused a lot of BB fans to tap out without settling into the rhythm of BCS.
Those early seasons are a slow-burn character drama, the plot, seemingly inconsequential, is essentially a framework to explore those characters whereas BB had an overarching high-concept plot from the very first episode. It takes a little time to adjust to that slower pace, but from season 3 onwards the chess board of BCS is finally set, the pieces begin to move, the stakes creep ever higher, the world grows richer and the slow-burn foundations of seasons 1 & 2 allow the later seasons to spread their wings and soar!
BCS is yet to end, so I can’t say it’s better than BB yet, BB is an excellent show, possibly the best I’ve ever seen and is definitely more entertaining than BCS. However, if this final season of BCS sticks the landing, I will probably consider it to be the most rewarding 6 seasons of television ever made.

The reason I say this is that Mike doesn’t mind killing people who deserve it, but he didn’t feel like Werner deserved to die, but did it because it was Gus’s decision. And after that, Mike almost “quit” Gus. i think the main point of bcs was to excentuate the consequences of walts actions, to open the viewers eyes to the fact that everybody that walt hurt, was a person. through and through, with their own stories. each with their own backstory and desires. just to end up dead or on the run because of walt.

I do prefer better call saul over breaking bad. Part of it is due to the fact that I was never attached to walter, jessy a little; but in better call saul I love a lot character jimmy, kim and nacho. Other part of it is because how the stories went. In breaking bad the highs are seasonal, the season end is a high but the next episode fails to retain any of that excitement, this is even more obvious when you binge the show. Better call saul does a better job at retaining some of the excitement and as such it feels less slow paced

I love both shows but Saul is undoubtedly slower paced. Hell, the first season of BCS is kind of a chore to sit through and I say that as a huge fan.

I personally prefer Better Call Saul. I like it more because I stopped watching it after 3rd season dubbing it as 'too slow'. I don't why I started watching it again, even if we're still two eps away from the finale I can easily announce I freaking love his show! Waiting to sit in silence to soak in what I'd have just seen after the final shot of the final episode airs👍

I think his motivation in bb is revenge. I think kim would die in the war between lalo and gus, which would make him use his wickedness to destroy the salamancas and gus by supporting Walt and Jesse
