    What is Phonological awareness?
Phonological awareness (PA) is the ability to hear, identify and manipulate units of sounds in spoken language. Phonological awareness activities include manipulating sounds with rhyming, alliteration, syllables, onsets, rimes, and phonemes. Phonological awareness focuses on sounds and not written letters and is the base for all other reading skills.
    For example:
    • Segmenting syllables
o What parts do you hear in PENCIL? PEN and CIL
    • Deleting rimes
    o Say pencil without P :- ENCIL
    • Isolating phonemes
o What’s the first sound you hear in PENCIL? /P/
    • rhyming
    o cat, bat
    • Alliteration
o Pretty penguin, rattling rat, cute cat
    • Words in sentence
o How many words in “ I look good”
    • Matching phonemes
o What’s another word that starts like lap? like (or any word that starts with /l/)
    What is Phonemic awareness?
Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate the individual sounds (phonemes) in words in spoken words. This includes blending sounds into words, segmenting words into sounds, and deleting and playing with the sounds in spoken words. phonemic awareness is simply noticing and/or manipulating the INDIVIDUAL sounds (also known as phonemes) in spoken language. Phonemic awareness tasks include identifying individual sounds, segmenting sounds, blending sounds, and manipulating individual sounds. Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate the smallest unit of sound in spoken language.
    • Blending Sounds - Put these sounds together /d/ /i/ /g/ :- dig
    • Segmenting Sounds - Separate these sounds dig :- /d/ /i/ /g/
    • Adding Sounds - Add /s/ to the end of pan
    • Deleting Sounds - Say pan without /p/
    • Substituting Sounds - The word is pan. Instead of /p/, let’s say /f/
HOW ARE PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS AND PHONEMIC AWARENESS DIFFERENT?
Phonological awareness is about being able to hear and manipulate units of sound in spoken words. That includes syllables, onset, rime, and phonemes, rhyming and words in sentence.
Phonemic awareness is about the being able to hear and manipulate the smallest unit of sound, a phoneme!
Phonemic awareness is a part of phonological awareness.
HOW ARE PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS AND PHONEMIC AWARENESS THE SAME?
Phonological awareness and phonemic awareness both focus on the sounds that we hear, and not the letters that we see.
If phonological awareness were a mom, phonemic awareness would be one of her children.
For example, counting the number of syllables in a word would be a phonological awareness activity and Counting the number of sounds in a word would be a phonemic awareness activity and phonological both . If We are working with phonemes means it is phonemic and phonological both.
